Anyone notice their Malibus will not go over 4k rpm while in P or N?

I've noticed it before, but never enough to think about it until today when a friend of mine and I were revving our engines (him a 300 and I Malibu) at a bunch of tuner Civics and Eclipses across the parking lot, and found the 4k limit very restrictive.

I am not an old man with a knee that gets locked up; I am a testosterone-filled teenager that demands a roar (even if it is a 4cyl-whistle).

Its the Rev Limiter. To prevent you from throwing a rod. GM has been doing it for years.

Yes, because seriously, higher than 4k while sitting still? Not good, just not good. Well, not exactly harmful--the engine can rev further, for sure--but if you leave that option available, always a few people will "try it out" and sit at redline in park one too many times. And then you'll have a warranty request to replace an engine for "I was just revving it...it shouldn't have done this".

A lot of what you were hearing, also, in others wasn't necessarily them revving higher but likely having much more open intakes and exhausts as well--vs. the very quiet tuned Malibu.

I had a 1993 Ford Escort GT. 1.8 DOHC. I could run that engine in P at up to 7k. If course I had a Header, Exhaust, Intake. And belive it or not, Ran Smooth. Actually smoother than when I bought the car new.
