: Noise/Rattle in Ceiling Canopy
Refbean 07-14-2008, 09:59 AM I have started to noise that I have a noticeable rattle noise coming from the ceiling/canopy of my new LTZ. I have a moon roof and was able to remove the rubber molding and take a peak around. Not too much up there. But there seems to be a magnet that keeps the canopy taunt to the roof. However, the is a large amount of space. I think it may be the materials used in the padding/spacers that are in the ceiling. Has anyone else noticed this. Also..the drivers seat makes alot of noise when I shift positions just slightly. It seems to be related to the power seat mechanism. Any way to lubricate this?
mpoczobut 07-14-2008, 11:11 AM Haven't noticed this issue. My LTZ is so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I do occasionally hear a clunk in the rear-end if I hit a large bump in the road.
2001FZ1 07-14-2008, 11:25 AM I would take your car back to the dealer and have them fix the problem. it will be covered under warranty.
FenwickHockey65 07-14-2008, 02:48 PM Sounds like something might've come loose. Take it to the dealer, they'll know what's going on.

I have an 2LT with a moonroof. I hear what could be described as a rattle in the driver's side B pillar toward the roof. If I press really hard where the plastic meets the headliner, it will go away. Like you said, it seems as though it's just minor contact between the headliner and the body of the car. The good news is that it doesn't happen constantly (or I'm playing my music really loud).
Also, (sorry to hijack), I have a noise at the base of my windshield where it meets with the dash. It seems as though a clip is rattling. Anyone else have that?

Yes. It's intermittent. So I can't replicate it every time for the dealer to fix. I was waiting for a more definitive word before I can point them to the right direction.
FenwickHockey65 07-18-2008, 09:28 AM The windshield rattling is a common problem with Epsilon platform cars. Your dealer SHOULD know what the problem is. I don't remember exactly what was wrong, but my Chevy dealer was able to locate and fix the problem without needing me to replicate the noise.
USA1fan 07-18-2008, 09:56 AM I thought the problem, at least on the last gen (04-07 / 08 Classic) cars was related to the adhesive on the windshield trim not holding it securely enough. The fix was that the dealers applied some new adhesive. I'd have thought the 08+ cars would've either had the design changed or used a different adhesive.
CuriousC 07-18-2008, 05:17 PM If the Epsilon's have this problem why hasn't GM fixed it by now? It's not a big deal, but annoying still.
jbucki 08-20-2008, 02:53 PM Yes - I have a bad rattle in ceiling canopy behind dome light on 08 LTZ with sunroof. Hear it with roof open or closed. Can stop it with pressure on ceiling - but is pretty constant with any bump or vibration - annoying. Sounds like metal plates or tools. Taking it too dealer, but hate when they have to get inside places like ceiling.
mpoczobut 08-21-2008, 05:59 AM What I thought was a noise in the trunk has been diagnosed to be a rattle from the sunroof shade. The claim the noise is travelling down into the trunk. Similar to you, if I close the shade or put my hand on it, then rattle stops. My dealer claims their is no fix but will watch for bulletins. I'll be anxious to know what you find out!
jbucki 09-02-2008, 02:34 PM mp. there is a bulletin on the ceiling rattle. Took mine in today to hopefully be fixed at trim/interior shop. The service guy found the bulletin right away. Had to order some type of tape to us in ceiling. Bulletin described the problem pretty well and had detailed instructions.
mpoczobut 09-03-2008, 05:53 AM I'm anxious to hear if it fixes the problem! Do you happen to know what the TSB number is?
Thanks!
jbucki 09-04-2008, 01:59 PM mp, Well I took it in tuesday and do not have it yet (thur pm). I will get the TSB # for you if I ever get my car back - the bulletin print out is in the car. My interior was seperating on the beam by the drivers side door and windshield also. Jbucki
jbucki 09-04-2008, 02:18 PM just talked with the service manager and he said after doing the ceiling work the seperation on the interior was worse than before and they were going to replace the ceiling headliner. Do they know what they are doing??? I may raise hell if things are not close to perfect. This is a 2 month old car - 2008 LTZ. This problem in the ceiling and on the interior frame should be. This should have been done right at the factory. I had 2 trailblazers and never had this shoddy of work related problems.
mpoczobut 09-05-2008, 06:25 AM That's the one thing I would worry about when bringing my car in... will they make it worse? There are certain things the tech's do everyday, removing headliners is not one of them.
I hope everything works out for you and hope I can get my issue resolved as well!
Good luck!
purplemyst79 09-13-2008, 09:46 AM bulletin # 08-08-59-001 : Squeak Itch Noise from Front Headliner and Upper Roof Panel near Sunshades ( Feb 08) 08 with Sun Roof. - the condition may be caused the lack of insulation on the two front foam support blocks used between the headliner and the roof panel
plgtx 09-14-2008, 08:38 PM Thanks so much for posting the number! The rattling in my headliner is getting on my nerves...I hope this fixes it!
mpoczobut 09-15-2008, 10:18 AM Yes thank you so much! It has been getting on my nerves. It is less noticeable if I close the sunroof shade, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a sunroof! I can't wait to get his fixed!
mpoczobut 09-15-2008, 01:35 PM jbucki, did this fix your problem? I just spoke to my service department; they don't believe this bulletin covers my issue. My problem is definitely a rattle or clunk that sounds like it is coming from the trunk, but if I close the sun roof shade the noise appears to go away.

Do you have a LTZ with the rear power option? there is also a bulletin on it where a cable is loose and hits something. I won't be able to look that up until later this week, but I remember reading it and thinking thatI should watch for it since I have that option on mine. The fix is to add felt on a certain component.
mpoczobut 09-16-2008, 06:01 AM yes I do, but I believe they already fixed that. I believe it was to add insulation or felt to the back of the power converter that is mounted in the trunk above the left wheel-well. I would appreciate you confirming this when you have a moment!
Thanks!
jbucki 09-16-2008, 09:29 AM Okay here is the update on my ceiling noise with my best opinions as to what is going on.
1. The bulletin mentioned above is the same one the service dept. gave me - but my noise was in the rear behind the dome light. Sounded like trunk or back seat, but was rear ceiling. Bulletin talked like it was front by the sun shades.
2. The service dept. sent it to a reputable interior trim shop, but the tech did not know where the problem was because they only sent the bulletin (I defintely should have talked to the trim shop tech myself - showed him the area of noise).
3. I also had some seperation on the drivers side beam - which was worse after the tech took off the ceiling - so the service dept decided I needed a new canopy - which they ordered and the trim shop put on. I found this out when I called the dealer wondering what was going on with my car. No one called me.
4. Almost two weeks later I called the dealer and they said "they thought the car was finished." I went out sat and it looked okay, and the noise was better, but still some there. Seems to be worse with sunroof open - quieter with it closed. Before was very noisey all the time.
5. I talked to the trim tech and he said he could see where that rear noise was coming from and tried to insulate the metal bar in the ceiling, but was difficult due to the roof track. I will keep an ear on it and take it back to him if it gets worse or becomes to annoying.
6.Major communication problem from dealer to trim shop and dealer to me. One other note - 10 in quarters in the console - cleaned out when I picked up the car. Nice way to sell you dealership!!!!!!! And I just heard from a dealer customer service rep who said he hoped I would check off all the positives on the GM survey????
nhance 09-16-2008, 01:16 PM That's good info! It makes me think twice about getting a sunroof put on my Bu'.
mpoczobut 10-30-2008, 09:27 AM The dealer fixed my noise/rattle in the Ceiling Canopy yesterday!!
I told them it appeared as though there were some bumpers missing, as the sunshade went further into the cavity then a brand new LTZ on the lot that I test drove because of the vibration problem I have. They took the headliner down and also ordered a new sunshade for good measure. While putting it back together they noticed that the bumpers were placed too far back. They moved them forward, installed the new sunshade and the rattle is gone! It's a wonderful thing! The dealer did a great job putting it back together, I can't tell that they ever took the ceiling canopy down!! :D
There is no TSB at this time...

If enough of us have the issue, there probably will eventually be a TSB. Mine started rattling this past week. The sound seemed like it was coming from the passenger side somewhere (maybe back door). And since I'm usually the only one riding in the car, that's where I figured the noise was. My wife was with me yesterday, and isolated it to the roof. My sunshade was closed, but she opened it, then reclosed it, and BAM, sound gone!?
If it comes back I'll be mentioning it next month when I take the car back for it's oil change. They're already replacing the sill plates, because mine are bubbling up where the adhesive evidently dried out.
Oh, and by way of comparison, when I had the car in the shop earlier this month for a tire rotation and balancing, I tried out a G8 GT. The car was roomier, and the seats were somehow a bit more comfortable than the Malibu. Not to mention that, predictably, it was more powerful, though surprisingly quiet and understated unless you put your foot in it. The steering also has something that I miss- a lack of engine feel (torque?) that nearly every front driver gets, even the best of 'em. This made the general driving experience a bit nicer. However, the interior overall is much better in the Malibu, enough so that for my day-to-day use, if I were buying today, I'd have a hard time choosing.

This is exactly what started on my car a couple of weeks ago. I bought a silverstone lt1 with the sun roof in July and now I have this same issue and it's pretty annoying. I'm hoping when I bring it to the dealer they do it right and less than a week.

Have your dealer look up the following service bulletin. It lists 2 potential problems that can cause a squeak/itch at or near the sunroof area. Either at the B-pillar or closer to the sunroof. Both are minor fixes. I'm guessing yours might be the first issue with a metal tab rubbing against another part.
#PIC5001A: Squeak / Creak / Itch And Or Rattle Noise From Sunroof Area (CF5) - keywords b b-pillar body bow bump driving pillar roof sun tab toy - (Oct 20, 2008)

jbucki 11-25-2008, 01:43 PM Thanks Purplemyst79 - I think this bulletin is related to my noise/rattle problem. Taking my LTZ back in the next couple of weeks to see if they can fix it this time. It has been getting worse - roof closed is worse and with cold/wet weather notice it more - so i decided to try to stop it as I had a few road trips planned - so I took my putter and place it in the middle of the back seat and wedged the handle against the roof behind the dome light where the noise was and that HAS DONE THE TRICK. No noise. Not much distraction with rear view - just a problem when I went golfing and discovered my putter was not in the bag!!

Hello, we have a '08 LTZ that had a metal rattle in the roof area also. The sound bounced around the cab, sometimes sounding like it was right above the driver. The dealer replaced the entire sunroof (2 weeks waiting for the part) but that did not solve the problem. They then disassembled the roof liner again and found two pieces of metal rubbing against each other in the "C" pillar to roof area.
Their fix has held for the 5,000 miles we have put on the car.
Recently we had two new rattles start. The first above the passenger which can be stopped by pushing up on the headliner where it transitions from the "B" pillar to the roof.
The second sound like it is coming from the dash area and seems to happen when the cruise is on and the car accelerates.
The rattles have been to only disappointment in the new Malibu.
Also, our driver seat made an annoying squeaking noise every time I moved. In my case it was the seatbelt (female side) rubbing against the leather seat. I solved it by sticking some Velcro (the soft side) on the hard plastic seal belt receiver where it contacted the leather.
jbucki 12-23-2008, 01:58 PM Took my 08 LTZ back again to get ceiling/canopy noise behind the dome light fixed and so far so good. Looks like the service bulletin PIC5001A is the answer. Thanks purplemyst and all who had advice. If any have this problem - make sure you talk to tech doing the work and show them the location of the noise/problem so there is no miscommunication. Thanks.
