: More Problems With The Bu
Darren 10-04-2009, 02:41 PM So Today noticed that when I pulled away/ turned the wheel to the left I hear a clunk/rattle noise and feels like its in the steering , and also noticed that the passenger side door is falling apart , where you put your hand in to close well that piece is coming right out and the door feels loose. I know it hasn't been beaten hard , Im the only one that drives and theres maybe three people that are in that seat.
Just getting fed up sort to speak , going to bring it in for service sometime
this week when I get a chance , need a few more minor things fixed as well.
Also wondering if anyone has similar issues with the steering wheel pop/clunk noise?
Red Ryder 10-04-2009, 08:57 PM I hate to admit it, mine still has some "clunk" going on. I'm also going to make an appointment to take it in for a look see this week. seems as it gets colder, the worse it gets. This was the same last year around this time when i took it in and they lubed the ISS. It seemed to help, but this time i'm thinking it's more of a strut bearing issue. I may be wrong, we'll see. Just remember that all cars have some kind of issues regardless of make or model and we are not alone. Overall i still love the car and still get complements on the car from total strangers. Just take it in and let them see what they can do. Keep us posted on what they find.
Darren 10-05-2009, 03:42 AM Hey Red Ryder you have a clunk as well? does it happen all the time or just certain turns? Mine seems to be with left turns only and it's pretty noticable in the passenger side , going to call today trying to get an appointment sometime this week. It's so hard working before there open and after there already closed so I usually have to get someone else to bring it in.
I love the car dont get me wrong I'm just tired of bringing it in some issues been in for repair more than once , I understand that too but if you seen some of these repairs..lol there not horrible but I don't have time to bring it in as it is and I have a folder full of sheets haha anyway I'll post if i find out what is wrong , thanks for your reply.
Macleod52 10-05-2009, 07:20 AM Sounds like a tie rod issue. This problem seems to plague GM.
Geeze 10-05-2009, 10:26 AM I hate to admit it, mine still has some "clunk" going on. I'm also going to make an appointment to take it in for a look see this week. seems as it gets colder, the worse it gets. Our 08 Malibu had a clunk in the steering. It was most noticable when straightening back out after a left hand turn. It eneded up being a lower steering shaft. The service writer said that GM changed a sleeve inside this shaft from metal to plastic and it was a common problem. They put in a new shaft under warranty at 25,000 miles. Things like this part shouldn't wear out at 25,000 miles. This Malibu isn't the car Chevy hyped it to be!
Darren 10-05-2009, 02:11 PM I Agree with you Geeze , these problems shouldn't be happening so early , love the car , looks great but it has it's quirks like most cars. I just Figured there wouldn't be as much for example I had
1. Whole new seat cover replaced due to foam going everywhere ( it's still happening )
2. The outside drivers weatherstrip on the roof was pulling up and coming off, they replaced it but from day 1 it was still coming off and looks like there all kinds of screw driver marks in it.
3 . The door scraping the paint issue , still didnt get that resolved they just lubed it and said I should be lubing/ greasing it but I think im going to go further with this.
4. The rear bumper clip issue where it comes off thats all fixed now lol
Now I got the Clunk noise in the steering wheel along with the door part coming off , its just kinda pissin me off , it's been in for more than that , it's just what i can remember. My car is only a 2008/30,000 KM on it
Darren 10-09-2009, 01:30 PM So just got the Bu back from the dealer , got an oil change , they ordered a new weather strip yet again , tightened the screws that hold the door bezel in place , and the clunk , well they checked and didn't find anything so now we got to go for a test run when the weather strip comes in , getting so frusterated...
I just got my intermediate steering shaft repaired that was causing all my suspension noise when I hit small or large bumps on the road. Have them check the intermediate steering shaft.

Darren 10-27-2009, 01:34 PM Hey thanks Jeff for the reply.
Im still waiting for them to take it in , there waiting for another part to come in, but it seems to be getting more and more annoying its getting worst if anything , so may try to get it in earlier.
But i'll definitley run by what you said, thanks again.
csmjvh 10-27-2009, 02:41 PM I also have this clunk. They are charging me to lube it. SO it will cost about $80. $18 for the kit and $60 for an hour of shop labor. I have read that they are replacing the ISS in some cars. I may ask them to do that. There apparently was a revision after the early 08 cars were made.
They shouldn't be charging you anything. All under 3 yr 36K warranty.
Darren 10-28-2009, 08:38 PM Thats ridiculous they definitely shouldn't be charging you , and thats kinda steep to lube it up...I dont think I want a new car again, it's cheaper to have an old one least you can do everything yourself , ah well still waiting to hear from Chevy going to call them tomorrow steering is getting worst every day
Sparks 10-30-2009, 02:28 PM I just got my intermediate steering shaft repaired that was causing all my suspension noise when I hit small or large bumps on the road. Have them check the intermediate steering shaft.
Jeff
Same thing here. Had the steering clunk when straightening out from a right hand turn and noise when hitting bumps. The dealer replaced the intermediate steering shaft (under warranty) and both issues are gone.
Darren 11-08-2009, 07:29 PM So today I find more problems with the bu , now the rear passenger door wont lock or unlock with the keyfob sometimes it does other it doesn't or just goes half way. Still waiting for appointment with the dealership to get my steering issue looked at while it gets worst ugh getting so frusterated
Darren 11-25-2009, 08:01 PM So I got the steering issue fixed , they replaced the steering shaft and also they fixed my lock issue but while fixing the lock issue I notice when i got home ( I Had someone take it over for me ) that the door handle wont work on the door that had the lock replaced , so it locks but I can't open it from the outside lol , also the roof weatherstrip they forgot to put it on
yyz_ltz 11-26-2009, 06:30 AM Sorry, but I think you got one of the oddball cars that are plagued with issues. It seems to happen in all models and makes. There is always the odd one that won't let up on small but aggravating issues. GM has changed the ISS for new models '09 and up. The steering shaft has been wonky since'02. My '06 GP had it replaced under warranty @40K miles.
Darren 11-26-2009, 04:36 PM Yeah I know all cars have their quirks and I prob got the oddball but the oddball is driving me crazy the main thing is the dealer is closed before and after work so I have to get someone to bring it in for me and its just frusterating making appointments and then to cancle them , then they fix one thing and another breaks I love the car but im still looking for a while at trade ins but dunno how that will turn out haha
gatzze 12-15-2009, 12:38 AM I love the car, looks great. these problems shouldn't be happening so early ,but it has it's quirks like most cars.
E_Net_Rider 12-16-2009, 04:06 AM So I got the steering issue fixed , they replaced the steering shaft and also they fixed my lock issue but while fixing the lock issue I notice when i got home ( I Had someone take it over for me ) that the door handle wont work on the door that had the lock replaced , so it locks but I can't open it from the outside lol , also the roof weatherstrip they forgot to put it on
As to that roof line weatherstrip, and also the one at the rear window, this appears to be an issue with all vehicles of this body, including Saturn. Mine showed up with less than 1000 miles.
Nearly every vehicle I've looked at has this issue, exception, new on lot.
Another case of idiot engineers lacking experience and lack of testing by GM.
It seems the fix would be a slightly wider and maybe thicker weather strip.
