Radio Replacement Help

Hey guys. Looking for a little advice. I was attempting to replace the head unit in my father-in-law's car, and wasn't getting power for a bit. Now, the only way to get power is tying the red wire (ignition) and yellow wire (battery) together. However, when the engine is shut off, it loses all presets. I'm assuming it's a head unit issue right now, but could it be an issue with the constant flow from the battery? No known blown fuses, as I've already check them all with a 12v tester. Let me know where you think I should look. Thanks.

What year is the car and the trim level to have an idea of what the car is equipped with.

09' Malibu LTZ with brick leather interior
4 cyl w/6 speed auto
Silver Ice Metallic paint

Mods: PTM bow ties, grill, washer nozzles, and fog light trim
-20% tint
-MTX600XD, 2 12" Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1, 4 gauge stinger wire, Pioneer 7800MP CD player
-5000K HID headlights and 3000K fog lights
-White LED's in the switches and handles
-Blacklight overhead console LED's
-Painted and polished factory aluminum wheels

Are you replacing an OEM head unit with another OEM head unit?

Wasn't getting power to the radio? You need to be more specific.

The yellow is a speaker wire. The red is power. The dark green wire is your acc power.

Sorry guys. Dumb of me to leave the basic info out of it. I believe it is a 2000 Malibu LS trim(?). It's a rather basic set up. Going from after market unit to after maket unit. I replaces the oem with an after market a few years ago and the head unit recently stopped working, and that is why I am replacing again. When I mention colors, it's from the unit to the wiring harness that converts the oem wires to the after market. the big problem that I am having is the lack of continuous power to the unit from the battery to maintain power and memory. Hope this helps, and ask me if more info is needed. Sorry for being such a noob. Thanks.

It would be unlikely that something is wrong with the radio itself and the wires running through the car, as its probably the least complicated wiring in the whole car, ie, no computers, just power and wire, the rest is controlled through the unit itself. It is more likely how everything is hooked up.

Check your wiring and any connections you made. If you used electrical tape and twisted them together, thats probably the problem, the problem being a lack of experience and proper tools. If thats it, just keep trying, get some crimp connectors or solder and try again.

Good luck with it all, just dont give up!

Also, some systems require a Anti-theft bypass, but if you already had an aftermarket, thats most likely not the case either.

mine (05 classic) using a harness that will plug into the factory end, came with a red wire not attached to any pin in the plug. that red wire will connect directly to the harness that leads INTO your aftermarket radio. the other end will need to be connected to an accessory wire found on your ignition harness (i used the brown wire in the pic below (2nd ACC.))
