In CA what are the laws regarding liscense plate illumination? I just put a blue light but I haven't been on the road yet.

By California law, it's illegal.

Most, if not all, states want a light that is white or white-ish to illuminate the plate at night, making it clearly visible at 50 feet. (Generalized for simplicity.)

You're allowed to place a clear cover over it but LEGALLY it's not supposed to change the color or interfere with visibility, including those fake ones that claim to thwart red light cameras.

Just do a white LED. That is what I had in the Malibu and have in the Speed3. Looks nice at night, and it a little brighter too. Ebay has them...

Yeah that's what I used, a white LED and it looks way better than stock. Cool white has a blueish hue.

Well I didn't do it on my Malibu, on my other car.

By virtue of the Federal Uniform Vehicle Code.....
Blue lights are prohibited anywhere on a vehicle and red lights must not be visible from the front and except for the license plate light, white lights must not be visible from the back, except when the vehicle is moving backwards, that is.

Well, there IS that also :D

OP asked about the CA laws, so I gave him my Google result of looking for the appropriate CA law. That was all.
