: Does anyone else find this forum's site slow??
dpopeck 04-21-2010, 03:58 PM It's great that this site is free (thank you!!), but to be honest it is one of the slower sites I visit. There are times I give up reading posts because it's just so darn slow. I do periodically surf here at odd times (late nights and weekends), and it's never what I'd call fast. I use Comcast cable at home, and I have a higher speed connection at work and it's slow using either. I mainly use Internet Explorer, but I've also tried Firefox and Chrome and it wasn't much different (and Chrome sometimes crashed).
There isn't a tremendous amount of traffic on this site (judging by the frequency of postings).
and it's much snappier. As I'm typing this, the miata site has 647 people online whereas this site has 122 people, so the miata site is also handling a lot more traffic. The miata site is much more active in terms of postings.
Sorry, I'm not trying to promote the miata site. I just wish this forum was as fast.
Are the ads what's slowing it down so much? For those of you that have paid $, did the site get noticeably faster without the ads?
Silver LTZ 04-21-2010, 04:21 PM Works just fine for me, pretty fast actually. But the ads do slow it down. When I first joined I paid for the membership so I could have a sig pic, but once I selected to turn off all the ads it went even better. I just tried turning all the ads back on and it seems fine. Might be a memory issue on your end as I have yet to hear any complaints about it. But the first thing I'd do is stop using IE. That is the slowest most virus prone browser out there. I'd try Firefox on a long-term basis.
I also moved this to the correct section.
jeepgrady 04-21-2010, 04:40 PM Without a doubt, this site is the slowest one I visit. For instance, sometimes it takes probably 10-15 sec. for a page to show, sometimes when hitting the back page button, I must do it 3-4 times for a response.
As the first posted said, I also somtimes give up and go to something else since I just lose my patience.
This is the only site that I have this problem and I also visit other car sites that have the same deasign as this one. I have the same problems whether it's on my laptop or desktop so it's not my computer.
I've previously posted that the " Last visited date and time" segment takes forever to update. For instance I originally typed this post at 7:40. I went to ther sites and came back and am editing this at 7:50, yet my last visit time states today at 3:40. Any other site would have my last visit show 7:40.

Weird, all I can think of is that it is the ads. I have them all off and it flies for me.

Thanks for replying - glad it's not just me. :)
In the sake of partial disclosure, I'm a web developer for a large company. I have 10+ years doing web development, so I'm pretty well versed in web sites, browser issues, etc (though it's all in Java, not php). At work, I'm limited to using IE to get onto the Internet (I can only use Firefox and Safari for internal web site testing).
My work computer is a quad core Pentium with 3 GB of RAM, so it's not a memory issue. At home, I have 2 different desktop computers and a laptop and it doesn't matter which one I use.

All I can suggest it removing the ads. I just tried my wives laptop with all ads on, slower for sure, but not horrible. Then turned them off and it was noticeably quicker. On my desktop (Apple Pro), laptop (Macbook) or on my wives laptop (Acer) with my settings it is super quick. Even at work with all the crap the network has there it is not bad at all, not as quick as my own ones, but not so bad. So all I can think of is the ads. There are alot, too many IMO, but it pays the bills and I have no control over it guys.

Not to beat a dead horse or get too technical, but I clicked the moved link from the General discussion forum, and it took 28.7 seconds for this page to come up at 8:30 pm EST. There was 1 request to http://afe.specificclick.net that took 4.556 seconds and one to http://as.autoforums.com that took 3.947 seconds. And there are a lot of little requests that look ad related, so it looks like turning off ads would help a lot.
There were also a *lot* of little requests for .css and .js files and a surprising number of those weren't cached, so all those little non-cached requests aren't helping. Not sure where this is actually hosted, but based on the displayed times on the forum I'm guessing it's not the East Coast so maybe that's another issue.
But having said all that, I do understand and appreciate the part about "... it pays the bills". :)
elcompaLalo 04-21-2010, 06:04 PM Sponsoring the site will let you remove the side ads, which helped the speed very much for me. After that I ran FireFox with ad-block and it helped even more, and any ad it won't remove immediately you can remove it by selecting it and adding it to the list it removes automatically.

Good point about the Ad Block. That should help alot in Firefox.
jeepgrady 04-22-2010, 05:51 AM Now are you saying that we should use firefox? I use IE and as stated, I view many automobile sites that seem to have been built using the same parameters as this one since visually they have the exact same format. Why don't I have problems with those sites. I shouldn't have to change browsers because this site has problems.
How can I remove the ads using IE?

First off, I would never use IE. It is the most virus prone, outdated browser out there. ;)
I always use Firefox or Safari with no real issues. Firefox has a great free, and easy to use ad blocker that can block it all, and what is not blocked can be clicked on and blocked in the future.
On a side note I tried a different computer at work with no add blockers on, and it is way slower. As soon as I turned on the ad blocker and clicked the ads it wasn't blocking as well it speed up alot. If you want the fastest browsing I would say use an ad blocker and get a membership that blocks them as well on the server end. As for why it might be effecting this one on your end more so it is most likely due to the fact the company that owns this site owns many others and they use the most updated software. Some computers can't handle it, or might not have the correct settings. Plus you have to remember there are alot of sites on the server, and with the ads (that pay the bills) there it will slow it down for sure. Hence why I suggested the above things to do. Like I said, mine was slow. Now it flies....
srobinso11 04-22-2010, 08:33 AM On topic, the ads do make this site slower, but I deal with it and if someone wants to get rid of the ads they should become a premium member...
dpopeck 04-22-2010, 09:13 AM In my initial post, I was curious how many others think the site is slow.
I have considered becoming a premium member, but I'm still on the fence since I'd like to see this forum be more active (more people posting).
If a lot of other people think the site is too slow, maybe that *partially* explains why the forums aren't more active.
Silver LTZ 04-22-2010, 12:38 PM Yes, I agree with that.

Becoming a premium or lifetime member surely helps out, and allows you to lose the ads. It is a win-win situation. The board over the past 6 months has grown ALOT and will continue too as more people buy the cars and find us on Google. ;)

Use a dialup connectin with Opera and find the site fast, but then i use
http://www.admuncher.com/
Works with any browser though.
Silver LTZ 05-19-2010, 06:01 AM There was an update done this morning to the site. Even on the work computer I tested the site on it seems quicker to me. With ad block it moves along really well too.
