Steering, Locks, and Dash lights

all in the last week, on my 2008 Malibu LS, 60,000 miles

My driver side door locks front and back will not work with the remote or with the button on the door. They act like they want to work but just don't have enough power.

My steering wheel starts turning left and right (kinda shimmy's) and the power steering goes out intermittenly. Quite scary. I noticed a service bulletin that may cover it but I am not getting the power steering signal and ding like is says it should.

Ocasionally the gages all go out, the needles works but all the lights go out and only for a minute or two. Then come back on. But you cannot see the numbers to see how fast you are going.

Is this stuff all connected? Or am I having some really bad luck!

Have an appointment for tommorw at the dealership.

JAL6981,

I have read your post about what you are experiencing with your 2008 Malibu. I apologize that I am not able to let you know if this all tied together since I am not a certified tech/mechanic. There are several members of this forum that are full of knowledge with these vehicles. I am hoping that they will be able to enlighten you before you take the car in for a diagnosis tomorrow.

I look forward to reading updates of the information that the dealership provides you with.

Weird question....But do you by chance have subwoofers in your car?

The door locks are most likely the actuators themselves. It is fairly common for them to fail over time from use. Like you said they just don't have enough power to move the lock and eventually stop working all together. Now, with the other issues you are listing it may be something else.

As for the other issues I am at a loss. I am curious to see what the dealer finds wrong there.

Those other issues sound like it's time to check for corrosion on the BCM pins. I've read other posts about that causing all sorts of havoc, and it's simple to fix by pulling the plug, putting some special grease on it (sparingly!), and reseating firmly. It's a cheap enough fix if it works, and time is all it really takes if it doesn't.

Ok, just heard from the dealer.

First no I do not have a subwoofer.

The dealer said that yes the door actuators need to be replaced.

The steering was the Electronic Steering motor that is causing the steering to go on and off intermittingly.

I thought that the Steering motor was covered under the service bulliten sb-10183. Which says that my car is covered but he said that it is only for a malibu classic in 2008. But thats not what the letter says. So I looked up the part number for the classic and its the same part number for the regular malibu. So Gm knows they have a bad part but are only willing to replace it in certain models. So I started to research. I found 65 other 2008 Malibu complaints about the same thing my car is doing. Then I also looked at the 2008 G6 with the same part but is covered and 57 complaints for the same thing. Why is the regular Malibu not included? This is going to cost me like $800 dollars and I feel like I am getting ripped off By Cheverolet.

Go to a different dealer. When I had scratched windows on my Grand Am they said the bulletin was for the coupe's only and wouldn't cover it. I went to a different dealer, and they replaced them with no problems.

I did not have time to let the vehicle go unfixed. My only option was to have it fixed or rent a car. I did not want to do that and then have to pay an expensive bill on top of that. Why would another dealer be different? I would of had to had the car towed to the other dealer also because I felt like it was unsafe to drive. I have called GM and they have given my issue to a claims specialist that will call me back in 24-48 hours but the CSR did not give me much hope stating that the cars vin was not inside of the range.

I have found out the part that was replaced was a new part by a new manufacturer than the old one with a new part number. The part that failed is the same one that is being replace on the vehicles with the right vin #. I think that they must not of included enough vin's in the range.

I will update when I hear from the claims specialist.

Thanks.
