: Clicking Seat Rails on 2009 LS
ChicagoMalibu2009 06-30-2010, 02:59 PM So I've been plagued by a more and more obnoxious(to me) sound when I'm accelerating or turning. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this or has any ideas regarding a fix before I pull everything apart.
When my weight shifts (it seems), the seat shifts forward or back or side to side a very small amount and makes a minor clunking noise. I am noticing it more and more recently now that I'm aware of it, though i don't think its getting worse. It cannot be reproduced at a standstill by shifting my weight. My seat is pushed all the way back.
Any thoughts?
Silver LTZ 06-30-2010, 05:32 PM Mines doing the same thing. But it seems to be the seat back. It seems to make a slight noise, and maybe even move a tad when I move from a complete stop. It almost seems to be the lumbar bladder that is "moving". I am bringing the car in next week for the usual service. I am gonna have them look at this while it is there. It is minor, but getting annoying.
ChicagoMalibu2009 07-01-2010, 07:32 AM Interesting that you have it too... I can't completely rule it out as I haven't addresed it but for me it feels like the bottome left of the seat shifts -- That to me means it couldnt be the lumbar item (isnt that inside the seat back?). There is a heavy metal clunk associated with the shift too, like a clunk as I fall .1 inch and slide about .2inch it feels like.
It doesnt feel like a safety concern, just obnoxious. Its when i turn and accelerate only (slides back when i brake silently maybe?)
It would be great if you note what they might do... I'd rather address myself since I have seat covers and my dealer would blame those without a service bulletin. I also don't want the yoinking them off the seats since they are a tight fit on and off.
RaineMan 07-01-2010, 08:36 AM Mine does that too in certain positions. The noise on mine is coming from the joint that lets the seat back move... if I shift my weight or change the way I am sitting it makes a clicking or popping sound. Annoyed the heck out of me on the 2200mi trip out here from NC. Though now I guess I'm used to it because I haven't thought about it or been bothered by it in a few months.
As with all squeaks and rattles... just turn the radio up.
ChicagoMalibu2009 07-01-2010, 09:11 AM My main concern isn't the noises its the light falling back sensation from a standstill. its an odd sensation that throws me off. I don't think that its something I wont address in the long run as it also annoys the heck out of me in daily driving.
RaineMan 07-01-2010, 12:36 PM For a while there I was afraid the seat back was going to break on me. But after a few months I realized that isn't going to happen, so I try not to let it bother me.
Have you tried readjusting the seat a little? Perhaps you have yours so far back on the rails that there isn't a catch to lock it in, you are just banging the back of the seat rail. Try moving it forward by one position and see if that helps.
ChicagoMalibu2009 07-01-2010, 12:45 PM I thought about it, but I don't imagine it as comfortable or feasible due to height. BUT, I haven't tried it. And maybe one click won't make that big a difference and will address it.
I'll give it a shot.
Silver LTZ 07-01-2010, 04:05 PM I've tried all different positions, doesn't help.
After I get the car back I will advise. I am stopping there tomorrow to make a appointment.
ChicagoMalibu2009 07-06-2010, 12:54 PM I read this and still tried it -- why not right?
But yes Silver is right -- It does not address the issue.
RaineMan 07-06-2010, 01:14 PM Have you checked to see if the rails are bolted securely to the floorpan? I used to take the passenger and rear seats out of the Cobalt for drag racing, if you don't have those bolts torqued down tight it will rattle.
Just a thought.

Yup, mines more in the seat then seat rails. I haven't had time to get to the dealer, hopefully soon.
Silver LTZ 07-23-2010, 11:26 AM UPDATE: Well I finally got around to bringing the car in. The tech agreed something wasn't right, as slight as it was. They ordered a new seat frame. Should be in next week, and I will report back if that did the trick.
ChicagoMalibu2009 07-23-2010, 11:41 AM Thanks for the update, thats awesome. I hope it is something like that. If not, maybe ill go in and one of us can ask for the old frame back or something. I think maybe I could reverse engineer whats up/design a shim or something.
Its minor in both annoyance and probably the fix itself. Probably bending a tab or tightening a screw or .05in. of clearance somewhere.

Well from what he described, at least in my case. The new frame should solve the problem. I should know in about a week.
Silver LTZ 07-28-2010, 06:33 AM Well picked up the car this morning. The seat is perfect. So at least in my case, the seat frame was the issue.
ChicagoMalibu2009 07-28-2010, 08:08 AM OK, awesome. many thanks...
Any mention of a part number or anything on the work invoice? Ill have to go in to my dealer and see if i can have this replaced under warranty for the issue. Its quite noticable!

I'll have to take a look later for you.

I looked at the paperwork. No part number on what I got. It just said "replaced seat frame, issue fixed".
ChicagoMalibu2009 08-03-2010, 08:17 AM Thanks for taking a look. I will probably mention it the next time I go in for something else.
Geeze 08-04-2010, 10:54 AM Ours does the same thing on the drivers side electric seat on our 08. My wife is short and doesn't notice it with the seat further ahead. When I get the seat where I want it it makes the popping noise when I take off from a stop. If I run the seat ahead a couple inches it doesn't do it. Getting really fed up with all of the little quirks in this car. Yesterday we received a letter from GM regarding the electric power steering. They are going to cover it for ten years or 100,000 miles. We will have this car long enought to exceed 100,000 miles. If it goes out at over 100,000 miles and I have to foot the bill this will be the last Chevy for me. Things like this should last the lifetime of the vehicle. We anxiously awaited the newly designed Malibu expecting it to be an exciting, more refined product from GM. Sadly it hasn't lived up to our expectations. If this is the best GM can do we will look elsewhere next time!
By the way like many others have reported we also have a rear door lock that quit working. JUNK!!!
