I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu that I am replacing the transmission on. One of the steps was to disconnect the power steering pressure and return lines so that I can lower the sub frame. Now that the transmission has been replaced I am raising the sub frame back in to place and need to reconnect the power steering lines. My problem is, I don't know which line goes into which port of the power steering gear. I have held both of the lines up to both of the ports and it is not clear to me which goes where. My Haynes manual does not say and Google is not helping me either.

Of the two lines, one has a bend about one and a half inches from the connector. The other has a bend three inches from the connector.

On the power steering gear one port is close to the top where the steering fork attaches. The other is lower and pointed a little more towards the rear of the car.

I am not sure if this helps at all, but it is all I can find for a picture.

Well that helps some, but there are two holes in the back of the gear (5). Hose (3) goes into one hole, and hose (4) goes in the other. I just need to figure out which is which.

The picture at least shows top from bottom and will help distinguish how each line looks on the vehicle. The pressure hose is #4 and the return hose is #3. I looked some more, but that is about as detailed as it gets for the lines and their locations.

Thanks for the help. The diagram was very useful. It turns out the nuts, although they look identical, have a tiny difference that keeps one of them from going in the wrong hole. For future reference, the return line (3) goes in the top hole.
