Re: Removing Shifter Knob

The entire shifter plate lifts out (the entire area around the chrome trim), the boot also unlatches from around the bottom of the shift knob allowing it to slide down and reveal the bolt holding the shifter knob in place. You really don't need to mess with the plate around the boot just slide the boot down, unscrew bolt, replace and slide boot back up until it snaps back in place.

Re: Removing Shifter Knob

When I've tried to lower the plastic trim ring between the boot and the knob I had to lift the bezel and use a small screwdriver to encourage the ring to release its grip. Once it fell it was a simple job to loosen the screw.

Hello,

I've been trying to find a way to remove my shifter knob (2008 Malibu) and came across this thread. I can easily lift out the entire shifter plate but am not sure how to unlatch the boot from the bottom of the shift knob. I'm worried about breaking something because it doesn't seem to want to "unlatch". Can you give me any guidance on this part of the job?

Thanks!!!

Re: Removing Shifter Knob

Come up from under it inside the shift boot with a small flat screwdriver. Once you unclip the chrome ring at the top of the boot it'll slide down and reveal the screw at the front of the knob.

"Does this thread apply to the 8Gen malibu also?"

Here is a video that clearly details how to remove the stuff carefully (wires. clips etc) Ours yanks up. The video is worthy of bookmarking since it takes you all the way up to the screen and harness and moldings etc. I bought a 5 dollar trim removal kit from autozone prior to taking stuff apart.

Re: Removing Shifter Knob

I just tried a trick that will work on the 7th gen malibus. You wont need to take the shifter cover off or anything. All you need is your index finger and thumb. Take your 2 fingers and use both hands, give the boot a tug down and you`ll access the set hex on your shifter. I did this and the only thing I had to do to my new shifter was remove the chrome trim piece under the old shifter, and slip it under the new one. If you don`t you`ll have a 1/2 inch gap between the boot and the shifter. You wont damage the boot lock clip trust me I tried it 5 times and nothing was damaged.

thanks
