Isn't this a strategic mistake in the sense that the Malibu came out of the Opel division and could be a source of other great products?

"Fiat is in talks to buy a majority stake in GM's Opel unit. Fiat's Marchionne held talks in Berlin over Opel last week, according to people familiar with the matter. Any Opel deal would be contingent on the outcome of the Fiat-Chrysler talks."

Who knows, but GM needs to look to their over seas divisions for guidance. I mean look at Opel and Holden, prime examples of where GM needs to, and should, be.

Actually it would be better if GM let Opel go. I really wouldn't say Opel played such a great roll in the new Malibu, Chevrolet has been working on it for a year before they unveiled it. GM needs to look at what the customer WANTS and not what some executvie thinks they want.

This may be true, but I think Opel had a large role in the new Malibu. Their designs from years back influenced it quite heavily and were brought over for Saturn, and then were brought in to Malibu.
