: buyer beware
cerbomark 07-05-2008, 07:40 PM I just joined the site here with my new 08 LTZ. But this last week was not a good purchasing experience. I brought the (First) new car home and after three days found out it was hit and repaired in the right rear door, quarter and 1/2 the rear bumper painted. I detail cars part time and have been car crazy like most if you for decades. I live 225 miles from the dealer I bought from cause I moved and have bought 5 cars from this dealer including a Corvette, and two Silverados. So after a few days of over the phone bickering they located another one identical other than a later build date and I made the swap. I told them I d probably contact NJ Consumer Affairs to file a compplaint anyway because of the treatment I got from them. They are looking at a large fine for this violation. You think they would have given me something to go away quiet but they really didn t. My opinon would be to stay away from Paramus Chevy, NJ.
pwinskey 07-05-2008, 08:11 PM How did you find out it was wrecked? Did they own up to it finally? That really is poor on their part and I would complain too if they had prior knowledge.
cerbomark 07-05-2008, 08:14 PM they had to own up. I saw finerprints under the clearcoat. Under certain light i could see the repair area was just not the same as the factory paint. I then took it to a body shop and he showed me everything that was not factory painted. They tried to say they forgot the form to notify me cause of a paperwork error.
pwinskey 07-05-2008, 08:33 PM Well someone would be paying for the gas to and from these shisters and then they would throw in some all weathermats, oil change etc.. Did you threaten to sue them?
pwinskey 07-05-2008, 08:36 PM Oil changes at a dealer closer to you that is!! I would be very, very angry. They did not forget they just hoped someone would be so thrilled to have a new car they would not notice!!
cerbomark 07-06-2008, 06:02 AM just typed a letter to the top guy at the dealership and my next call will be to the NJ Division of Consumers Affairs after I give him a few days to think about it.
bignick 07-06-2008, 09:01 AM if its under $2000 in repairs they don't have to report it.
pwinskey 07-06-2008, 12:02 PM I had no idea! That is really good information to know.
cerbomark 07-06-2008, 07:02 PM if its under $2000 in repairs they don't have to report it.
It s a $1000 in NJ they have to notify you. I already spoke to an investigator.
DOACanada 07-07-2008, 05:04 AM cerbomark - WOW - Sorry to hear about the bad experience. At least you got a brand new car now....Anything else of course is fringe, but damn they should be doing something!
CuriousC 07-07-2008, 10:20 AM Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but what the dealer did to you sounded illegal.

yes, New Jersey Consumer Law requires them to have you sign a disclosure that you were notified of the damage.
DOACanada 07-07-2008, 02:34 PM cerbomark - Are you thinking of persuing legal action if they don't adequately compensate you?
CuriousC 07-07-2008, 02:50 PM yes, New Jersey Consumer Law requires them to have you sign a disclosure that you were notified of the damage.
You should report this dealer to GM, I don't think they will like what this dealer is doing.
FenwickHockey65 07-07-2008, 03:00 PM If you don't like what the dealer did, then give them a bad score on their survey. It goes straight to GM, and anything less than "Completely Satisfied" means that the dealer failed. Consequences against the dealer will result.

If that's the case why does GM still have a good supply of crappy dealers?
cerbomark 07-08-2008, 05:41 AM sent a letter to deaL yesterday to put in writing my dis pleasure with them. Saving the state for next. Don t think there s anything to gain with a lawyer at this point but maybe I ll check.

Must be around your areas...my GM dealers are awesome. Never given any of them a bad survey.

Actually I have yet to visit a GM dealer in my area. When we were shopping for our last vehicle (This was in New York) we checked out a Cadillac dealership (Looking at a SRX) and the sales people didn't even look at us. The last GM vehicle our family owned 30 years ago was a Chevy and they had absolutely terrible customer service. This was a long time ago, but many of the dealers I been to (GM/Non-GM) had really bad customer service.
The best customer service I have seen so far was a Mercury dealer. I just hope when it comes time to buy the Malibu I can find a decent dealer, this is one of my concerns.
lilbug 07-08-2008, 09:43 AM I have to drive 60 miles to get a decent dealership and even then it depends on who you talk to.
FenwickHockey65 07-08-2008, 10:03 AM In my personal experience, it's toyota dealers that are the worst. My mom dragged my father and I to look at a corolla (which we both hated, by the way, so goddamned cheap feeling...), the sales people kept us there until 9:00 PM then called us every day for two weeks afterwards until I got fed up and told them I was getting a Malibu.

Thats very concerning, I have like 5-6 Chevy dealers within 30 miles from me. Hopefully I can find one good dealer. While I am asking is anyone on these forums familiar with Ray Price? That seems to be the biggest dealer in my area, and if anyone has experience with them I would love to hear from you.

My parents owned a Tercel in the 80's and when they tried to buy one the first dealer tried to rip them off. They went to a second dealer and they charged them a much lower price. I know bad dealerships are very common, but IMO I think GM lost many customers over the past few decades due to bad customer service.
They might of had reliability issues with past GM vehicles (Thankfully GM seems to have come around in this area) but if the dealers helped the owners get their vehicles fixed without any issues GM would still have many customers. So I truly hope GM has become very strict with it's dealers.
DOACanada 07-09-2008, 05:11 AM - BACK ON TOPIC -
Cerbomark - Have you heard anything from the dealer?? Any updates you can share???
dsrtdukone 07-09-2008, 09:12 AM I'm curious to hear how this turns out as well. I'm not sure about New Jersey, but MANY state statutes require that dealerships report damage repaired prior to a NEW vehicle sale to the buyer IF that the repair cost 3% (or more) of the MSRP of THAT vehicle (using oem parts and including labor). I would guess that not disclosing this information would constitue fraud of some sort, although I don't know what type of damages you could recover if you persued it. It would be nice to see SOME sort of accountability for the dealerships that think they can get away with this.
cerbomark 07-09-2008, 10:55 AM they probably got my letter today, so if I dont hear from them by the end of the week I may call NJ Consumers Affairs.
mizzouman_2000 07-15-2008, 08:50 AM It's been almost a week... any news?
cerbomark 07-15-2008, 03:24 PM havent heard from dealer, when I get time I ll try and file complaint if they will take it. On the complaint there was a box which asked "How much money did I lose?" They replaced the car so I guess the answer is only several days of my time.
cerbomark 07-15-2008, 03:41 PM OK< you guys just got me hot again and I filed the complaint form online and have to mail all my documents to them.
DOACanada 07-16-2008, 05:04 AM cerbomark - You should be fighting this....what they did is not right at all! Who know how many other people they have taken advantage of that are not as obeservant and smart as you!
cerbomark 07-28-2008, 03:39 PM The state recieved my complaint and informed me they did forward it to my county and that they will contact me.
mizzouman_2000 07-28-2008, 04:38 PM That's great news! Good luck!
DOACanada 07-29-2008, 09:43 AM Little by little, although I am sure it is a painful process....Hopefully something good comes from it.
cerbomark 07-29-2008, 03:00 PM Little by little, although I am sure it is a painful process....Hopefully something good comes from it.
WELL I m lucky that they replaced the car so whatever the state decides to do will probably be between the state and the dealer.
cerbomark 08-21-2008, 06:40 PM UPDATE, I got a call from my son tonight , who is friends with people at the dealership/ they told him that he and I am not welcome in the dealership. They got summons to court today. Guess they tought I was kidding. I assume the state will advise me of the outcome.
pwinskey 08-21-2008, 07:39 PM That's what they get. Too bad they could not be honest to begin with and they would not be going through this now. GM dealerships cannot afford to be stupid with their customers so this should be a lesson to all.
mizzouman_2000 08-22-2008, 05:21 AM Yup, I agree.. the got what they deserve.
CuriousC 08-22-2008, 10:13 AM Congratulations Cerbomark. I hope GM comes down on them also. Such a poor dealership has no right to do what they did to you.
calibu05 09-09-2008, 08:51 AM Did you consider running a carfax before you bought the car. I do it no matter what.
calibu05 09-09-2008, 08:52 AM Did you consider running a carfax before you bought the car. I do it no matter what.
DOACanada 09-09-2008, 11:01 AM cerbomark - I am assuming you would never be going back to that dealer anyways so I guess no great loss to you.
I wonder if there is way for you to follow up with state will advise you of any outcome....I am guessing probably not but it certainly would be nice if you could find some sort of closure.
Also have you thought about sending all your documents to GM for their perusal? Also what did you say on your Dealership survey?
cerbomark 09-09-2008, 04:47 PM i have a call into the state to see if i can find out anything.. i threw the dealer survey out cause i didn t want to punish the salemen, cause i m not sure if he knew but the manager knew for sure. did n t even think about sending it to gm. I also didn t even consider running a car fax on a new car.
thelongone13 09-09-2008, 05:25 PM Yikes! Cerbomark, you handled it well.
DOACanada 09-10-2008, 05:24 AM Hell - I would still complete the dealer survey!!!! Although you are right you didn't want to punish the sales person, having just completed mine....There is a seperate section for the sales person you dealt with, and a seperate section for the dealership it's self.
My suggestion would be to give GM a call and explain the story and let them know you seem to have misplaced your dealership survey and would like a nother one, than complete and at the end it asks if you have any further comments or suggestions. I would than write your situation and attach your supporting documents and send it back to them. At the very least at least GM will know about what is going on.
It is dealerships like this one, that give not only GM but Domestic Manufacturers a bad name.
Just my thoughts and suggestions.
cerbomark 09-10-2008, 02:50 PM Investigator told me he is waiting for paperwork back from the dealer and then they decide what, if any violation s occurred.
DOACanada 09-11-2008, 04:47 AM Thanks for the update, it will be interesting to follow this and see what happens.
cerbomark 10-10-2008, 02:10 PM update/ the state investigator found in my favor and they did not disclose the damage as they should have. He figured they owed my $1477... and that they should sharpen their pencils and write me a check before the state decides their fine , if any. I checked with an atorney and he said that s the best I would get. So per the dealers request I sent them a letter stating I would take no further action and they will send a check out to me for $1500. Waiting at the mailbox!

I am assuming you are happy with the outcome also?
nhance 10-14-2008, 07:51 AM That's very good news! Hope you are happy with your Bu' now.
cerbomark 10-17-2008, 08:34 AM got my $1500 check and sent in dealer review on Edmunds, I was the first one on there reviewing Paramus Chevy, NJ.
