Re: questions

I believe the fans only kick on once your thermostat reaches a certain temperature. The fan is not supposed to run all the time. Also, if I'm not mistaken, it should turn on when you turn your A/C on.

Cool Re: questions

MOreno,

I had a problem with my fan on my 83 J2000, and ended up soldering a switch in line.

Most of the time I ran it with the fan on and never had a problem.

After the engine had warmed up,

The fan was never able to lower the engine temp to much , and usually cooler is better.

Re: questions

The fan should only come on if the car is running too hot, the a/c is on or defroster is on.

The sensor you pulled is not called a t-stat sensor. Its an ECT. Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It probably just needs to be replaced if there is an actual problem.

From what it sounds like, you are assuming the fans should be on all the time. Which would be incorrect.

In a sense yes. There is a reason it only kicks on sometimes. The engine runs at its best when it's at operating temp. Otherwise it will just run rich.

Re: questions

One time I drove to Cape Cod and when I stepped out of my car I did notice there was an engine fan that ran for about 3-5 minutes after I had shut the car down.. does that mean it was running too hot? That temperature gauge thing was showing normal "just under the half-way point".

Normally when you're sitting a stop the fans will kick on since there isn't any air flow to cool the radiator off. I would assume the same thing when you shut the car off. It's normal.
