Am I correct in thinking, that the 3.5 L High Value LZ4 V6 was available in the Malibu in 2007 and the Impala in 2006?

Yup. That was the version that added variable valve timing. Still lagged behind competing DOHC designs. Good torque and reasonable FE though. Documentation here:

Thank you.

What would be the best over all V6 3500 in your estimation, that was in the Malibu/Impala between 2004 and 2007 for performance, economy, durability, and is they a easy way to tell which it has??

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you just asked. The version from the 2006+ Impala and 2007 Malibu would be the best overall 3500 because it's the same engine with newer tech (VVT) built in.

However I'd be more interested in 3900 equipped models for the additional power at the cost of an MPG or two.

Thanks, you answered the question perfectly.

Also do these engines have fuel management systems? meaning shut down one bank of cylinders, when under light load.

The LZ8 3900 V6 has active fuel management, but it is only in the impala during certain years. The 3500 does not have the active fuel management system. From a technical point of view, both the 3500 and 3900 have issues with either coolant or oil leaking from the cylinder heads due to 2 corner head bolts having too small of a flange. Ends up needing new head bolts and head gaskets. I'm not saying it is an issue with every one of these engines, just something to watch out for. After they are fixed they are both great engines, it is just a design flaw.

Thanks for the heads up.

Is there a easy way to tell what engine is in a vehicle? you can see 3500/3600/3900 etc but what BHP for example............

The 8th digit of the VIN is the engine code. Take that number and use GM's VIN card decoder to tell you the RPO code of the engine.

Is this the same for Chevy vin #'s as well?

Yes, it is the same. These engines were used in many GM vehicles under the same VIN number.

The reason I asked is it is for Saab, and yes Saab was or is still part of GM.......:)
