Brake Line Repair...

My girlfriends mother has a 1998 Malibu, the brake lines that run to the rear wheels are leaking right between the front and rear doors. So I am trying to do this for her for free.

I have never replaced Brake lines personally so I have a few questions..

1) How long does a job like this take?

2) I was told it is much easier to use pre bent lines, is this true? If not, how hard is it to bend the lines myself and is there a special tool for it?

Re: Brake Line Repair...

1) Will depend on how far up you can get the car. If on jack stands and/or ramps, it'll take a while - I'd plan on a full day of it.

2) Easier to use pre-bent lines, yes. How hard to bend it yourself? Depends on what make line you use, and yes, you DO need to use a tubing bender for this.

Not a Malibu, but here's a thread where one guy did his Thunderbird complete, including discussion on why he picked some of the brands he picked (you don't have to pick his brands, just that he covers why X and not Y or Z ... )

335K miles on original motor and tranny (only motor work 2 x LIM replacement), Monroe SensaTrac struts front and back (new at approx. 300K miles), and Alero discs in back. LS fogs added with custom wiring. HID high beams, HIR low and halogen fogs. Raybestos Pro Grade front rotors and Bendix D747 ceramic pads on front.

Addendum: Rest in peace. Surge tank blew, motor overheated, I think she's lived a long and useful life.
