Hey i have a 1998 Malibu 3.1L V6 and i was wondering if anyone knows if the engine is a non-interference engine or an interference engine?
reason i ask if my timing chain skipped some teeth making it so i cant start the car and im going to be replacing it and if its a interference engine then there is no point as sometihng is most likely bent
all help is apprecated

If it's an interference engine then just cranking it will tell you that you have a major problem. If a valve has already contacted a piston while running, the damage is done and it's too late.

If you have a timing CHAIN then it's not likely it jumped a tooth. If you have a timing BELT then it's very possible, especially if it's over 60K miles since it was new. Check your owner's manual for the replace interval.

A timing chain CAN jump a tooth if the tensioner and the chain are worn enough, that's why there's a service interval on replacing the timing chain and tensioner.

I don't think the 3100 is an interference design but, there's still a chance more damage can happen if you do have a timing chain issue.

What though is the MAIN reason for the NO-START? Are you sure you have spark? Fuel?
Have you had anyone use a diagnostic tool to see what's going on?
