: Moisture on floor and cotton where the spare tire is kept??
mixdawg1 04-04-2010, 06:54 AM I went to clean out the trunk of my car yesterday when I started to smell something strange. I removed the flooring to see if it was coming from the spare and noticed the cotton underneath the tire was a little wet. This morning I go check to see if it dried (due to the heat yesterday) and noticed it was soaked. I picked up the cotton and checked for holes but nothing. Going to make a appointment 2morrow and will update with the results.
Intill then, has anyone had the same problem?

Sandhopper 04-04-2010, 07:30 AM Well that does not look good. I will check mine to see if there are any signs of moisture. I do know I have a spare tire though since I needed it not too long ago.

Thanks man. I checked around for holes and unsealed sections but nothing. I even checked underneath the car and it was dry.
elcompaLalo 04-04-2010, 09:06 AM Earlier this week I cleaned out the trunk and the spare tire area and found it to be dry and clean. No moisture at all, then again I do live in the desert.
mixdawg1 04-04-2010, 09:54 AM I barely drove the car this winter so maybe the snow and ice that melted underneath it eventually moistened the metal which lead to the soaked cloth. I rather be in the desert then this mess every year lol.
Sandhopper 04-04-2010, 12:22 PM My was dry as a bone... Glad I checked it. The bone head that put my spar back in never tightened it back down. Could have been where that thump was coming from when I went over larger bumps. I assume you did not mistakenly leave the trunk open during a rain or snow storm? Just a thought ;)
Silver LTZ 04-04-2010, 06:00 PM Checked mine, all dry.
ChevyFreak 04-04-2010, 08:51 PM I would keep an eye on it but it is most likely condensation.
bballr4567 04-04-2010, 10:50 PM If you have ever opened the trunk when it was wet, chances are you let water into the trunk. You had to open it slowly and let it flow off or if you let it go all the way up, water will DUMP into the trunk. Yes, Ive done it before.
jeepgrady 04-05-2010, 08:00 AM That moisture is definately too much to be condensation. There has to be a leak somewhere.
mixdawg1 04-07-2010, 01:34 PM I set up a appointment for next thursday (since a outside company does it for my chevy dealership) to check the car for any openings and leaks. Will post with results

Hate to ask...but what were the findings?
Thanks

I had a similar problem on a previous car due to the 3rd brake light which was molded into the trunk. Water would seep in through the 3rd brake light and it would get trapped in the trunk lid. It wouldn't leak into the trunk until you opened the lid. The water would then pour out of the lid into the trunk. The dealer installed a new seal around the brake light and this corrected the problem.
This is kind of a rhetorical question, but has it been raining a lot where you live? If it has been, it can be that a rubber seal is damaged and it's allowing water to enter the trunk. Water travels a long way, so it may not be obvious where it's coming from.
It can also be what other posters have suggested. Did you ever leave the trunk lid ajar (doesn't have to be fully opened) during a rain storm. You may have hit the trunk release button on your key fob by mistake - I've done this and I didn't know the trunk was ajar until I got the message on the DIC. This would obviously account for the wet trunk.
In any case, I would leave the lid open in the hot sun and let it dry out. Leaving the lid closed, even if it's hot outside, won't allow the moisture to escape. I would wipe out the excess water first. Then see if the problem recurs.
CoolandClever1 08-26-2010, 04:48 PM Well, after reading through this forum a couple of days ago I decided to check my trunk out for leaks and unfortunately found out that I have a little standing water sitting in the spare tire area...........:( Just my luck. Probably the cause for the musty odor I've been trying to figure out as well. Just had the car in the shop not too long ago to have the throttle body replaced due to the Bu jerking out on me while driving and displaying engine is running at reduced power on the DIC. I'm a little over 40,000 miles on it now so the 3year/36,000 mile warranty is done. Looks like another trip to the dealer is in order. Its too dag on early for all this crap to start popping up now. I love my car to death but if this is the start of a downward trend I will trade her in and get something else. Will keep you guys posted on the leak situation....
I had that on my 08, it turned out to be where the tail lamp wires go thru the body. the grommet came out and allowed water running along the edge of the trunk to get in behind the taillight
IDONOTKNOW 12-28-2010, 07:28 PM Its the rear window seal on top both sides. $#@%^! up design. I need to take mine in and ask wtf. If you look at the side panels inside of the car by the rear window you will see the water trails.when my rear speakers went out i had to find out what the hell was going on. Just silicon it for now and when i take it to the dealer i will post what the say. Living in los angels the past few weeks sucked with all the rain and a smelly car.
CoolandClever1 06-24-2011, 03:26 PM Finally had this issue looked at after putting it off for while. Got tired of sucking up the water out of my trunk with a shop vac every couple of months...........lol Anyway the problem was in the left rear tail lamp assembly area where it needed to be removed and the body seams around the area resealed.
greenman 06-24-2011, 11:24 PM There's no substitute for putting someone in the trunk with a bright light (mother-in-law comes to mind) & spraying the body (the car body that is) with a hose. Leaks usually reveal themselves pretty quick. Water from leaks usually end up in the tire well.
