: Engine install
sleeping.in.malibu 06-27-2011, 05:46 PM Idk if this should be here or gen disc. But anyway, the engine just got to the dealer today and they just started workig on it today as well. Im not necessarily talking about an install on an Malibu but how long does it USUALLY take to install, get together, etc

If there already was a thread about your problem, then the follow up should go THERE. ;)

Not the same problem
chevyguy8893 06-27-2011, 07:18 PM Moved it to general discussion since there is not a problem with the car in this discussion. Anyways, it really depends on how skilled the technician is working on your car. There is one tech at the dealer I work at who can do two day turn-around, or less, on smaller engines like the 4 cylinder in the malibu, and even some V6 engines in other GM cars. The only thing is he has been an engine and trans guy for 30+ years, and that was all he did. It still baffles me on how fast he is about it, but it is like nothing to him.
Most others in the shop take three to four days because they haven't done it on a regular basis. If I am thinking correctly the engine may have to be dropped out of the bottom of the car for the 3.6 V6 to make the job easier, but I am not sure. Getting it out and the new back in is the hardest part. It may also depend on how busy the shop is, but from the sound of the other thread it may be a top priority to get it done.

Yes it was dropped out of the bottom, and it's been like that for the fast month. From what the service writer has been telling me there's 2 people working on the car, the service manager and a gm tech so idk it would be huge if they had it back to me by today:)
EnvoyBu 06-28-2011, 01:53 PM Should have pleaded with the dealer to install the new LFX instead of the LY7. :)

How does it run?
CJOliver90 06-30-2011, 09:26 PM Can you please let me know what the engine was doing that you had it replaced. Because i am currently having a issue where when i start the car, it makes a tap sound, but goes away once it gets to normal operating temp.

that might just be the starter mine sound like paper in a fan when i started it but then idleing it made no noise and when i gave it gas it sounded like paper in a fan and on decelaration at about 3k it would make it again...i would turn ppls heads as i drove

That's a fairly common situation.
It probably is just a sticky valve lifter.
Have you had a mechanic listen to it yet ??

I took it in, but they werent able to hear it, because originally, it only happened when the engine was cold, and about 15 mins later when it reached opertating temp it would stop, and wouldnt happen all the time, But now it seems to be happening all the time and is doing it even when the engine is at operating temp. the service manager said its proably piston slap, and said its normal and they wont do anything about it. But a GM customer relations specialist called me, and said that they want it to go in to have the sound documented, and then they would go from there with options. GM has been good to me already, due to other issues they extended my certified preowned warranty from 32 to 48 thousand miles, so im hoping they wont dissappoint me this time either, will see this thursday.

Many places the "service manager" is not even a trained mechanic.......and this looks to be one of those places.
Piston slap can happen at the top of the stroke where it slaps the head.....or it can be lateral where it slaps the cylinder wall. EITHER situaion is a sign of really BAD wear on something. His claim that it is normal is total crap.
It might not be a lifter noise but I bet it isn't piston slap either. That's a pretty unusual condition and is often the last clue that something is wrong and not the first.
Good luck.
