: Just Venting
pwinskey 06-05-2008, 03:18 PM Why is it when anyone sees my new car they say "You got rid of the BMW?" in an apologetic way? It is really starting to grind on my nerves. Yeah I liked the car but it had it's issues. Whenever I say how much I like my new bu they are like "yeah it's nice too" but look unconvinced. Then they will ask if I tried the Camry or Accord yes and the Malibu was better in all areas to me. Once I sat in it I knew I could not get back in the Camry (which is what I originally was buying).
I really like my new car! It is quieter, has (in my opinion) a nicer interior and feels really solid. The other car was fun to drive but was noisy (rwd), would leak water in the passenger floor board when it rained, had issues with the window regulator, sun roof problems, electrical that would go on when it was not suppose to and the list continues.
For me this purchase was about comfort and value and I really feel I have that with the Malibu. I just wanted to tell other Malibu owners who I know understand and finally get this off my chest because it has been going on since the car was bought.
Maybe I will put a sign in the window "Yes I traded" and be done with it!! :D Everyone who has riden in it is shocked at how nice it is. They remark on the quiet ride and how nice it is inside and then I tell them this is why I bought the car. There I feel better now!
jtblazeltw 06-05-2008, 04:24 PM Right along with you, I owned a 325xi back in the day, and yeah it was a nice car until you needed to make any type of repairs, then all you needed to do is bend over and grab your ankles because your getting it. In my opinion people base their status too much on what car you drive, its just a car, nothing more, don’t get me wrong when your up to the high dollar cars about 100k plus then yeah theirs a difference, but for a daily driver just get what fits you best and what you like best, or as I tell all of my friends with imports, “I am proud to be American to I buy American.” I don’t give a rats a$$ where it is built as long as the dollar stays here. From my experience domestic cars tend to have a lower resale cost but you will save that difference over the years is maintenance and parts, cost of overall ownership is less. Bottom line get what you want, just because you buy a BMW, Lexus, Mercedes etc. doesn’t make your pecker any bigger. Just my 2 cents.
Pizza Man 06-05-2008, 04:39 PM I understand totally, pwinsky. I let go of a Cadillac Seville that I enjoyed for many years. I don't miss it in the least. The wife wanted a new car, something not as large. I thought she meant a CTS, but I was wrong. Our daughter has a CTS and my wife thought the ride, although, nice was a bit too harsh. I suggested the new Accord, she looked into the interior and said no thanks.
I've been hearing a lot of good things about the Malibu and took her to see one. She sat behind the wheel, smiled and asked if it came in red. She's been smiling ever since.
NJMalibuman 06-05-2008, 05:00 PM You know what the problem is here, the public is so manipulated by the media that always bashs domestics and praises the imports that the public begins to get brain washed sort off speak. I hate people that say imports are great and domestics poop. I have had it said to me all the time. My relpy is have you ever driven a domestic or owned on? and how do you now imports are better? and usaully their reply is will I heard that they are on will I've riden in one. People like that just piss me off and I just want to yell at them and tell the to shut the **** up. Brain washed idiots

Wow!! I totally understand where you are coming from. I had a 2003 GMC Denali, which I traded in for My Malibu, instead of people saying wow your new car is nice everyone says "You traded in the Denali?"
As soon as I got it, a couple of people said why did'nt I get the camry or accord, I said "Because the Malibu looks and is better"
But it will take a while for people to buy into the fact that this car is GREAT, not good or ok. GREAT.
FYI, Google Search: "2008 Toyota Camry Transmission Problems"
There is about 12-20 Web Pages on this issue.
GM is back with a Vegance, but wait GM Never went away.
:D
NJMalibuman 06-05-2008, 05:45 PM See thats what people don't see they are so caught up in reading or hearing that imports all the best that they don't even see what great new cars are coming out of Detroit.
mpoczobut 06-05-2008, 05:51 PM It's funny you bring this up... I traded in my 06 Cadillac CTS for my 08 Malibu LTZ. One of my good friends asked me if I got a new car and I said yes. They asked how I liked the new CTS; I told them I bought a Malibu... She responded with "oh...". I had the same reaction as you! Yes I would have loved another CTS, but for the difference in price there was no way I could pass up this wonderful car! Other people can't believe that I love my Malibu more than my 06 CTS. People's perception of Chevrolet needs to change and hopefully these awards and recognitions will wake people up!
bignick 06-05-2008, 06:04 PM i've always driven trucks, i traded in my 04 gmc ext cab sierra for my malibu, it's not as roomy, but it aint bad, it's an extremely nice car, and i'm planning on getting married and needed to save some money and boy, is it cheaper on gas, i use to spend $60 every 3-4 days, now i spend about $40 every 7-8 days. i love the car, just wish it was a bit bigger. I use to drive bmws all day when I worked there, this car isn't quite a 3 series but it handles damn good for a chevy and the ride is excellent.
pwinskey 06-05-2008, 07:44 PM Thanks for the support!! I knew I came to the right place today for my "vent session". I find that status symbols don't amount to much if you are always having to pull out your wallet to fix them or worried that something is going to break and leave you stranded. I do love my car and I make no apologies for it.
Yes Toyotas do have problems. I had a 2001 Highlander that had engine sludge, even with the proper oil changes and because of it the engine had to be re-built with the dealership charging me sales tax on the labor! Thank God my father saw an old article on the sludge thing or I would have had to pay for the entire job not just the sales tax. They hid that info and never put out a TSB but there was a side bar in the article he read that said if it happened that Toyota would fix the problem. Yeah they fixed it and the car was never the same. Then got into the BMW more issues. I am not saying imports are all crap but like any vehicle they have issues too only people do not like to own up to them all the time.
jtblazeltw is right the resale may be lower but over time compaired with upkeep, factoring cost of parts and labor it all works out in the end usually. Plus usually the car is cheaper in the begining anyway so I do not feel I am losing anything. The same options that I have on my Malibu would have cost thousands more on an Accord or Camry and I still would not have half the car I own in my driveway now.
FenwickHockey65 06-05-2008, 09:52 PM BMWs are very nice cars, but the Malibu just has a certain appeal and look to it that I can't really find in any current BMWs.
You made a good decision, don't let others convince you otherwise!
Malibooboo 06-16-2008, 03:03 PM BMWs may be nice, but they aren't me because I think they are a snooty car. and I'm not paying them all that money just to have the Bimmer name on my vehicle.

DOACanada 06-17-2008, 08:57 AM There are those of us who need and want the status symbol....and than there are those of us who are rationale and know good value when they see it!
