For the last few months, and only about 5 times, when I went to start my 2003 Malibu it would not start. It sounds as if it is going to turn over, but does not start. The fist time I waited a couple of hours and then it started. The second time it would not start I waited 10 mins and it started. The other few times I have realized that if I wiggle the shifter without switching gears it starts.

Anyone know what the cause could be?

Thanks
Luigi

Neutral Safety Switch. Check on the trans where the shift linkage attaches. If the switch is there you may find that it is loose (needs adjusted and tightened down), the terminals are corroded (clean or replace as needed), or the switch contacts are corroded, worn away, or damaged (repair or replace). If the NSS is on the shifter inside the console check for the same conditions.

To get by until you correct it, try placing the trans in N to start. If it doesn't then firmly step on the service brake pedal, turn the key to the start position, and then carefully wiggle the shifter slowly towards D or R. It should start at some point but might be in gear, which is why you're stepping on the brake pedal, but be prepared for it to be in gear right after starting. If pulling it toward D lets it start then you probably just need to adjust it. If it starts after pulling toward R but won't start in P you probably need to replace it, as it's worn beyond any further reliable service.
