I always take them out even when I get gas.

If the key is in the ignition fully and the car is off, they cannot be locked in the car. If the car is on with then they can be locked in the car. Just good habit to keep them with you when you get out or open a window if you plan on leaving them in the car.

You can, but there is a specific method for it.

1. Obtain your keys from your key tray or wherever you store it at home
2. Open your door and walk an amount of paces equal to the distance from you to the car
3. Unlock your Malibu and open the door by pulling on the bridge like structure
4. Lift your right foot off the ground
5. You put your right foot in
6. Sit your hind quarters on the cushion and place your back against the vertical structure
7. You put your left foot in
8. Pull the door shut
9. Revel in your amazing car
10. Place your keys in the ignition slot (just think of a dirty joke, you'll know where to put it)
11. Realize you left your front door open
12. Facepalm
13. Open your door and go from steps 7 to 4 in reverse order
14. Lock your Malibu door by way of the door lock switch and close the door
15. Pull the handle to ensure the door locked (would not want anyone to steal your keys in the car!)..........
16. Facepalm again

And you are done! Congratulations!

If the key is in the ignition fully and the car is off, they cannot be locked in the car.

Only partly true. Using the "lock" button on the door, that's true; it won't let you lock it. Using the remote, however, it WILL lock the doors with the key in the ignition. It's an unlikely senerio to lock it with the remote and then leave both the key and remote inside the car.......but not impossible.

In my experience, only about half the incidents involve keys in the ignition.
The other half involve keys in the cup holder, on the seat, etc.......in which case the doors can be locked with the button OR the remote.

Onstar notwithstanding, I solve this problem by NOT having the remote attached to the key. The remote stays in my pocket all the time.
Unless I have screwed up and left it at home......or the battery is dead in the remote......then it IS impossible to lock yourself out.

My ex used to lock herself out of the house all the time. She'd turn the button on the knob and pull the door shut only to discover that her keys were inside. I told her that I preferred her to use the deadbolt instead. It's a safer lock against intruders, and it requires you to have the key in your hand (and the lock!) to lock it.

I do the same with my car. I don't lock it with the button - I use the remote. The last time I was locked out of my own car was when I had an aftermarket alarm. The emergency lights were on and when the door shut (after I got out to open a gate) it saw the brakes lights were on and the dome light was off so it locked the doors. It took a while to get back in but I succeeded. Lesson learned, too!

I locked my self out of my malibu twice.
First time:
Got out popped trunk locked doors
got my work stuff out of the trunk
accidently dropped keys in the trunk
closed it and tada locked keys in the car

Second time:
I put my daughter in the car
and I guess my keys fell out of my pocket
and I somehow hit lock
I closed her door to go to mine and
tada doors locked
Daughter, keys, and phone got locked in the car that time

Luckily OnStar unlocked the car in no time for both occasions

Sometimes I'll take the ignition key off my key ring then ill start the car
and lock it with the remote to let it warm up

That just proves that even careful people like yourself can lock 'em in the car. It's a pain when it happens but it's so nice there's help!

Great feature from Onstar. I carry a card from Onstar in my wallet! It has my Account # on the front of the card and has Onstar phone # on the back. 1888-466-7827 or just remember 1888-4- Onstar. Some don’t choose to get at least the Safe & Sound Plan but when unfortunate situations like this happens, it is all worth it, just like insurance!

I am always nervous about locking my keys in the car with my young daughter in the car! It has gone through my mind more than once!

She likes to be right there with me even when I am cleaning the Malibu and I always try to pay attention were my keys are, especially if my wife is at work / gone with the other set!

I could tell her to push the buttons on the remote or tell / instruct her how to unlock the doors but if she was in her car seat, none of that would help/work! Sometimes she can get herself out of the car seat but not always!

Depending on the weather and were you are at the time, that could be very scary for you and the child, especially if there was no phone at hand / nearby!

I have no Onstar so I carry a copy of the key in my wallet, plus, if you try to lock the doors with the lock button on the door and the door is open it will chime once and do nothing but if you hit it again it will lock the doors.

The chime is for after the doors are closed. When you push the lock button on the door once and it chimes, the doors will automatically lock after a certain time period after the doors are closed.

Two things to remember about the manual lock button.

1. Press it once while the doors are open. After shutting the last door it will lock after 5 seconds. The same holds true with the remote!

2. Using the lock button on the door will lock the doors but the anti-theft feature will not be enabled. Using the remote does. If you press lock once (from reomote) the anti-theft will be enabled after about 30 seconds. Pressing it a second time will enable it immediately. I have mine programmed to not sound the horn on the first press but to sound it on the second.

Mine is also set that way! It only sounds the horn after pushing the lock button on the remote twice! Never did anything to it, that is the way it came from the dealership!

Yeah my OnStar renewel hits right when I get my tax money back so it makes it a lot easier having to pay that yearly fee.

It's expensive but id rather pay for onstar than have to wait an hour for AAA to help me.

I locked my keys in the car once. Both sets happened to be in because I was just at the dealership and had given them the spare set.

Not only where both sets in, but the battery was as dead as could be, leaving very limited options. The only time I would have used that Onstar trial too...

Once we finally got in, no one had any jumper cables (even the mobile locksmith), so we used a few strands of speaker wire and wa-la! Everything is back to normal.

My old '89 Honda Accord had a feature that was so simple that it bordered on genius. The only way to lock the drivers door from the outside was with a key. Foolproof!

I believe they stole the idea from Volkswagen, the original Beetle had the same feature, so I've been told.
