: Things you learned from reading the manual that you might not know otherwise....
Pizza Man 04-03-2008, 06:53 AM I know this will sound weird.
We have two months of ownership, but last night was the first time our Malibu was out in the dark. I noticed two things. First, I noticed the interior door pulls are illuminated. I thought that was pretty cool. Second, on the interior roof there is the Home Link Panel. Did you know there are two LEDs (I think??) that shine downward to light up the console? I didn't!
Have any of you guys noticed anything cool or unusual about our Bu's?
I really like those blue dots for the door handle and garage opener.
It was awhile before I remembered the center armrest would move forward and back.

I wonder if my wife knows that? I didn't. :o

08MalibuLeaser 04-03-2008, 03:36 PM Center armrest - how do you move it forward and back again - time to look at the manual again...
I really like the blue illumination - gives the car some cool interior styling - I'm still having fun playing with the heated seats - never had that in my ride before...
The sunshade in my Bu' is also a nice touch for those ultra sunny days!!
I've had my Malibu since December 31st...I didn't know about the armrest. How do you move it?
Grab the front, and pull forward or push back. There is no catch to release.
It has a lot of friction so it will not slide by mistake.

Verizon and OnStar have partnered and offered a plan that allows one to share minutes between your Verizon phone and your OnStar phone.
Last week my wife's 74 year old Aunt was explaining to me that her cell phone minutes were combined with the Onstar on her Pontiac. She had Verizon. I have US Cellular, so I doubt this feature is available to me.

Malibooboo 04-04-2008, 10:07 AM It figures. My family is on a plan through Verizon, but I have a company Blackberry through AT&T.
On the LTZ, the heated outside mirrors turn on when you use the rear defrost.
I don't think I would have figured that out without reading the manual.

Same with my Ridgeline.
jasbre 04-11-2008, 10:05 AM For the scroll controls on the right side of the steering wheel, I knew if you tapped them the radio would scroll between your preset stations. I didn't know that if you press and hold the buttons for a second or two, they act as a "seek" button.

08MalibuLeaser 04-11-2008, 01:40 PM Xm radio glitch - anyone know about a firmware or update for the XM radio - only shows partial song titles, etc..
The arm rest thing moving blew my mind. I tried it out after i read it here.
Xm radio glitch - anyone know about a firmware or update for the XM radio - only shows partial song titles, etc..
That's workin my nerves too, especially when I hear a good song on XM and i can't see the full name so I can get it later. It's not just an XM thing...I think it's the radio it self. I have some MP3's I play that don't get the full name shown also.
plgtx 04-16-2008, 06:34 AM Mine pretty much shows the full song. If it doesn't, I just hit the info button and it will show it.
USA1fan 04-17-2008, 09:37 AM Related to the overhead LEDs, but not a positive- the home remote buttons aren't illuminated. Probably because they aren't HomeLink. All my other GM vehicles with HomeLink have had the white dot on each button lit (07 Av, 07 Trailblazer, 04 Malibu). It's only a minor annoyance, but I notice it every time I come home after dark and can't see the buttons well..
Something I noticed...
I was looking at the little light that shows that the passenger side airbag is off and and wondered if maybe it was always off and if I had to manually turn it on. But at that time i was driving my mother someplace and noticed that as soon as she sat in the seat it recognized someone was in it and the light switched over to ON and a seat bels light came on. So the seat knows when a person is in it. I thought that was cool.
08MalibuLeaser 04-18-2008, 02:33 PM I wonder what the required weight or height used in the sensor of that feature is
Malibooboo 04-18-2008, 08:17 PM I thought the force of deployment of air bags was dependent on passenger weight obtained by the seat.
plgtx 04-21-2008, 06:39 AM Isn't the standard between 40-60 lbs? I could be wrong.
MiracleMalibu 04-30-2008, 09:16 AM The night that i drove my Malibu home (1.5 hours over a mountain in the fog) the only complaint that I had was the armrest was too far back for me to use but after i read the owners manual i found out that it moved forward. Now I have no complaints at all!
Pizza Man 04-30-2008, 09:58 AM Now, I have no complaints at all!
Wonderfull place to be, ain't it! ;)
cldouglass 04-30-2008, 09:17 PM So there I was the other day vacuuming out the LTZ, I was using my detailers brush in combination with the vacuum on the drivers door when I heard the vacuum get all choked up like it just swallowed something. I shut it off and there stuck in the hose was a small strip of rubber about 1 inch wide by about four inches long. It was a piece of my drivers door! If you look on the drivers door, right where the push/pull grip is, you will find its location. Just be on the lookout if you are using your vacuum in that area, the pieces are not glued in they have very small tabs that sort of hold them in place.
08MalibuLeaser 05-01-2008, 05:50 AM How much loose change did you find in there?

I saw this piece laying on the floor on a Malibu we test drove. I put it back in place and was thinking this is not a good sign.
So far nothing has fallen off mine :D
USA1fan 05-01-2008, 08:25 AM That's like the cupholder and storage pocket inserts that were in our 2004 Malibu. I think it's meant to provide a better feel for where your fingertips touch when opening or closing the doors. I'm a bit surprised that the actual storage pockets and cupholders don't have these anymore though. The full liners in the Trailblazers are great for easy cleanup- pull them out, wash them in hot soapy water, dry, reinstall. No mess or sticky stuff left in the car.
MiracleMalibu 05-01-2008, 02:19 PM I use car coasters in the cup holders and it sucks up all the moisture from bottles or cans when they sweat.

08MalibuLeaser 05-01-2008, 07:06 PM Car Coasters, cool! I always hate when a drink drips liquid into the cup holder or the moisture drips in as well. Although these cupholders come completely out of the console and can be easily cleaned.

Malibooboo 05-02-2008, 08:26 AM My kids are always spilling soda or juice boxes in the backseat cup holders of my Avalanche. And they don't lift out so they are a pain to clean.
This probably applies to the Malibu also, I'll have to check my wife's car to be sure.
My 08 Equinox thermometer after being parked for 1 hour did not update when I started to drive again. I asked the service manager about this and he explained how it works. The vehicle needs to be parked for 3 hours or more, or you need to drive over 50 MPH before the thermometer will start to update. After watching it the last couple days I found he was correct :)
So when you pull out of the garage in the morning, it will update right away, but if you stop somewhere for a hour or two it will not update until you hit 50 MPH.
vnamvet 05-09-2008, 06:09 PM When I first start my car, it ALWAYS idles at 1500 RPM, no matter what the outside temperature is (and I live in Florida!) It takes a couple of minutes to get down to 600 RPM.................wonder why??
USA1fan 05-12-2008, 07:31 AM Engine warmup period. You used to use a choke. Now the computer takes care of it for you. Doesn't matter where you live- if you can stand the temperature outside and the car hasn't been running in more than a few hours, it won't be at the ideal operating temperature when you first crank it up. You'd notice a difference in how long it takes to start running at lower rpm's if you come up north in the winter (say, <20 degrees F) then go back down there. ;)
NotmyCar 05-13-2008, 06:35 PM My Chrome rims are HUBCAPS!!!! WTF?
Pizza Man 05-13-2008, 07:15 PM My Chrome rims are HUBCAPS!!!! WTF?
One of my neighbors has them on her Malibu. Hubcaps yes, but fine looking hubcaps they are. I would prefer them on my LTZ instead of the dull finished wheels I have.
Best looking hubcabs I have ever seen. The first set I saw I had to touch them to see if they were wheels or hubcaps. I think they look better than some of the other Malibu alloy wheels.
USA1fan 05-14-2008, 04:58 AM I'd be lying if I said I like hubcaps (of any kind) better than the factory wheels on my own LTZ. But the hubcaps on the new cars are good enough to fool just about anyone, including me, unless you inspect them really close. I noticed that the Pontiac G6 has hubcaps available that are also as convincing. For once you can get a car without alloys and not feel the need to replace them just to get a good look. :)
I drive the LS and they're hubcaps... I didn't realize it till we inspected them. What makes them look so real is that the steel rim under it is shaped like a 5 spoke rim also. The exact shape u see on the hubcap is the exact shape of the steel rim. My dad comments that they look so good you may even be able to have the steel rims chrome dipped and no one would ever know.
Malibooboo 05-14-2008, 06:10 AM But will the hubcaps loosen and fall off after a couple years? And if they do, will Chevy charge an arm and a leg to replace them?
But will the hubcaps loosen and fall off after a couple years? And if they do, will Chevy charge an arm and a leg to replace them?
I believe the caps bolt on.
Yeah...when u look at the hub caps and see what looks like black lug bolts....those actually screw onto the actual lugs under them. It's an old design they've used for years. I used to be a mechanic and used to see late model 90's cavs use them. Unless you forget to screw them back on those jammies aint going no place.

Yup, just like the truck stock alloys that have the center metal covered plastic hub/nut cover....
jr_78 05-14-2008, 04:32 PM did you know that you have to use the ignition key to set the child lock safety feature on the rear doors!!!!
p.s. Can someone explain the "sunshade"??? I have an LS.
BuckyFan 05-14-2008, 06:57 PM If you have the rear power center, there is a manual rear sunshade as well. You pull it up from back by the rear glass.
08MalibuLeaser 05-15-2008, 05:33 AM I have the sunshade - have yet to use it, maybe on a hot sunny day I will put it up to block some sun and keep the car a bit cooler in the back
USA1fan 05-15-2008, 05:37 AM I park in the sun every day at work, so the interiors of whatever I drive get hot by the time I leave. I've learned to keep the sunshade in and to put up a store bought shade in front, and the temperatures seem to be a good 20 degrees cooler when I get in on the same kind of hot sunny days.
08MalibuLeaser 05-15-2008, 05:44 AM What store do you get one of those front sunshade things?
kacuziken 05-15-2008, 08:10 AM If you have the rear power center, there is a manual rear sunshade as well. You pull it up from back by the rear glass.
Do all the cars have the sunshade or only the ones with the rear power center?
Pizza Man 05-15-2008, 08:12 AM Do all the cars have the sunshade or only the ones with the rear power center?
It's included in the Rear Power Package. No RPP, no Sunshade. :(
kacuziken 05-15-2008, 08:21 AM I wonder if its something that i can purchase and add myself? I like to mix and match stuff from different models to fit my needs... i have the 1LT but i like the LTZ rear lights.. i have a family member that works for chevy dealership in parts so we will have to see...
USA1fan 05-15-2008, 10:51 AM What store do you get one of those front sunshade things?
The sunshades I'm talking about around the pull down things like the back window has, or like the things you can buy for the side glass for kids. They're the (usually) foil or silver colored backed cloth with a springy metal rod sewn in around the edge, usually forming a rounded off square, and come in pairs, sized for different vehicles. Twist the things up and they fold down to about a foot in diameter, for easy storage under the seats. Untwist them and they fill half the windshield, which is why there are two- the second just overlaps the first on the other half. I'm using the ones I bought for the Avalanche in the bu, and found them to be just a bit on the short side (use the sunvisors to hold them in place and cover much of the area they won't). I bought mine at the local Super Wal-Mart in the automotive section.
There are also models that are basically cardboard sized just for your windshield, and that fold down accordion style. I find those take up far more space than the ones I've got, though they usually fill the windshield a little better. Those are also usually sold in Wal-Mart.
Here's a link to an Amazon.com page with a bunch of different styles. Mine are like the number 6 (dolphins) model, but with a brown wolf motif instead.

08MalibuLeaser 05-15-2008, 12:38 PM Thanks for the info USAfan - the hot sun makes the Ebony interior very warm after work...you guys don't think it's "gay" to have that sun protector thing right?

All the girls at work have them! :D
MiracleMalibu 05-15-2008, 12:45 PM I have used sun shades for years. The fold up type that looks like bubble wrap and are bright crome works the best but take up too much room. I have the cloth type that fold and fits under the seat.
Pizza Man 05-15-2008, 12:48 PM Seriously Eric, you can never have too much UV protection. That's why I convinced my wife to keep the rear sun shade up all the time.

This is truly a bummer. Every time I wash the car I'm reminded of it. No doubt it shakes for all to see while going down the highway. Sub-par.:(
USA1fan 06-03-2008, 05:03 AM I've seen several going down the interstates at 70+ mph and nothing was shaking, so I doubt that's an issue. The area you're talking about is actually part of the rear bumper cover, right? I haven't checked mine out yet, but the 2004 was the same way. Most recent model vehicles are built similarly- the covers themselves are fairly flexible, and fasten to the plastic wheelwell liners, the fenders (above the covers), and of course, the bumpers, but that's about it. There's no real reinforcements behind them, especially on the sides, so they flex fairly easily. It's got a lot to do with weight savings, but despite what you'd think from the way they feel when you're washing the cars, they don't seem to be noticable on the road.
The only vehicles that seem to be an exception to this are the 07+ full sized Tahoes and Suburbans (and the other GM variants of them like the Escalades). Around the hitch cutouts in the rear (especially below) there's even less material, and thanks to the cutout the plastic flexes even more. There've been many reports of this area fluttering by owners.
salgeek 06-03-2008, 09:47 AM IMO, a byproduct of weight savings should not be a loose, flimsy, easily pushed in - side bumper panel. After having looked at how the piece is affixed to the wheel well and bumper I'm of the opinion it quite simply is poorly designed.

Technology!

Unfortunately I noticed that from day one. It is my least favorite "feature". Why can't GM supply a dedicated spot for the gear indicator?
DOACanada 07-01-2008, 09:56 AM Good be so that you have to concentrate on driving and not looking at the Info....Just a thought but you do drive differently in manual mode than in automatic mode.
I just recently noticed that the Sun Visors extend. I know that in the 06's the sun visor just had a plastic piece that extended.
kc650 07-07-2008, 12:09 PM One negative thing I noticed is that the trip odometers cannot be reset to indicate distance traveled since the last ignition cycle. On my '03 Trailblazer and my '04 Venture pressing and holding the reset button with the trip odometer displayed will show the accumulated mileage since the last time the vehicle was started. Pressing reset without holding just resets it to zero. The Malibu resets to zero no matter how long you hold down the button.
This was a handy feature--if I wanted to track my mileage but forgot to reset the odometer, I was able to do it anytime during the trip (provided I hadn't turned off the motor). It's not a huge deal, but it's a feature I'm already missing.

Yeah. My '07 has the plastic pieces too.
They're so cheap feeling...
I'm scared to use them. I keep thinking they'll crack and fall off.
codan 07-12-2008, 08:06 AM I check on hub caps on my vehicle, Pepboys, Autozone, Walmart, Kmart, they didn't have much for 16'' tires, Went to local hub cap place, $60 for 4 of them with $20 off for the hub caps on the car. The chrome really sets of the car but found out after market hub caps are not the same, Have to get them for front wheel drive of set the rims stick out a little bit, flat hub caps won't fit, I'll put the picture of my car on within next 2 days
I hope everyone already knows about the remote start. I didn't see it mentioned and some people may not know. Very handy in hot or cold climates! Not sure which models or feature sets this is standard with. I know GM has offered this for years in many of it's vehicles but it's worth mentioning.

We're friends with the saleslady we've now bought 3 vehicles from and though even she asks me questions about features when I visit, she took the time to show my mother the remote start, how the armrest slides, the radio buttons, etc. I think it's time for more to do that, hah, even just based on this thread;)

My Colorado (traded for the Bu) had the goofiest outside temperature algorithm of any vehicle I've ever driven. Even after sitting at work all day it would take 20+ mintues for it to get up to the correct temperature somedays. Someone put WAY too much thought into an external temperature display! I hated it. Sometimes it wouldn't even be right before I could get home from work.

Nope, but I've noticed how quickly the 4-banger can get warm enough to run the heater.. even when it's 30-40F outside... Let's see how it does in the dead of winter and it's 10F outside.

For outside temp or inside temp?
One you shut the car off, you have to drive past 50mph or the temperature won't update for external temp.
Malo83 07-22-2008, 02:18 PM Sorry, but I was refering to the Water Temp, mine stays just below the 1/2 way mark ;)
Pizza Man 08-11-2008, 12:06 PM Has anyone noticed inside the fuel door there is a metal tab that you can use to hang the gas cap? Keeps the cap from contacting the car body.

I know this isn't a fancy feature or a new one but my old car didn't have that, I was happy as hell to see that when I opened my gas cap

Yeah, in fact that's been on every GM vehicle I've ever owned.

I never noticed that before, and I feel like a dummy. I've driven almost 10,000 miles, and I usually see small details like that. I've always hung the gas cap over the top of the open gas door, and have been slightly unhappy that the cap touches the car body. No longer, though!
FenwickHockey65 08-11-2008, 09:17 PM Really, this is my first GM with a tethered gas cap.
Really? My '98 Sonoma has one. I believe the Saturn's gas cap didn't even have a tether, and the Safari's too far back for me to remember, but I don't remember seeing my dad putting the cap on the bumper or anything, so I can only assume that there was a hook.
Pizza Man 08-12-2008, 04:59 AM <<< . . a metal tab that you can use to hang the gas cap? >>>
I'll post a photo tonight, Jay.
USA1fan 08-12-2008, 05:01 AM I've seen some GM vehicles with no tab or anything. Then there have been a couple with a cool little thing on the back to actually put the cap itself on, using the threaded end of the cap. My favorite is the hook for the tether though, because both of the others involve touching either the threads to paint or letting it dangle on / near painted fender panels.

Yes, that's the variable intermittent...a lot of cars have that anymore, I think.
Regardless, a nice touch.
USA1fan 10-24-2008, 08:42 AM It's pretty nice, but the Rainsense wipers from the Av spoiled me. So I miss it a bit, and find myself adjusting the wiper settings far more often than I used to. :(

I'm one of the few who hates those...auto wipers would drive me crazy, and I'd have to always defeat them off.
But then again, I have a thing against ever using the wipers, and instead keep all my glass polished and sealed (like the paint) so water just beads and rolls off. As such, I'll occasionally hit mist downward for a quick gunk off swipe while driving in the rain, but then never turn them on.
Probably why I never need wiper blades and always have a crystal clear windshield;)
Truitt 10-24-2008, 09:28 AM Not to be the out-of-control pissed-off teenage driver, but they also speed up past 60.
At 50mph and faster I've noticed that the highest setting for the first click is the same as the second click (no change...try it one day). Also, when once you hit 60, 70, 80, and 90 they all speed up. I read that part about 90 in a book ;)
Also, I did not know this (because instinctively I just switch my lights on when starting the car; I do not use the AUTO function) but when you have your windshield wipers going for thirty seconds it automatically turns on your headlights and tailights as if it was night. I think that's kind of nifty, especially if you're in a state that requires your lights be on when it is raining (Such as Florida and Virginia).

ThugAssDA 10-30-2008, 08:47 PM Hey All,
I love my new Malibu, there are tons of great standard and available features that just make the car stand out so much.
However, what are some of the smaller things that maybe not everyone knows about that you absolutely love?
For me, two things stand out huge for me. The first is the center console, how it is able to move forward giving my elbow more room to rest on, I just love that feature! Also, I love the little blue LED lights that are put in places around the inside of the car. It really makes it look cool at night.
The good thing about this topic is that some things might pop up that some of us have not realized yet!!
TMoneyR523 10-30-2008, 09:10 PM I LOVE the blue lighting! I like the LED brake lights and chrome handles too..... and fog lamps LOL.......
And automatic climate control...
And OnStar....
I just love the Malibu in general LOL
beach 10-30-2008, 09:28 PM Thinking quickly...
-Bluetooth...rocks...enough said
-UltraLux suede & 2-tone coloring around interior
-LED lighting
-Rear sunshade & plug...so useful, especially the shade which I use daily, and both being awesome showoff pieces people don't expect
-Sliding center armrest that looks richly trimmed and feels even better
-Trunk finishing and the pull strap...the latter is small, but so useful
-Remote start & heated seats...now common, but does it get any better on a cold morning?
-Onstar...I wanted to use my downloaded Mapquest directions today, only for the system to not be available. Got lost. No worries, as a very friendly Onstar adviser got me going in the right direction and stayed on the line to lead me. It's like having a virtual helper, always there.
Just a well thought out car that's styled and built for "wow" at the same time.

Open the console lid. The little partition wall that makes a front to the inside behind the cupholders slides up and out, and then you can detach the cupholder bin that's held in by little tabs.
At first I couldn't figure out how to get the cupholders loose, until I realized the little wall just lifts out...that'd freed it up.

ESCAPEMAX 11-02-2008, 09:36 PM Yesterday I removed the panel under the drivers side dash. Was running a 4 gauge wire to the trunk for a later project. Mine is an 08 1LT 2.4 Ecotec. Got to see what the Electric Assist steering is. A big motor attached to the steering shaft. The other thing I noticed is that there is no Throttle Cable. Its an electrical plug on the pedal.
The 4 gauge wire I pushed through the wire grommet going to the Steering Assist Motor. When I ran it along the sill plates, They're held in by metal clips. Not screws. Not the plastic "Christmas Trees" of the past. And boy do they fit tight. When I got into the trunk, I saw the piece of Styro Foam used to fill the void behind the seat.
I dont mess with this car as much as I had with previous cars. So its a surprise what I find. Cant wait for a Haynes to come out.

nighthawk-24 11-19-2008, 01:38 AM Apparently this is a perfect name for this thread. I have posted on this thread before, but what, another new discovery. I have not seen anyone talk about this yet and I have not had a chance to look it up in the manuel so I hope my Bu is not possessed.
Tonight I was driving to work and my Bu tried to protect me...even though it was totaly wrong. I was going about 70 mph on a two lane highway. It was dark out and my temp display said it was 36 degrees outside. As I crested the top of a hill my information center stated "ICE POSSIBLE". There was in fact no ice around as it was 36 outside and completely dry. I wonder if the computer takes into account several variables such as speed, temp, and humidity, or if my car is just going crazy. Obviously it should not remind me about ice unless its under 32 degrees. Maybe my CPU needs a ride on the short bus. Anyways...I just thought that this was kind of cool if not kind of wrong. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.
By the way...my Bu never told me "DAMN HOT OUT" when it was 98 degress in the shade and 100% humidity this summer.

It's intentional. Some GM vehicles show that message at 37F. Temperatures at the road surface are often colder than just a bit higher up, so that even with a 36F reading at the sensor, there could be ice on the roadway (especially bridges and overpasses). I've actually seen this situation, back when I lived in the Chicago suburbs.

Hence, the reason for the "Bridge Freezes Before Road Surface" warning signs. ;) I too have encountered this situation while driving our company's Chevy Van about 20 years ago.

Know what's funny about this? It's one feature on a few GM vehicles now (rather than the cheap old slide out plastic panels & other extensions) that almost NO one realizes is there, until accidentally pulling in a different direction one day.
I knew about it from reading but my mother, for instance, it took her nearly 8 months and then one day she came home saying "did you know my sunvisors slide sideways? I didn't and then I saw the little arrow..." I've read the exact same comments from many on the Buick Enclave board time and time again, too. One of those little things you don't know unless you know, especially with little notation other than the tiny arrow on the post.
Also, in the morning the temperature is rising but the road surface may still be frozen if no salt has been put down yet.

I'll start...
... on the fuel guage, there is a little arrow below the gas pump symbol that tells you what side the gas cap is on.
TMoneyR523 04-04-2009, 10:58 PM ... your vehicle is equipped with an Antilock Braking System (ABS).

Perhaps a feature of the premium audio in the LTZ? I suppose I could've done it wrong. I turned my car on, turned the radio off and then with just the clock showing held the soft key, which would be the rightmost preset button, for about 20 seconds and nothing happened.
I tried on my 2009 2LT and it didnt work.
Worked on mine. I turned the radio off and held the last preset button. It switches between Normal and Loud. Now if I could increase the volume of the turn signal click, the radio at any kind of reasonable volume makes it inaudible.
plgtx 04-07-2009, 08:58 AM I tried it on mine and it worked. It works when either the car is on or off. With the car off, if you hold the last preset button for about 8-15 seconds, you just hear the chime. It will either be loud or normal. If you start the car, have the radio off, and do the same thing, you will see either Normal or Loud on the display. I have the premium system if that helps.

I don't know if this will help.. but for it to work for me.. I had to turn off the car, OPEN THE DOOR (to disable the radio), and then it worked for me.. worth a try... :-/

Oh will have to try this method, always did it with the door closed and vehicle moving. Like Slhaas I too am getting miffed with this.
Bluetooth update? There are a lot of people having issues with lossing the connection to their phone or it no longer connecting at all. There is a software update, done at a dealership, to correct it.
Thank You.
Delphi_Man 04-08-2009, 04:55 PM I tried it on my 08 2LT and it works. Normal and Loud are my options. No quite unfortunately.
bballr4567 04-08-2009, 09:52 PM Know what's funny about this? It's one feature on a few GM vehicles now (rather than the cheap old slide out plastic panels & other extensions) that almost NO one realizes is there, until accidentally pulling in a different direction one day.
I knew about it from reading but my mother, for instance, it took her nearly 8 months and then one day she came home saying "did you know my sunvisors slide sideways? I didn't and then I saw the little arrow..." I've read the exact same comments from many on the Buick Enclave board time and time again, too. One of those little things you don't know unless you know, especially with little notation other than the tiny arrow on the post.
Same here. I finally got in the car one day when I didnt have my sunglasses and had to use the shade and then saw the arrows. I was like, huh?? Pulled on it and was really surprised at it. Very neat feature and way better than the crappy plastic slide outs in the past.
Macleod52 04-08-2009, 10:06 PM When I was test driving a few malibu's I noticed that the car had an auto down feature on the driver's window (standard nowadays). I think I recall it having an auto up too. Is that correct, and if so is there one for the passenger side too?

Also, I tested the chime volume thing and it works on my car.

BLUE-BU 04-09-2009, 08:46 AM Here is an odd feature that is not obvious unless you read the manual. The padded center console lid slides forward a couple of notches to adjust to your arm. I actually prefer it in the normal position but on a long trip it might be nice to adjust forward.
DOACanada 04-13-2009, 07:32 AM OK, in advertenly discovered this as I was curious while cleaning the car this weekend. It appeared to me at first that the side mirrors were on pivot points.
Sure enough the side mirrors fold into the car; I am guessing this is a damn handy feature to protect them when getting in and out of tight spots or to protect them when you park from being hit.
Didn't know this one and thought it was kind of interesting....Downside though...A new little area for dirt to get trapped in, now I will have to clean that area also when washing the Bu'
I have a 2009 Red 2LT
Cheers,
hrdcorliftr33 04-13-2009, 09:13 AM I love this stuff. It is fun to know that we can discover new stuff about our BU's that we did not know before...
dominogold 04-13-2009, 04:30 PM The chime volume works on my car too... hold down #6 on the radio with the radio and car off and the key in the on position.
engineer25 04-13-2009, 08:05 PM Don't know how many know, or if it has been stated before, but the cup holders themselves can be removed from the center for easier clean-up.
redhorse 04-14-2009, 07:22 AM I've read in this thread that the headlights come on when the wipers have been on for "a time" (30 seconds?) So here's an interesting question. How do I know for sure (short of stopping the car and getting out) that the headlights are really on? In my Grand Prix, I just used the button to dim/brighten the dash lights (that let me know the headlights were on). In my Boo, during the day, with the headlights turned on, the dash lights won't dim! They dim at night fine.
Anyone else noticed this?

My dash lights dim anytime the headlights click on, day or night. I noticed it this morning on the way to work,, It was bright out but cloudy/rainy and when the lights clicks on my dash dimmed down

I double checked mine this morning. I turned on the headlights, no dimming of the dash lights. After the headlights were on, I was not able to dim the dashlights at all. I turned them on/off several times and nothing happened to the dashlights. Anyone else notice this? Do I need to have the dealer check this out?
I did figure out a way to see if the lights were on: if they are, when I turn on the brights, I get the blue 'bright lights' indicator. If they are not on, the indicator may flash blue but will not stay on steady.
bballr4567 04-14-2009, 01:33 PM How many of you are checking to see if the dimmer switch is all the way up. If it is you will not notice it dimming at all.
redhorse 04-14-2009, 01:36 PM How many of you are checking to see if the dimmer switch is all the way up. If it is you will not notice it dimming at all.
But even when I turn the dimmer switch, I can't get the dashlights to dim/brighten at all -- during the day. After dark, it works great... I put the dimmer dial midway this morning, and turned the headlights on/off. No dimming.
bballr4567 04-14-2009, 01:44 PM I think it has to do with the auto sensor feeling that its still daylight out.

The internal lights will only dim when the light sensor detects that it is night time... if you have the auto light setting activated. It senses light outside, and puts the headlights into daytime mode, and boosts your inside lights to be bright enough to see during daylight, and thus they can't be dimmed. At night, it detects darkness and turns the headlights to a brighter night time setting, while setting the inside lights to be adjusted by the dimmer. If you turn the auto headlight function off, and then the headlights off, and it is night time, you will notice the inside lights get really bright, like it is daytime. If you don't use the auto headlight feature, turning the headlights on will make the inside lights dimmable and turning the lights off will likely make them not dimmable. I'm keen to this because I can hear a static noise associated with the dimmer and wish that that boosted interal light setting could be always on independent of the auto headlight function, but it can't. Nothing is broken.

kc650 04-15-2009, 12:39 PM To clarify slhaas' point, the dash lights only dim when it is dark outside and "AUTO LIGHTS ON" (as it reads in the DIC) is activated. This is the default--when you start the car, "AUTO LIGHTS ON" is automatically active and the running lights, headlights, and dash lights react to the amount of daylight the sensor detects.
But you should also know that if the sensor "thinks" it's daytime and you force the headlights on by turning the light switch on, you still can't dim the dash lights. That's to keep you from making the displays so dim they can't be read in the daylight. In the owner's manual, this is the feature referred to as "Parade Dimming."
The ONLY time the dash lights can be adjusted is at night (or in a dark garage...or if you have the sensor covered up...etc.).
NOW...on to another subject...is it really true that the headlights automatically come on after the wipers have been on for a while? I've never noticed this! I'll have to experiment! Is this true even when the wipers are on "intermittent"?

Can you dim the dash lighting if the auto light function is turned off and the headlights are on? I would assume if auto lights are off, the light sensor isn't being used, and thus the dimmer is triggered by the lights being turned on. Maybe not though, as I haven't tried it, nd myabe the light sensor is used anyway.

Yep it is true, my 05 had the same system. When it rained and the wipers were on (even intermittent) after a while the headlights would come on.
Neat feature (I think anyway):)
Macleod52 04-15-2009, 04:03 PM This really isn't a feature, but something I noticed while reading the manual. It states not to use Fix-A-Flat (or similar product) if you have a flat tire, yet if you have the hybrid or other w/out a spare, it comes with a can of "fix-a-flat" and air compressor. Unless this is a totally different animal, they totally contradict themselves. lol

LMAO I have been doing the exact same thing then I would get mad when it would randomly fall off the clip during fill-up.... hahahahah now I can't wait to go get more fuel.
Sparks 05-01-2009, 02:48 AM Something I noticed today, if you have the wipers on delay...when the car goes over 50 mph the wipers automatically go full time.
This doesn't happen with my 08 2LT. Since I use Aquapel on my windshield I rarely have the wipers on full time. My daily commute is 75% highway speeds and my wipers never change to full time when I use the delay setting.
Update:
Since it is raining this morning I played with this on the way to work. What I found is that if your delay timer is set to the "fastest" setting then indeed the delay time does go to zero and they are just like they are set on full time. I never change the delay timing from the "slowest" setting so even at highway speeds the delay is still there.
Delphi_Man 05-01-2009, 09:31 AM Sparks:
I too use the slowest setting and have applied a second coat of Aquapel to my windshield. The rain didn't shimmy up the windshield as fast as I thought it would after the first coat of Aquapel.
Hopefully that's all I need. Will need to drive in the rain to see if the second coat helps though.

slhaas 05-01-2009, 11:07 AM I believe the auto wipers work on any speed setting on the intermittent option (the first click up). If you have it on slow or fast will determing how much slower or faster they will go with speed, but it still varies based on speed. It isn't just at 50mph either. There are a few steps. I know it changes at 40 as well, and probably a few spots, but I haven't taken the time to map them out.
kc650 05-02-2009, 07:38 AM I haven't taken the time to experiment with this, either, but I have learned that if you have it set at the highest intermittent setting, when you hit about 50 mph the wipers will run continuously.
On the lower settings, you just get more wipes the faster you go--there's probably a point on the lower settings where you'll get to continuous wiping. On the lowest setting, it's probably about 200 mph (ha ha).

Go to the OLM in the DIC. Hold the enter AND info button at the same time for 3 seconds. Itll reset.
GM didnt rewrite the manual for the 09s and the procedure was changed from the 08s.
To start a new thread go to what section you want to post in and there should be a button that says "new thread"

"Oil Life Monitor" in the DIC which is short for "Drivers Information Center". In the little display on the dashboard, that you control with the info button on the steering wheel, navigate to (hit info over & over) the Oil Life Monitor, then hold enter and info together on that screen and it will reset.

That is what we were saying. I guess I was referring to the <-- as the enter button. When you look at a keyboard the enter key has the word enter and a similar arrow.
There is also a gas pedal method, but it doesn't work on my car and I've only seen two people say it works for them.
crm2019 05-06-2009, 02:06 PM i just noticed on the sunvisors, on the side towards the rearview mirror, the square looking things (that look to be a continuation of the clip for the ceiling) are little holders that you can stick things in, like pictures, etc. ill post a picture later if you dont catch what im saying.
I've got a question for folks out there. There doesn't seem to be any mention of this in the manual - is there a way to switch between FM radio and the CD player using the steering wheel controls?
I've got the 2008 LTZ with the 6 disk changer.

I checked and see what you're talking about. 1 little plastic clip on each visor, the side opposite of the mirror, to hold a piece of paper or whatnot.
peterh 05-08-2009, 08:27 AM Here is another one, the auto volume control.
If you press the Menu button, then the second tab (from left to right) should show auto volume.
Select the auto volume, and choose between 3 settings (low, medium, high), then as you drive and the speed increases so does the radio / CD volume.
I have mine set on medium and when I hit 80-90 Km/h you notice the radio increasing in volume.

batbu 08-08-2009, 01:28 PM OK, I'm literally obsessed with my new car, so I'm always in it fooling around with stuff. I sometimes find new accessories and features that I didnt know the Malibu had. For instance, today I was trying to clean the third brakelight which is almost impossible to clean btw. I see a tab sticking out of the interior, when I pull it, a sunscreen comes up that connects to the interior roof of the car behind the headrests...I never knew that was there. The other day I was driving and made a sharp turn, my elbow that was on the center arm rest slid, and the arm rest slid with it... I thought I had broke it at first but no, the arm rest moves forward and backwards. My question is, have you guys found anything in your cars which you didnt know where there? whew that was a long post.

OMalibu09 08-09-2009, 05:28 PM The salesperson told me about the center armrest. I have always complained about sun-visors, when the sun is at my 4 o’clock, they aren’t long enough to keep the sun from burning the left side of my face; why couldn’t someone add an extension to the visors? The Malibu’s visors side out giving full protection from the bright sun.
texasrox 08-10-2009, 12:37 PM Noticed a while back, Open the console lid to the large underneath area, you can then pull up & out the divider between the cup holder area & the console storage area. You can then store larger objects there.

Anytime you press the "lock" or "unlock" buttons the lights will light up though.
I kind of like the fact that it doesnt make a sound at first. I can hear the doors lock, so im not worried that it isnt. My Honda Civic always makes that annoying sound whenever I press to the buttons to unlock or lock the doors. very annoying.
Hope this helps.

It only does it on the LTZ as the fan is electronically controlled - the other malibus, like my LT1 dont. :( but still a nice touch, none the less.

Yes the ventilation system intake is down below the base of the windshield. On my Olds Intrigue there was a water deflector that fell off and the rain water ended up running into the ventilation fan. Got the deflector glued back on, then had to replace the fan motor a month later, cause the water messed up the lube on the motor bearings.
09Maliblu 08-15-2009, 03:44 PM Is that rear sun shade only in the LTZ? I checked my LT and didn't find anything.
