Hello all - I just bought a 2003 Malibu LS. It came with one key and key fob. I'd like to get at least one extra key and key fob as backup.
My understanding is that the key is not chipped or anything along that line, so the key shouldn't be too difficult, presumably anyplace could make an extra key.
What's the best option for getting an extra keyfob and having it programmed? Does a dealer need to do that? Do they have to "re-match" all of the key fobs whenever you add one?
Updating my approach - since the key doesn't have a chip, I had two additional keys cut at Lowes, cost just over $2 per key.
I purchased two additional key fobs from Amazon, a two-pack for about $21.00 - they're "keyless option" remotes and they came from remotesremotes.com.
I made an appointment to have them programmed at a local GMC dealer - the charge will be $39.95 and supposedly the number of remotes I'm having programmed doesn't change the price.
So "all in" per remote I'll have $2 in the key, about $11 in the remote and $20 in the programming so between $35 - $40 each. If I were doing only one key that would be about $55.
I saw that at places like Autozone the remote itself sells for $35 to $40 without a key or programming.
Sounds like a very good deal. Are your sure the keys are not chipped? If they are, you can probably program them yourself. Dealer should take care of it all.
You have posted good info.
Keys are not chipped. Fobs can be programed yourself as secondaries as long as the one you have is the main fob. It should be stamped "1" on the back. If it's stamped "2", then you have a secondary and you'll have to take it to a dealer.
The Fob I have is the #1 but I haven't found anything online anywhere that distinguishes between being able to program yourself if you have the #1 key - at least on a 2003. I have an appointment to have the additional fobs programmed today.
