Maybe neither.

A little sign of rust on parts exposed to the weather doesn't necessarily indicate that there is a problem. You should ask your mechanic WHY he thinks this is a problem. Struts are expensive.......and should be replaced in pairs. Mounts are sometimes welded to the frame.

Just taking it loose from the mount to clean and lube, if nothing is really worn out, is a fair undertaking.

Re: malibu 2000 front struts

I bought complete strut assemblys from amazon for my 98 for less that $80 each. I'm gonna guess your top strut bearing is shot or needs lubrication. The spring would need to be removed to lubricate properly. Not a job for the weak of heart.

sounds like every car I've ever had but I'm ghetto and never replace them. Sounds like I got a bunch of beer bottles in my trunks.

I bought 2 struts for $55 from local scrap yard, hope they're ok.I wanted to take the struts apart but read its a little tricky to compress springs .I personally don't see why

Not so much tricky as risky without the proper tools. Which most folks don't actually have.

There's a way to do it - but truthfully, if you could do that, and bought two strut assemblies for $55, for just a few dollars more, you could have had two brand new upper mounts - they're available in Monroe for about $35 each ($70 for two) at RockAuto. There's some cheaper ones, too - I just have a minimum quality brand level I go with. (Good argument for Monroes are that the ones on the car have about 200Kmiles on them too ... and don't creak, rattle, or otherwise seem to be bad. I'm just replacing them when I replace the worn out struts.)

(Link to their catalog list at http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...&parttype=7600 )

RwP

335K miles on original motor and tranny (only motor work 2 x LIM replacement), Monroe SensaTrac struts front and back (new at approx. 300K miles), and Alero discs in back. LS fogs added with custom wiring. HID high beams, HIR low and halogen fogs. Raybestos Pro Grade front rotors and Bendix D747 ceramic pads on front.

Addendum: Rest in peace. Surge tank blew, motor overheated, I think she's lived a long and useful life.
