: No Tire-pressure sensors?
Mattchu60 08-22-2009, 08:50 AM Hello,
I am looking at replacing the wheels on my Malibu with something else. I have a question though, if I do not get TPS sensors in my new wheels, what will happen on my DIC? Will it just skip over the info on tire pressure or will some type of error message display?
Thanks
86lxjunker 08-22-2009, 09:34 AM I am pretty sure you will get warning light and/or DIC warning as well.
I've never tried it....but Im sure it will be something pretty annoying.

Well there is one way to try. Jack the car up and put it on blocks. Take all four wheels off and move them far enough away from the vehicle (not sure how far is far enough) and start the car.
If you don't know what putting your car up on blocks means just head on down to your local trailer park, you'll get the picture.
Pizza Man 08-22-2009, 12:43 PM Someone will need to verify this, but no TPMS may also shut down the Traction Control System.
Marshmellow_Malibu 08-22-2009, 02:01 PM there will be a yellow warning light on your dash that will come up and STAY up. it happpened to me when i got my new wheels and tires. whats wierd is that the guy who i talked to at town fair tire said that TPMS sensors cant be on aftermarket wheels, can someone confirm this?

I'm pretty sure most if not all GM sensors are the same as far as mounting. And I know several truck guys, including myself, who have or have had aftermarket wheels on 07+ GM's with functioning sensors. So, I'm going to say, no, he is wrong. I had no problems with my 08 Avalanche and aftermarket wheels.
TonyBu 08-22-2009, 07:32 PM This is my first car with TPS, where are they located? on the rims or in the tires? :o
jacen98 08-22-2009, 07:45 PM inside the tire connected to the back side of the valve stem.

 thanks

The traction control system uses the ABS sensors. I also checked the manual, under the section on the TPMS warning light, it did not indicate any conection to the TCS.

I had my sensors X-fered to my new rims and have no problems with the TPMS ;)

Marshmellow_Malibu 08-23-2009, 06:46 AM woow so that salesman at Town Fair Tire does not know what he is talking about then, did you get then transfered at a chevy dealership? or a local store?
Sly Bob 08-23-2009, 07:22 AM Yeah you just remove them with a wrench from the old wheel and install them in the new one. Not hard at all as the sensor is attached to the back of the valve stem.

Local tire shop ;)
AirForce1136 08-24-2009, 08:28 PM I just got aftermarket wheels from Tire Rack and they installed the TPMS in the wheels when shipped. When I put them on I had to follow the pattern to reset the DIC and it works like a charm now. Its totally worth the 14.99 I spent to have them installed in the wheels
Mattchu60 09-01-2009, 09:06 AM I wanted to post an update. I got new wheels/tires for the car. The new ones are the LTZ wheels but no sensors in them. I expected some type of warning light to come on...instead what is happening is that the tire pressures are reading what they were for the old wheels, it just does not update. I drove to work (10 miles away from home where the old wheels are) and it just continued to read the same PSI the whole time. I am thinking the DIC will stay this way, its just waiting for the sensors to send a different reading...which it will never do.

It did that with me too.... when I put the wheels on I didnt update the PSI. I drove for about 20 miles and it kicked on..... I hope it stays like that for ya bit mine wasn't having it so I had to fix it right there and then

Well on the way home the system lights came on and warning message on the DIC. I am getting the sensors from my old wheels stripped out in a few days to put in the new wheels.
jedijome 10-07-2009, 07:47 PM does anyone know the part number for a new set of sensors so i can buy them off ebay or something?
not sure which ones to get for my 2008 malibu.
ChevyMgr 10-07-2009, 08:52 PM The sensor part number is 25920615 for '08 and '09. But the sensors transfer from stock wheels to new wheels.
You will also lose remote start if the TPMS light is on.
Macleod52 10-19-2009, 01:02 PM For those of you who had the light go off: Could you still flip through the other DIC functions (avg. economy, trip, etc.)? Also how often did the car chime? Just once, or repeatedly? I just ordered steelies & snow tires and didn't get TPMS. I'm hoping it's like the grand am and Mazda where it'll chime and let you know that nothing is hooked up but that's it.
Macleod52 11-30-2009, 08:23 AM Okay, I just put my snow tires on the car. Here's what happens
It takes approx. 8 miles for it to determine that the sensors have "failed". The car has a fast chime that goes off three times and the tire pressure light starts flashing. After about 10 seconds it becomes a solid light.
The DIC states "SVS Tire Sensor" or something like that and it will stay on the DIC until you hit the info button.
I did not test to see if putting the tires in the trunk would prevent the system recognizing the different tires on the car.
Malo83 11-30-2009, 09:59 AM ?, when you rotate your tires and you don't update the sensors on the DIC when you check the front tire press are you really checking the rears and vice versa???
Silver LTZ 11-30-2009, 10:28 AM I know when I had the sensors from my stock wheels added to my new 20's Discount Tire Direct had to scan the sensors one by one for the car to see them. You might have to get this done. If the sensors are in a different place, even by a little the car won't sense them correctly.

That is correct. You need to relearn the tires in order to have them show up correctly. I believe there is a re-learn process in the owner's manual, otherwise there's instructions on this site.
Malo83 12-01-2009, 10:32 AM Thanks guys, I rotated mine a while back but never recaled the TPMS, I keep my tires aired at 32 psi and use a digital tire gauge so i'm not gonna worry about it :D even though the tires are all at 32 the DIC still has all the tire pressures a couple of psi off ;)
MJW7800 10-27-2010, 11:53 PM bump from the past
ok,,soo i just bought some 20's with tires
there is no TPS in them now,
what are the only issues
just the sound, and the light will be on the dash the whole time?
or at least till u push info on the wheel?
no other issues will happen correct?
iv seen used tps sets range from 65-115$
then theres the fact i gotta get them remounted and balances,,so bout 60$
i just dont know if its worth the hassle and money
i mean i keep an eye on the pressure myself every couple days
thanks mike
Silver LTZ 10-28-2010, 06:45 AM Having that chime and light would annoy the hell out of me. Just spend the apx. $100 and get the sensors.
FYI, the tires DO NOT need to be remounted and balanced to add them. A good shop can break the bead and put them in.

Funny, I called a local rim shop to see if my old 20's would fit on the Mali and he told me all about the sensors, and also told me he would definitely have to take the rims off the tires, then re-balance them.
He said the whole job would cost $250 including parts. I guess thats how he makes ~$150 labor plus whatever profit he gets on the sensors.
I guess I'll be looking around to other tire shops to do this for me without unmounting the wheels.

I used Discount tire. They did it for me two times. If you buy the sensors through them you might even get a discount.
MJW7800 10-28-2010, 02:57 PM im look on ebay and stuff for a set of used ones
i called my tire shop, and he said some sensors they can slide in,,some not,,depending on wheel, and how stretched the tire is on the rim,,etc
the 20's already have tires on them,,since i bought them used,so i may just put them on for a little till snow, and then keep them mall winter
does anyone know what sensors out there are interchangable?
G6's,,cts,,aura's?
thanks
