: New Member / New 09 Malibu LS
onecrazyfoo4u 07-09-2010, 04:15 PM Just picked up an 09 LS, in Gray with 30k on it. Car is flawless and I love it so far! It was actually a prior rental car, which I'm not too worried about, I would rather prefer a rental over some kid/old person that doesn't perform routine maintanence on it.
The only thing is the car didn't come with the keyless entry remote, wasn't that a standard feature for 09 Malibu's? Where would I get a key fob for the car? I've seen them on ebay for 06, and 08's, but no 09's... are they the same key fob? How do I even know if this car will work with a keyless entry?
I'd rather buy a $20 remote then have to get an after market alarm installed for several hundred bucks...for now at least. Look forward to searching the forums here, thanks!
elcompaLalo 07-09-2010, 07:05 PM Welcome to the forum! Check in the glove box for the sticker that has all the RPO codes on it, AP8 is what you should be looking for. If it is in there you can simply purchase the remote and get it programed at the stealership.
Silver LTZ 07-10-2010, 08:21 AM Welcome to CMF.
RaineMan 07-10-2010, 01:45 PM If you pull the VIN you can run it and see all installed options. That's one of the joys of buying a prior rental... a lot of them are no-option strippers, you may pay less... but you don't get all the creature comforts. Good luck!
onecrazyfoo4u 07-12-2010, 07:29 AM So do you really have to go to the dealership to get it programmed, or is there a procedure to do it yourself at home? You would think there would be a way to diy. How much does the dealership charge to program the remotes? Thanks for the help all!
RaineMan 07-12-2010, 08:42 AM AFIAK the dealership has to do it. It's not quite as simple as programming a garage door opener.
onecrazyfoo4u 07-12-2010, 11:03 AM So my glovebox sticker had AP8 listed, so it did have the installed option, dealer just didn't have the remote. Does this mean I can buy the remote online then just take it in for the dealer to program it (Or do I have to purchase a remote at the dealer)? How much do they charge to program it?
onecrazyfoo4u 07-12-2010, 11:18 AM If I can purchase one online, it looks like part # 15252034 is the correct remote, right?
And it should look like this correct: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-2008-2009-CHEVY-MALIBU-KEYLESS-ENTRY-REMOTE-NEW-/400128902965?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d298a8735
I didn't have code AP3 on the glovebox (remote start), so there's no point in getting a remote with the remote start button is there? Thanks again.
RaineMan 07-12-2010, 11:28 AM Correct, if you don't have remote start and aren't going to pay to have it installed there is no point in buying a key fob with remote start on it.
elcompaLalo 07-12-2010, 11:41 AM Whatever you do, if you want remote start you must purchase the kit from your dealer. The kit includes the fobs, module, and the "special code" used to re-program the car to enable the new feature.
onecrazyfoo4u 07-12-2010, 11:43 AM Sweet, thanks, I'm buying the remote now. Hopefully the dealer doesn't charge a ridiculous amount to program it!
One other question, my trunk has theose little netting organizer knobs everywhere, I think like 8-10 of them total, but I don't have the net. Where could I order the net or some other type of trunk organizer at the would fit perfect? Thanks a million.

Cool thanks, I probably won't though since it's several hundred bucks. That and it doesn't really get too cold in the winter here in the desert. And it's probably worthless in the summer, since A/C isn't that cold when your sitting still!

onecrazyfoo4u 07-12-2010, 01:03 PM That's what I was looking for, thanks!
Dealership said they would charge $50 to re-program a remote, ouch! Maybe I'll have to look in to the remote start kit afterall...

That will be around $300 installed.
onecrazyfoo4u 07-12-2010, 03:15 PM Yeah, kind of pricey. I just don't think I'd use the remote start that often to justify it though...
DrivenDaily 07-12-2010, 05:24 PM One added benefit of getting the remote start instead of just keyless entry is that it uses a different frequency that has a greater range. I can start or lock/unlock mine from about 200 feet away. With only the keyless entry feature they advertise that it's closer to 40 feet.

That is true, and why I never used mine for the most part.

Really? You're in what... Nevada? I use my remote start like every day... cool the car down from that intense afternoon sun, and it's especially nice to warm things up in the winter when it is snowy.
I never really thought about it before I had the Malibu... but now that I have it I'd be sad without it.
onecrazyfoo4u 07-14-2010, 12:02 PM I'm in california desert. But when your sitting still with the A/c full blast, it doesn't really cool it off. It'll be circulating air, but I think it's pretty darn hot still when sitting still with A/C going. But it's nice an chilly when you're moving!
We get up to 115 deg. in the summer, and that's pretty brutal on the cars.
RaineMan 07-15-2010, 07:44 AM Agreed... the A/C in these cars is not the greatest. I think it is b/c the vents are too small and the dashboard is too big. I use sunshades in mine, and when it gets up into the mid 90's here in the valley the dashboard is so hot in the afternoons that I can't put my hand on it. It just radiates heat into the car. GM really should have made it some color other than black. If it wasn't so hot the car would cool down much faster.

That's odd, I live in Florida, and it gets hot all hell down here in the summer. Sometimes the A/C in my car is so cold I have to turn it way down. I never need to keep the fan past halfway for more then a few minutes.
onecrazyfoo4u 07-15-2010, 09:41 AM Yeah, I think the A/C is super cold when you're moving down the road, even when 115 outside. Just sitting still after startup it isn't the greatest. I learned after my last car to NOT get leather or black interior again. I have the gray interior, and love it, way cooler than my last black leather interior!
They should make an interior temp gauge, I bet it would easily be 130 in there after work, sitting in the sun all day!
RaineMan 07-15-2010, 11:43 AM Well, coming from NC to UT I can tell you the sun is very different here. The humidity is what really gets you down south. Here the air is dry but the sun beats down like a furnace. Perhaps my sensitivity to cold is different from the rest of you. If I have one of the vents pointed straight at me the air gets annoying, but if I have the vents blowing just trying to cool the car off I have to run the fan on setting 3 the whole time just to keep the car cooled down. In the afternoons I can feel the heat coming off the dashboard like it is an oven.
Silver, perhaps your 2-tone interior makes a difference. Mine is all black.

I lived in Medford, OR, and Marysville, CA, before moving here. Both areas are hot and dry in the summer. Here it's very humid this time of year. Out West the AC doesn't have as much moisture to remove so it can concentrate more on cooling the air instead of dehumidifying it. When I was there the AC would only have to blow on medium or low to cool me, or, like you, at a higher speed but directed away from me.
Out here it has to blow on me for quite a while to keep me comfortable. If I direct it away from me too early in the drive then I start getting warm again, even though the car is bein cooled down. All that extra moisture seems to hold the heat much longer and takes more time to cool off.
Oh, and my interior is black on black. I wish it was two-tone, too.

onecrazyfoo4u 07-22-2010, 09:58 AM Thank you much. Couple of random questions I have:
Will a cargo net out of an 07 Malibu Maxx fit just like the 09 cargo nets? I just ask cause I can get one for a lot cheaper than the 09 ones ($45 + tax).
Also, what is the preferred oil filter? I was thinking about either AC Delco or Wix oil filters.
What is the preferred brand of spark plug? Looking at AC Delco plugs once again. Thanks!
onecrazyfoo4u 07-24-2010, 01:11 PM Anybody know?
Silver LTZ 07-24-2010, 03:45 PM Anybody know?
Doubt it, the cars are very different.

I've been using AC Delco parts forever. With ECOTEC, they now seem to be changing suppliers (to lower bidders) and thus I'll reevaluate once my current stash runs out. On the spark plugs, I see no point in replacing the Iridium plugs before their time and thus I'll reevaluate when the time comes as well.
