: New Car Smell
I miss the new car smell that my car once had. Does anyone know how to get that smell back in the car?
There must be a way because I bought my car used and it still had that smell even after 36k miles on it.
Any tips?
BlinkQS 11-03-2010, 02:41 PM I too would like to know how to get that "New Car Smell" back into my car. I also have sat in used cars at the dealerships that had thousands of miles on them, and yes, they still had a new smell to them. The personnel at the dealership who were specialists at detailing cars weren't helpful in telling me what they use (they couldn't understand my English).
Ways that I have avoided letting the new car smell escape were:
Not going through the White Castle drive-thru (or any drive-thru for that matter)
Not getting my interior wet.
Not bringing my dog with me for a ride.
Vaccumming often, and not leaving garbage in the cabin.
Not passing gas.
After all that trouble, my car doesn't smell new anyway anymore.
And I wouldn't use the Evergreen Tree Air Freshners labled "New Car Smell"... cuz its just not the same (they smell bad IMO).

My trick is to always roll up the windows and sunroof when the car's parked. I do park in the shade, use a front window shade, etc. so the interior doesn't become an oven.
My car is ~16 months old w/14,000 miles and when people get in my car they comment on the new car smell.
But then again, I'm anal with my cars. When I traded in my 2003 Malibu last year with ~50K miles, the dealer couldn't believe how spotless the seats/carpet were. And then I told him I have 3 boys (but no pets).

LOL! I like those tips.
Silver LTZ 11-03-2010, 06:01 PM The "new car smell" is the combination of a mix of new materials. It usually only lasts a few thousand miles, and it can not really be copied.
savatage 11-04-2010, 10:20 AM Most people love the smell, but supposedly it is toxic to inhale.
Regardless, whoever can figure out how to bottle it would make a fortune. I would be first in line to buy it.
Malo83 11-04-2010, 12:04 PM M40 is about as close as you'll get to that new car smell, plus it keeps your interior looking it's best :D

Can you put that on the pleather seats that our malibus have? How shiny is the stuff after you put it on?
thanks

Could always just use it only on the dash areas.

Or just spray it on the underside of the seats, which have exposed foam if it really is just for the smell.
To eat up odors, I use a different Meguiar's product that is newer, The "Car Odor eliminator" but the reformulation. The first one was kinda funky, but this has a sandalwood aroma at first then turns out pretty nicely. For now to tell the difference look for sandalwood and a little "New!" yellow spot on the corner of the label.
I agree, the true new smell is difficult to replicate so i just go for not much odor overall (plainish) for better or worse.
Silver LTZ 11-05-2010, 07:03 PM I just HATE the stuff that makes it all shiny. IMO makes it look cheap.
uni1999 04-13-2011, 07:42 AM OK, so I messed up. With 13K miles, I wanted to try to freshen up the new car smell. My car still smelled good, but I wanted it to smell completely new again after my usual spring cleaning. Unfortunately I bought a can of "new car smell" from the auto parts store and sprayed it liberally on the carpet and mats. Now my interior smells like second-hand clothes at a Goodwill store. Help! What should I do to get rid of the smell. Hopefully it hasn't soaked in too much? Just vacuum and air it out? Should i scrub the carpet with some carpet cleaner, or will that make it worse? Take it in and have it shampooed?
I know I shouldn't have sprayed that cheap crap without testing it, just looking for help to fix my mistake. Thanks!

I would still recommend a few applications of the product I mentioned above. It's a light sandalwood smell and has the odor "eating" properties. I have had good luck with it for a while now. It settles down pretty quick and i find it pleasant.
However, with smells everyone has their own opinion so YMMV
The problem with the Malibu's (at least Cloth) interior, is it smells like cheap hell to me. That's one of my biggest complaints about this car. The interior is comfortable and supple in quite a few respects, but some of the super cheap plastics and such just kill the smell. It has that "Chevy Rental Car Smell" to me.
bullitt4204 04-14-2011, 07:41 AM Buy a couple of new baseball gloves and stick one under each front seat. That should do the trick! May have to replace them every year :p
i was told once that the new car smell came from the factory parts having mold on them, i'm not exactly sure about that. but building new machines with cabs here at work, smell like new cars. with all the new vinyl seats and plastic parts. so i don't think it's mold.
i have cleaned other cars that i have had with armorall, careful not to get any on clear plastic parts, since it eats through the surface finish, and brings back some of the smell.

uni1999 04-14-2011, 09:13 AM I got rid of the bad smell from the cheap new car smell spray by cleaning my carpets with Resolve foaming carpet cleaner, a sponge, brush, and shop vac. It does smell a little like Resolve, but that is far more pleasant and my experience is that that smell will go away fairly soon.
I have some Maguire's detailer that I used as well. I'm giving up on the new car smell, I'd rather it just smell clean and fresh. I do like the baseball glove idea though!
2011Malibu2LT 04-17-2011, 04:31 PM LOL!!! Don't pass gas if you want to keep that new car smell around! Sad but true, that will kill that new car smell in a hurry! :)
john2plus8 04-19-2011, 04:55 PM the smell of fiber?
