Hello
New to the forum. Owned 2003 Malibu for 2 1/2 years.
No problems with car until recently.
Every now and then, the ignition will stop at the accessory position, or between accessory and OFF. I can remove the key, but the odometer and radio won't turn off when the door opens.
If I hit the ignition with my palm, and reinsert the key, it usually turns to the OFF position and everything is OK.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any advice?

Could it be the key is getting old? Kinda gets used so much that it loses the teeth and smooths out. Maybe you should have a new key cut and see if it still does it.

Lock cylinder is wearing out. On my 99 Intrigue I could remove the key with the engine running. (then some security warning light would come on)

I sorta have the same issue. I have to giggle the shift knob to get the lock button to unlock so that I can get the key out of the ignition.

I realize this won't help those who's having the problem already, but a heavy keychain will prematurely wear out the ignition switch. That's why I carry two keychains.

yeah my 98 is the same way i can pull the key out with engine running and the teeth are wore down pretty good it doesnt bother me as long as i make sure the key is shutoff all the way you could try a little wd40 or other light lube to see if it helps

I own a 2000 Malibu LS, and I have recently started experiencing the same thing. I have used the WD40 method, and it works for a while. How would a person go about getting a "new" key cut?

Go to any GM parts counter with your registration card (links you to the car) and driver's license (proves who you are). They'll look up the key code from the VIN on the registration card and then cut you a new key. The price is set by the dealership and thus call around first.

When they cut you the new key it will be a new version of the original pattern. It will not be worn down, but since your ignition switch likely is, it might not work smoothly or at all.
A reputable locksmith give you a good idea of what is needed and what it will take to make it work like new again. You can then either have them do it (yes, then can call GM to get the key code, too) or use what they say to help you at the dealer.
