the best thing to do is check with a dealer parts department or a specialty car audio store. They will be able to suggest some good looks that fit with the design. I would keep in mind the ambient lighting in the car is green so if your looking for a deck rtry and get one where the lighting matches up

What's the price tag on that unit including install? Does it integrate thoroughly with all the Malibu steering wheel controls?

I picked up the unit for $800. after the wiring harness, ipod controls, steering controls and installation it ran for about $1200. So it def was cheap but worth it because I really depend on that navi when I travel. The iPod controls rock, everything is integrated right on the system and yes the steering controls work great! The only thing it disables is the beeping sound from the seat belt indicater and the left/right turn signal sound. I would need the onstar adapter for that to work but I just don't see a need for it.

Deejay, did you keep the original speakers and replace only the head unit?

No, I kept the original speakers. I bought the LTZ so it has the premium bose sound speakers

I could not find who made the premium sound system for the LTZ. My 08 Equinox has premium sound, and it has Pioneer badges on the door speakers. I could not find any markings on the LTZ speaker.
Did you find Bose markings when you tore into yours ?

Quick question regarding the IPOD - anyone know where I can find the audio jack to plug into the malibu from the ipod? Radio Shack, apple store???

I do not own a Ipod, but I would think the two stores you mentioned would have it. Wal-Mart carries a few Ipod items and if you can wait a couple days order online from Amazon.

Actually when I was researching what car to buy I read several articles that talked about the Bose speakers and my salesman mentioned it.

Lee is right about both having them. I wouldn't suggest purchasing it from Apple though only because they have a higher markup for such a small cable. i purchased mine from radioshack, just let them know your looking for a male to male audio jack.

E-Bay is another alternative. There's a cable listed here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2008-Chevy-Malibu-Ipod-MP3-Aux-Input-Cable_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43947QQihZ015QQit emZ250228991855QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW).
You can "Buy It Now" for less that $6.50.

As a follow up, has anyone thought of trying the GM PAL (personal audio link) with their iPod??? It allows you to control almost any function of the iPod from the factory radio, and the radio in most Malibus (US8,US9 radios) accepts the mod. Here's a link: http://www.gm.com/shop/parts/ipod/PAL+Quick+Ref+Guide+NOV07.pdf

http://www.gm.com/shop/parts/ipod/

Eventhough it only states certain vehicles, those vehicles' radio head units are pretty much standard throughout GM.

I was told by a friend at a dealer that they were making modifications for the Malibu head unit, and that the Malibu-specific PAL would be released by May 1. I kind of think that he had no clue about the similarity of the head units in the vehicles GM is currently installing the PAL into and the Malibu's.

After I get my PAL, I will let you know how it woks out. Just about everything I have read on fora of vehicles that use it has been positive.

The list price is $159.00, but I'll get a dealer discount. I've seen it as low as $131.00 on GM parts sites. I know it sounds expensive, but being able to control my iPod from my head unit/radio, along with having the titles and other info displayed on my factory radio, while leaving my iPod stowed in the glove box/ console would be cool, and I don't have to fool around with the iPod while driving seems safe.

I'm anxious to see/read how it works, let us know!!! Using my ipod today difficult while driving - the ability to control from steering wheel or radio column would be great!

Ebay of course! :) Turns out the guy that sold it to me was selling them out of a Mickey Shorr. So I just went and picked it up and saved the shipping costs

Is this similar to Ford's SYNC system?

Looking to buy a 2008 Malibu LTZ. I really want a car with navigation. I found an '08 factory navigation that matches the aluminum trim. Anybody know if the standard Chevrolet navigation will fit in the radio's spot? And if the voice control will work? Please let me know if any of you have done this! Thanks!

Joshcs1,

I just want to make sure that I am understanding your post… You are looking at a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ and it doesn’t have the navigation system that was installed during the building process at the plant. However, you have found a factory head unit that has the navigation in it and you are wondering that if you were to purchase this 2008 Malibu and put this head unit in it will all the options and features work; is this correct?

This is what I am looking into. I don't want to buy a Malibu unless I can install a factory unit that will at least fit and work properly.... I love the Malibu, but I love the factory navigation just a little more...

When you say a factory nav unit, do you mean what the Malibu comes with, OnStar with dot matrix directions in the radio display? Or are you looking for a Garmin-type map navigation?

Joshcs1,

Thank you for clarifying what you are looking to do. There are a lot of members on this forum that are very knowledgable about things like this, however, I highly recommend contacting either the GM techs or parts department to see about the head unit for the Equinox being compatible with the Chevrolet Malibu.

I really doubt it will work 100%. The Malibu uses 11 bit GMLAN where the 2007-2009 Equinox uses the 29 bit GMLAN. The radio will be unable to communicate with the car.
