Transmission oil check

On a 2010 2.4 engine with a 6 speed trany now do you check for the proper transmission fluid level. Mine has a cap on top of the transmission but does not have a dipstick. When I remove the cap and the engine is cold there is no visible oil to be seen. What is the procedure to chect the proper oil level.

It's supposed to be filled for life with DEXRON-VI fluid. Without a shop manual, I wouldn't know where to start on these transaxles. If I suspected a leak with my 2010, I would let a tech take a look at it.

Re: Transmission oil check

I called the dealer and was told that I could not check the transmission oil level. I don't believe most things dealers say and this is one of them. There is got to be a way to check it if they can. Someone out there must know how to do it so please let us know.

Re: Transmission oil check

I have a service manual set from when I had a Saturn Ion. If it's anything like before, you would have to raise the vehicle on a level lift and remove a plug. Then, you would need to perform different procedures, depending on the temperature of the fluid.

BTW, the service manual set for the 2010 Malibu is not yet available from www.helminc.com or I would be combing through it right now. It's only $150 and cheap enough insurance when you need things done right.

Re: Transmission oil check

I checked in a Haynes for Malibu up to 2007. There is a Check Fill Plug on the side of the trans. Problem is you have to go underneath. The only way to check it is on a lift. It works like a Differential. You fill the Trans fluid until it just starts dripping out of the plug. 4T45E is supposed to hold (Haynes) 6.9 Qts.
