I have an 09 Malibu and lost one set of the key and key fob. I can get a Dorman key fob that comes with a tool to program the new keyfob through the OBDII port for about $65. Hopefully it won't make the original key fob (that wasn't lost unusable). I can get a new transponder key made at WM made for $35.
Has anyone had experience with this issue? What would a dealer want for a new key, keyfob and the programming?
I recently bought a keyfob on Amazon for under $20. You can have a dealer or certain locksmiths program them for $40-60.
Not sure how long it will last (this was my backup so it won't get used a ton) but it seems to be working just like the original so far.
To follow up, I bought a transponder key online for $12, It had GM logo and '+' sign on key showing it was correct. Local Hectors cut it for $3.
Programming transponder key was easy as I still had 1 original. Use original to turn ignition to 'ON' position for 5 seconds, then turn off and remove original key. Within 5 seconds put new key in and turn to 'ON' position and it was programmed.
Does your keyfob/car have remote start? I'm guessing no. From what I've read, the ones with remote start have to be programmed by the dealer or a locksmith. The ones without remote start you can do yourself.
No my vehicle does not have the remote start capability. Unfortunately I did not research that option. It seems there are several vendors on Amazon who have websites that may provide more details.
Good luck.
