: 08 Malibu - Intermittent Starting issue
Ok, I need some help! I've got an '08 Malibu with 33K on it and I've had in the dealership 4 times now for this issue. The first 2 times I came out in the morning to head to work and I got nothing when I tried to start it. Didn't leave anything on or plugged in. When I got home in the afternoon, the car started right up.
The 3rd time it happened, it wouldn't start for 2 days and then all of sudden it started.
This time, I couldn't start it this morning and checked the voltage on the battery 12.5 vdc. Called GM Roadside for a tow truck and had it dropped at the dealership and OF COURSE it started!!! Now both the tow truck driver and I tried to start it before he loaded it up and nothing.
Lights come on, windows work and radio comes on, the car just won't start.
The dealership has checked the battery and electrical system coming up with nothing.
Anybody had this issue?
I'm at a loss, as is the dealership so any help would be greatly appreciated!
Bad switch, relay, loose ground????????
Thanks!
Starship 06-08-2010, 09:49 AM It sounds like they (techs at the dealer) need your help. Next time the problem happens, make a note of various lights and displays on the instrument cluster. If the security light is blinking, e.g., it means something.
Thanks Starship, I'll do that.
ChicagoMalibu2009 06-08-2010, 11:25 AM This happened to a Land Rover I was on a long backpacking trip in (someone elses). What ended up working was disconnectnig the battery overnight. Theory was it would reset the computer/not allow it to remember anything in RAM. and boot from total scratch on startup.
No problems after leaving it off.
Starship 06-08-2010, 03:41 PM Thanks Starship, I'll do that.
You're welcome. There's nothing like intermittent starting to ruin your day. Hope they can fix your problem soon.
ESCAPEMAX 06-08-2010, 03:59 PM No Start as in No Cranking? Could be a busted/Loose Terminal on the starter. I have seen this working at the auto parts store. Need to put on a lift and check the connections.
Not even trying to start. The dealership is escalating the issue now since the car has been in 3 times for the same thing. They are looking at everything from loose wiring to the security system so we'll see what happens.
Thanks for the replies!
Alfisto Steve 06-23-2010, 11:43 AM Well, My wife is stranded in Outer Banks right now with a no start issue on her 2009 LTZ 4 cylinder and it is being towed the Kitty Hawk Chevy dealer.
Does not appear to be a battery issue according to Road side assistance tow truck driver.
Stay tuned.
Fishhunter911 06-23-2010, 01:12 PM Sounds like the ignition switch...GM has had issues with them for the past several years....They will still supply power to most if not all accessories but will not supply power to the starting circuit. Have them pull the switch and if it is bad they will see minor scorching inside the switch.
RaineMan 06-23-2010, 02:41 PM Have you tried it with a different key? The keys have transponders in them and the car won't start unless it gets a signal from the transponder in the key. I know it sounds dumb... but give it a shot.
Yep, had a new key made and also had to get a new remote as it had a broken lead in it.
It's happened twice more to me since I last was on and is at the dealership yet again. Of course, it's starting every time. Last time it would not start, only the yellow engine light was on when the key was turned to the starting position. Now this time though, I hit the "unlock" button on the remote while sitting in the car and then it started... even though the car was already unlocked before I tried to start it.
I took it to the dealer and let them know this and they still haven't found the issue. I've mentioned all of the suggestions received here and they say they are not able to fix it until it does not start while they have it.
I'm pretty frustrated at this point as the car has been in the shop 5 times (the last 2 times for more than a week each time) and it's still not fixed.
I've asked the dealership to escalate this and at this point will have to do the same. I can't not have the use of the car any longer or take it back and worry every where I go if I'll get stranded somewhere..................... Driving my '01 1500 HD (11 mpg) with 216,000 miles on it over 100 miles a day to and from work is killing my wallet!!!! Never had these issues with my trusty 1500HD, but it's getting up there in miles!!
Any update on the problem with the '09 LTZ?
Starship 07-03-2010, 11:46 AM If you are referring to the Alfisto Steve's Malibu, goto http://www.chevymalibuforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4368. They apparently reseated the connectors at the ECM. If it were me, I would've reseated the connectors at the BCM and fuses and relays everywhere as well.

Finally the problem is taken care of!! Found that it was something internal in the battery after the Service Manager and Lead Tech came to my house (Yes came to my house!) to diagnose when it would not start again. Crazy, but I'm glad they were able to find it.
DrivenDaily 08-01-2010, 07:54 AM Wow! That's good news and a great team you've got on your side.
Doug L. 09-26-2010, 11:50 AM Hello,
I have been experiencing the exact same Intermittent Starting issue with a '10 Malibu. It has been to the dealership once already and they couldn't diagnose the problem. They installed a new ignition switch and wiring, but the problem still persists.
The car will currently not start and I will be taking it to the dealership again tomorrow. I was wondering what type of test they performed on the battery Loug as I would offer it as a suggestion.
The first time this occurred and called CAA (AAA equivalent), the driver blamed the battery and said this was very common with the newer models.
