I'm looking at putting a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires on my stock wheels mainly because they rate so well at Tire Rack and my brother has a set on his Cobalt and really likes them. The OEM tire size is 215/60 R16. Continental does not make them in that exact size. They do make 225/55 and 215/55. Will I notice much of a difference with either size vs. the OEM tire?
Thanks!

The OEM tire has a 215mm tread and 215 * .6 or 129mm (5.08") sidewall. So, the total diameter for speedometer purposes is (215 * .6) / 25.4 * 2 + 16 = 26.2" or so. By the same token, 225/55 is (225 * .55) / 25.4 * 2 + 16 = 25.7" (~2% of OEM). The 215/55 is pretty far off as (215 * .55) / 25.4 * 2 + 16 = 25.3" (~4% of EOM). Go any thinner and the width of the rim may be too wide.

go with the 225/55 the overall diameter is really close to your factory size. those dws tires are great tires but do have weak sidewalls and are prone to impact breaks ( bubbles in side walls)

There are a lot of really great tires in the OE size if you want to stick with it. What are you looking for in a tire; life, comfort, quietness? Are you planning to use the tire year round?

They need to have long life, quiet and be an all season tire. Grand Touring Tires are what I have been mainly looking at.

I would take a close look at the Hankook H727. Here's the link with more details...
