: anyone receive a letter from GM about the elec power steering?
nutcrunch 08-13-2010, 10:38 AM I just got a letter in the mail from GM saying that our 2006 Malibu will have a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on the electric power steering.
Here's a copy of the first 2 pages...

Anyone else get this in the mail? I'm curious if it covers other years too.
Silver LTZ 08-13-2010, 11:04 AM Alot of the 2008-up owners did too. Myself included, even though I have a 3.6 that doesn't even have electric power steering. Can't imagine why GM loses money.
nutcrunch 08-13-2010, 11:11 AM haha maybe you can get a free electrical steering column from them anyways.
Do you have a link to the thread where they are talking about the letter for the 08s?
nutcrunch 08-13-2010, 11:29 AM I just talked to my step daughter who has an 05 Malibu and she received the letter too.
She had the symptoms in the letter one time last year but it disappeared and never happened again. I think she is over 100,000 miles though.
rego4800 08-13-2010, 03:25 PM YEP. for my 2008 new body style. I guess I was "LUCKY" enough for it to break the first year I had it so its already been replaced under warranty.
nutcrunch 08-13-2010, 06:16 PM We've got about 46,000 miles on the 2006 Malibu and so far no sign of problems with the steering. Watch us have some now...
misterhyde 08-19-2010, 07:09 PM I got the letter last week (8/11 or 8/12 I think). Called dealer evening of 8/12 and schedule for them to keep it that weekend.
I am a lead foot with the 'bu (2006 V6 LT), so have had the problem with steering assist giving out. Happens on flat or declined road when the RPM's get high around 6k. Was going to perform the TSB myself (replace coil pack and add new ground strap) as I figured it would be less than $100 parts. Then the letter, and yah!
They called the same day I dropped it off (8/13) saying it was done. I was out of town so picked it up Mon. 8/16. Drove it home with tight left steering, and loose left steering. Called and took it back in. 1/2 hour later, it was done. guy said they had to call GM Tech Assistance and found out they have to reprogram power steering sometimes. Works like a charm, and somehow it seems like I've got a lil' more power than normal :)
Also, the knocking from my Intermediate Steering Shaft is gone????!!!!!! Couldn't be happier, but just waiting for the knock to come back. I assume they just lubed it up again?
Found out they put in a whole new steering column for this recall.
My car has about 72k on it.
Answer069 08-20-2010, 12:21 AM Got my letter in the mail today. I haven't had any problems with the Elec Power Steering and I drive the piss out of my car.
btexpress 08-20-2010, 10:15 AM I have a 2004 Maxx and they had to replace the column in it in 2008.
They said it was out of warranty at first until I went ballistic, then they warrantied it.
Has any one with a 2004 got a letter. I am thinking that the one in my car now is the same as the ones they a referring to because of when it was replaced. The car only has 34,000 on it now and had 12,000 on it when it was replaced.

jhMalibu 08-20-2010, 11:14 AM I have two of those letters. Haven't had a failure yet.
I have to spray SuperLube on the ISS every 6 months when the clunking comes back. Quiets it down for a while.
nutcrunch 08-20-2010, 09:06 PM ISS?
I guess we've been very lucky with no steering or noise problems. Well we did have the windshield cowel noise problem but that was fixed using the tech bulletin instructions.

Intermediate Steering Shaft. Its the multi joint portion of the steering. Its between the rack n pinion and the steering column. Bad bushing/no bushing, when it dries up, it start to cluck when you turn the wheel. TSB says to replace with newly redesigned ISS. About $100 from Dealer or gmpartdirect.com.

They have a fix now? I did not know that...
I find that a shot of lube where the column penetrates the cabin will quiet it down for a couple months and then it returns. Takes me a couple minutes to buy some peace and quiet.
Thanks misterhyde, I'll check that out.
misterhyde 08-23-2010, 05:29 AM To all who received the letter. All you have to do is say you have had the power steering loss when the rpm's are high, and they will replace the steering column. I swear I gained engine power somehow with the replacement.
Just put a couple hundred miles on it and the ISS is still not making any noise, but time will tell.
uni1999 08-23-2010, 12:11 PM This happened to me with my 2006 G6, out of warranty but still well under 100K. Can I be re-imbursed for what I paid to have it fixed, event though I now have my Malibu and no longer own the Pontiac?
The dealer I took it to is no longer in business.
misterhyde 08-23-2010, 09:08 PM worth calling GM about. If you had it done at a dealership AND you received a letter stating that specific car is on the recall, I don't see why they would not reimburse you. Might have to have the receipt as well.

If they decide to pay him back he wouldn't need a receipt. It would be in the database.
uni1999 08-24-2010, 08:08 AM Does anyone know if the G6 is included in this? It should be, it's the same system.

Tried looking at this last night. Do I need to pull back the little black bootie to access the joint/ knuckle?
jhMalibu 10-07-2010, 07:46 AM I never do. I don't know if would be better to pull back the bootie, but I just shoot some synco super lube from the spray can in where the shaft enters. The synco stuff is supposed to be the same as "GM superlube". Spray can is nice because in comes out as a liquid, but then sets up as a grease.
