I am tired of hearing about the economy. People act like it is the end of the world but IMO people need to stop spending money the don't have. If you make 100,000 a year doesn't mean you need to go out and spend 200,000.

In my opinion people need to worry a lot less about their belongings and be satisfied with things they can afford and pay off. Don't get me wrong, I love to have nice stuff but when I am married I would much rather be happy in a NORMAL house, with NORMAL cars. And be able to say that I OWN them. Not that I will be paying on it for the next 10 years.

Just my opinion, not trying to be rude. It just seems like now people are more and more worried about who they appear to be, not who they really are.

Anyway, what made you retire from the Navy?

just recently got hired as an assistant manager for walgreens....been with the company a little over 3 years now. not my ideal job as i majored in accounting (graduated in may with a bachelors) but there is just no work to be had where im at. i had job offers that were only going to pay what i made as a service clerk with walgreens (BS!!) im considering going back to school to become a teacher (would love to teach either accounting or geology) that way i could have the same schedule as my wife who is still in school to become a teacher

and im going to agree about the whole economy thing being discussed earlier that way too many people live beyond their means! my wife and i dont make a whole lot of money but we dont have a whole lot of stuff either. simple things like not going out to eat but maybe once a month help....and we do not have cable and have basic att internet as we are saving about 50 a month alone that way. we do netflix and love it! the only things we are working to pay off are the malibu we just bought recently, our house of course, student loans, and our lowes card which weve used to make improvements to our house such as insulation, more efficient windows, etc. things that will pay off both now and in the future.

jobs are hard to come by anymore, but people can live on lower incomes if they really wanted to at least until the economy does turn around and more jobs become available at perhaps higher wages as well.

well the first 2 days were really kinda boring we were mostly just moving equipment from an old shop to our new shop and getting everything all set up. We only have 4 lifts and an alignment lift so we are starting pretty small but today I did 2 oil changes and helped the other tech with a tune up. It has been pretty uneventful so far just learning the new processes of a dealership is the challenge now. For at least the first month we are going to be paid hourly then we will see how flat rate might go. Luckily this building used to be a Ford Dealership in the 80's so it actually had a working in floor exhaust ventilation system but we only have 5 hook ups. Mostly just still getting things figured out but having fun so far.

As of next week I will have been retired for one year, well semi retired since I went back to work part time. I worked for the countries largest grocery retailer for 37 years, performing too many different jobs to list. Two months after I retired my manager called and wanted to know if I wanted to work again, so I said what the hell. Now I am a scan coordinator (three days a week) which means I try and make sure everything scans the right price. With 5000-7000 price changes a week it should be pretty steady work.

I am a professor at a community college. The subjects I teach are basic composition, literature and creative writing.

One of the skills I teach in basic composition is argumentation. I go over how to construct a formal academic argument. I always start with a very simple example, by posing the issue of "What car should we buy?" Then, I give the students three arguments: (1) We should buy the Hyundai because it is economical; (2) We should buy the Volvo because it is safe; (3) We should buy the Ford because it is red.

These arguments always stimulate a lot of debate, especially the last one. We talk about what makes a sound reason for an argument. The last example (Ford car) is meant to show an argument that is weak (after all, we can get safe, inexpensive cars that are red, so why make color a priority?). However, on a car forum, the color of the car might very well be the most important factor for some people! Who knows?

DrivenDaily
06-07-2011, 02:34 AM
Wow, it is so refreshing to see properly constructed sentences with capitalization, punctuation, and grammar!

As an aside, I traded my '09 Black Granite Metallic for my '11 Red Jewel Tintcoat, and color was a leading factor in making the switch. But since I was moving to the same model many of the preceding arguments became moot. It was simply a matter of deciding if I wanted to pay a little more for a little longer to get it. The reason driving me to consider it, though, was the selling dealer of the '09. They told me to leave the dealership after I complained every time they broke my car or left it filthy. So I figured I had one simple choice: Start over with a truly new car instead of an out-of-state dealer trade with 1252 miles on it and scratches discovered after the sale. The result was a color I love to see when it's sunny, an interior that is much more to my liking, and no miles or damage.

I'm sure you can agree that in the sun, with it bouncing off the car at a low angle, the color is just astounding.

I work for one of the best medical facilities in the world, Mayo Clinic. I do also have my Accounting and Business Degrees.

Asking someone who has been there, how tough was intermediate accounting 1 and 2? I heard they are the toughest! I am considering accounting but before I get into it I would like to have some input on the difficulty.
Thanks

At the age of 18 I stay busy as a hourly manager at McDonalds and a full time college student, either an accounting or marketing major.

At most universities, Intermediate Accounting I and II are their "weed out" courses. You may start the semester with around 40 students and have 25 or less complete the course.

I teach these courses from time to time. The issue I see is that students simply are not either willing or able to spend the many required hours reading the material and doing the practice problems. There is no shortcut.

My first class period of the semester includes a portion on this subject. I tell the students if they think they can get by without fully reading each chapter and doing all of the homework at least once (preferably repeating some problems), then they should drop the class that night - while they can still get a complete refund. A few do.

Many come back later in the semester and acknowledge they have not been doing all of the requirements. All I can say to them at that point is that I told them on the first day I was dead serious about the requirements. There is no mistaking that they were told up front what to expect, plain and simple.

How did you do in Principles of Accounting?

As far as my own taking of those courses as a student, I liked them a lot. It depends on the particular instructor you have also. I had studied really hard for Principles of Accounting 1 & 2 in the summer immediately preceding Intermediate I, so the subject was fresh in my mind and I had a very good introduction to start from.

I actually live in Parma, a 10 minute drive south of Cleveland. I work in Solon, which should be a 15 min drive from my house. With the daily traffic jams that I sit through on 480, it's more like 45 min - 1 hr.

I took three accounting classes as part of my business major requirements. Made A's in all of them. I had good teachers though. I did the homework, but never read the book or really listened in class. The homework was enough for me to learn it.

HMM Jeez where to start.

Well I'm 23 yrs old a decorated US Marine, got out may of 2010, started working at 6 Flags America in the DC Area, within a few weeks I was promoted to a managers position, worked there for a few more months and then became violently ill. FIRED because I missed work while in the hospital. Better Business Bureau had a field day with that. So I became healthy and started working as a Security Supervisor at that same Hospital, 4 months later after achieving multiple accomplishments and recognitions from the Hospital President, I was randomly called down to HR where my Security Director "let me go" because I was to motivated and "looked for work " it was making the other Security Officers look bad. I quote "it is easier to let you go than to let go of my entire team" yea BBB had a field day with them too. So currently I am unemployed, and spending everyday with my 2 year old ( which might i add i missed the entirety of her first year, because i was still in the Corps) and I am enjoying every minute of it. All the while in the processing for multiple Police Agencies, and Corrections positions. Maybe one day I'll be hired and used to my capabilities. Thats what i do for a living, thanks for letting me vent/rant................Oh and scouring the internet trying for ways to upgrade my 'Bu.

I'm 19 years old, and I am a Certified Property Restoration Specialist Technician.

I basically deal with Fire, Water, Wind and Mould claims. Whether it be dealing with soot/fire damaged content, sewage/clean water drenched content, wind beaten up houses, or mould contaminated scenerios, I can deal with it all ;)

It's good fun, however it gets tedious, and it is just a "for the moment" type job.

I am looking into either pursueing Electrical Engineering type stuff, or Professional Video Editing :D

Property Manager for residential and commercial rental properties. It's not a permanent gig, I'm looking for better opportunities elsewhere, I'm not too happy with my current pay rate, but hey, it pays the bills.

I also run a blog with a friend, we do unbiased reviews of firearms and firearm accessories. That's not income though, that's just a hobby of ours.

O.k. I guess it's my turn

I am 43yrs old (just turned last Sunday). I am currently a maintenance technician / service rep for a 332 unit apartment community. I've been working here since August 2011. It's a pain, but good money.

For the 10 years before this job I worked as a maintenance technician for a substance abuse rehab facility. I've been in a supervisory position but stepped down due to stress problems. It was a fun job and I do miss the place, but I had to do something better for my family and I.

Every job I have had I've been in a supervisory position. I refuse to take it at my current job. Too much hassle.

What I wish I was doing? I have all the business plans, licenses, insurance, everything, to have my own car aftermarket shop. This would deal with anything, electrical, that you could be in or on a vehicle. I ran out of funds so I couldn't get a brick and mortar storefront to actually start. It will happen one day, hopefully, but I'm not really pushing it too hard.

I do installs and such for people. I design enclosures (free service) for people that request them. I am also a sales rep for Florida and Georgia of GPI subwoofers.

Let's see, is there anything else? Well, I guess I can say I build and troubleshoot computer systems for people. I don't do it too often cause I don't like always getting called to come fix a problem that a person has created themselves.

That's about it. I gotta go to work now.

I already did this once, but I have since then been promoted. Woot woot! So, I figured I would give it another go. :) 25 years old. Counter Sales at a local auto parts store here in Traverse City MI. Worked my way up from Delivery Driver to the Counter in 3yrs. Pretty awesome!

Don't give up on the police depts. Being an "ex-Marine" (I know, no such thing as an ex-Marine) puts you ahead of a lot of other people applying. If you're not accepted on the first try, re-apply as soon as you're allowed. We're always in need of good cops. :)

A bit of an update of what I do now. I used to work part time two jobs and be a full time student. I now am a full time student (graduating in December of this year :D) and work almost full time as an IT Analyst for a local company. I am intern there now, but pretty sure they'll offer me a full time job there when I graduate.

MPKADvldg - I hate to hear all the trouble that they put you through, gotta respect our armed forces. Keep trying with the Police Departments, being a Marine should put you ahead of the field.
I was in school for Criminal Justice and got on with my Department, I've been a Police Officer for a little over a year now, but however... in my graduating class there were 5 Marines in it, 2 out of the Navy, 2 Army Rangers and 1 out of the Air Force, i do believe military experience gives you a little pull
