Ok so today my USB acted up. It has nothing to do with cold weather. It was 50+ this morning. I started the car up at 730 am to go to the dealer for my first oil change. Worked fine. On the way home from the dealer, worked fine. Stopped at the gas station and when I got back in, it went straight to radio. Hit the aux button and just said connecting......... Unable to connect. Unplugged and plugged twice, started working. Nothing bad, a tad annoying.

Ok well after a few weeks of really frustrating phone calls to Chevrolet Customer Service and talking to my local Chevrolet dealer, I finally found out what causes any USB device plugged in the USB port to be dropped from the head unit. This issue can also happen to devices plugged into the AUX jack. From what the dealer told me, the cord cause the plastic connector (go figure GM) on the head unit became loose through driving and leaving the cord plugged in all the time. So long story short, the dealer will have to take the head unit apart and tighten the plastic peace so that it stop dropping the USB devices. I found out that a lot GM cars with similar style head units have had similar problems. So I hope they ditch that plastic piece and and reinforce it better this time around and issue the tech bulletin so that they can start fixing other driver's Malibu's and other GM cars.

I'm guessing that's just one of the issues, as I've had the USB connection issues since I got the car brand new. It's sporadic and happens most often when under 35 degrees for me. Why they put the USB way up there and not in a storage area is beyond me to begin with.

Not sure if that is the issue. I still had issues when my radio was 2 days old. It only occurred when I used the auto start.
However, if the above is a concern, I suggest getting an extra rubber USB cover and talking an exacto knife to it. Cut a rectangular hole big enough for the USB and it would act like a gasket keeping the plug firm in place. Just a thought.

It is a faulty plastic piece behind the face-plate of the head unit. It somehow got loose, worn, torn, ect and causes it to happen at random. The car (in my case) did not need to be auto-started to cause the issue. The temperature isn't the issue, because the IPOD is fully charged, and everything else works just fine. I have been out in -25 degrees (not windchill) and it has worked ok on some occasions, and bad on others. I have an appointment at the end of the month so I will know for sure what it is then.
If GM fails to figure it out, and fix it, then I will just go with the PAL (Personal Audio Link) that goes in the glove box. (Not sure why I didn't ask for it in the first place)

Tremain, its good to know that you've been able to narrow down the issue with your vehicle. Now if only GM could explain why so many of us are having issues only on a cold morning...
@tremain.roseman, I hope the appointment at the end of the month will get this resolved for you. Please, provide me with an update when you have a chance.
Honestly I think it's a mixture of the device being cold, and something in the head unit. I honestly won't know until they take it in and pull it apart. I will let you guys know though.

I've seen the 'USB device not recognized' issue in several makes & models though the same device will be consistently be recognized by a computer. I don't know what the explanation is.
