Good Morning Everyone.

I have a 2007 Malibu LT 2007 that has been giving me fits with cruise control just cutting out going down the highway. Last night I was following my wife home (she was driving the malibu) and I wondered why she was "riding" the brake pedal because her brake lights where constantly on. But then when we came to a light or stop sign, when she obviously should be braking, the brake lights went off!

I believe the car is still under factory warranty, but wondered if any of you fine folks had some answers, suggestions.

:D

Thanks for the responses everyone. I took the Malibu to our local Chevrolet dealership yesterday. What surprised me was the rep I talked to mentioned going out to the forums to see if anyone else had this issue. I thought to myself, "I have done that dude, I thought you guys were professionals!" Anyway, whatever the problem, its covered according to him, as well as the chipping paint on the door handles.

Thanks Again!!:)

Just because they're professional's does not mean that they know everything. I'd be glad they are using every resourse to find a fix than rely soley on one source, or something they learned 20 years ago in mechanical school. I think that was a good move on their part. Also, they may have an official GM forum where all mechanics discuss problems and fixes.

HA! I have had this exact same issue... I "fix" it by lifting up on the brake pedal. I first noticed it driving home from the dealership... couldn't get the cruise to engage... finally figured it out when I noticed the brake lights were on when I was definitely not stepping on the pedal.

I took it to a chevy dealer to have it fixed, they didn't even touch it... Shaheen Chevy in Lansing... never going back there... I had an issue with the turn signal lever and they didn't even so much as touch it!

So then I took it to a saturn dealer, always get great service on my Vue from them, figured the Aura and the Bu are basically the same thing... only they told me they couldn't fix it, suggested I take it to a Chevy dealer... which I'll be doing soon. Luckily of the 5 in the Lansing area there are still 3 I'm willing to patronize.

just had this problem on my "new to me" 06 malibu. There is a tsb about this issue and it has nothing to do with the brake switch by the pedal everyone talks about. It's another connection over on the passenger side. Also fixes interlock problems trying to pull shifter from park. Will get tsb number and let you know Sat, Oct 24

ok here is what I found, #08-05-22-009: Intermittently Brake Lights (Stop Lamp) Do Not Function Correctly, Extended Travel to Shift Out of Park, Cruise Control Inoperative, DTC C0161/C0277 Set (Perform Repair as Outlined) - (Dec 4, 2008)

Subject: Intermittently Brake Lights (Stop Lamp) Do Not Function Correctly, Extended Travel to Shift Out of Park, Cruise Control Inoperative, DTCs C0161/C0277 Set (Perform Repair as Outlined)

Models: 2004-2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx

2008 Chevrolet Malibu Classic

2005-2009 Pontiac G6

2007-2009 Saturn AURA

--------------------------------------…

Condition
Some customers may comment that intermittently the brake lights do not function correctly. Other symptoms may include extended pedal travel required to shift out of PARK, cruise control does not function correctly, and DTC C0161 and/or C0277 may be set.

Cause
The most likely cause of this condition is high resistance due to terminal fretting corrosion in the body control module (BCM) C2 connector (specifically pins C2-18, C2-31 and C2-59).

Correction
DO NOT replace the BCM for this condition. Disconnecting the C2 connector, adding dielectric silicone grease and reconnecting the C2 connector per the procedure below will correct the high resistance condition due to terminal fretting corrosion.

Remove the right side front floor console side trim panel to access to the Body Control Module (BCM).
Locate the C2 connector on the BCM.
Unlatch the C2 connector and disconnect the C2 connector from the BCM.
Reconnect the C2 connector back on the BCM and re-latch.
Repeat Steps 3 and 4 (this step cleans up the terminal fretting corrosion).
Using the Tech 2®, verify the brake pedal position sensor (BPPS) voltage is between:
• 0.88V - 2.11V (for 2004-2006 model years)

• 0.73V - 1.47V (for 2007-2009 model years)

Check for proper operation of the brake lights.
• If the brakes lights are operating properly, remove the C2 connector again from the BCM and proceed to Step 8.

• If the brake lights are not operating properly, proceed to Step 12.

Apply dielectric lubricant (clear gel) GM P/N 12377900 (In Canada, use P/N 10953529) on the BCM C2 pins (apply with a one-inch nylon bristle brush) on all the C2 connector pins (this will treat the pins against fretting corrosion).
Reconnect the C2 connector back on the BCM and re-latch.
Reinstall the right side front floor console side trim panel.
Using the Tech 2®, check that the BPPS ratio is equal to BPPS learned home when the brake pedal is not depressed.
• If they are equal, brake lamps should be operating correctly and no further steps are necessary.

• If they are not equal, perform the Brake Pedal Position Sensor Calibration procedure in SI to complete the repair.

Check the brake lights for proper operation. If incorrect, refer to SI and perform normal diagnostics.

Please pass this on to anyone having cruise/brake light issues. Mine started with the shifter not wanting to move from park. All the same problem

The above TSB has repaired the multiple problems that I had with my Malibu, Thank You "TDinMT" for the post! I started to search for Malibu forums, and joined this one for the sole purpose of trying to get these problems fixed that three garages and one Chevrolet dealer could not. And after literally 30 seconds of searching here, and two minutes in the passenger footwell, of my car, two years of problems have been quickly and inexpensively fixed by a nobody (me)!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!

This same problem is happening with 2008 Malibu. Does anyone know if the solution TDinMT gave will work for the next generation Malibus?

I would appreciate any input.

It can if the problem is fretting of the terminals.

Dear billmccormick,

The TSB information that TDinMT has provide is valuable information. Please, keep in mind that the symptoms that you are experiencing might not be what the TSB information is. There are many components that can throw the symptoms that a TSB may outline, but then end up being something else. It will all vary on each individual situation. For this reason and many others, I do recommend that people take their vehicles into the dealership to be diagnosed. The techs can determine if this information will pertain to your specific situation and they have the specific warranty information that pertains to your vehicle. Who knows, they could take a look into your vehicle and it might be something that is covered under a warranty.

Sincerely,
Michelle, Chevrolet Customer Service
