Default Re: Steering/front suspension noises/clunks thread.

I have been a frequent visitor of ChevyMalibuForum.com, but never needed to post because most of what I was looking for was in the forums already.

So here goes my first post:

I have been blessed with a 2011 Malibu LTZ (red jewel) and it has been a real upgrade from the 2006 Ford Focus I was driving prior! I received the Malibu in December of 2011. It was a rental vehicle prior to my ownership somewhere in Chicago. Picked it up with 19k Miles, for $21k total price. A super deal I thought... lowest in the 3 state area.

I am currently at 27K miles as of today. I have been trying (for the past few months) to figure out what the clunking noise was in my front end (driver's side). It is not as noticeable as some of you have described in this forum, which will make my job harder when I take it to the dealership for regular service. The best way I can describe the noise is when the driver side goes over a pothole/manhole cover/etc it makes this clunk noise. It gets worse when the road of course has more of the potholes and whatnot.

Here is where the hard part comes in.. I do not get the noise when I move my steering wheel back and forth (as seen in one of the videos on this thread). So what is the best way to describe this to service?

My next lovely noise is a loud popping/creak noise from the front passenger side when I reverse. I usually have to give the accelerator a little bit for the noise to manifest. It also occurs every time I back into my slightly elevated driveway. However, once the noise is made I cannot make it come up again. I must drive forward for some time before the noise will manifest while driving forward, and then it will happen again while backing. Hopefully this makes sense.

Other issues I will mention to my dealer... yay..:
-I think the seal on the windshield is failing... it sounds like air is entering the cabin when driving highway speeds, and I can really hear it when I enter the drying tunnel at the car wash.
-The lovely sticking noise where the window control panels meet the door - I can make this noise go away for a little while by pulling on the doors (driver and passenger front) but it comes right back.
-And now the engine (V6) is vibrating at idle. It is more noticeable with ac compressor on. While in (D)rive at idle, I can feel the vibrating in the steering wheel, and in the seat. While in (P)ark, if I place my hand on the cover for the engine, I can feel it vibrating almost like a V4. I am thinking spark plug issue..

Issues fixed over the past few months:
-Sunroof/headliner rattle over EVERY bump.. dealership replaced the sunroof shade with a more sturdier one - noise GONE
-Air Noise through sunroof as a result of this fix.. dealership realigned the sunroof after I took it back 2 times.
-Driver side rear passenger window failed and would not roll back up... dealership replaced the door actuator.
-Recirculate air button would not shut the vent door on the air intake (just below the windshield) so it would not pull air from the inside... dealership reset the door control and it started to work again.
-AC blowing hot air... temperature door failed and stuck open defaulting to heat only... again just a door control failure... dealership reset the door and it began to blow cold again (in the dead of summer).

Other than that, it is just regular maintenance stuff coming up.. oil change and maybe a tire rotation.

I am looking for the best way to describe the two front end noises to my dealership. I know the best way is to take them on a test drive, I am just afraid the clunking noise won't be loud enough for the service person to hear.

Thanks for any input, and sorry for such a long first post. I have wanted a Chevy for a very long time, but this Malibu has been in more times for more issues than my old 06 Focus was in. BUT I still love my Chevy!

Thanks,

T

I have a 2012 chevy Malibu that I have has since April 2012 and it's been to the shop 5 times because its makings a whining noise, like the power steering is going out or something is wrong with the steering. The first time my car went to the shop is because the controls on my steering wheel went out and that was a month and a half after I purchased it. Every other week it seems my car is at the shop, I've gone back and forth with the dealer and chevy and I'm not getting anywhere. The last time my car was in the shop was last week because of a busted radiator hose. The dealer did say that they heard the noise but they don't know where to even look to find it. They have put it on the machine to try to find a problem and haven't come up with anything. My case has been move to a district specialist and all he is saying is that he has to talk to the dealer, but I'm the one who is paying for a car that has so many problems with it. Now chevy is wanting me to keep a log after I've already recorded the noise that my car is making. I'm starting to feel that Im getting the run around because I'm a young woman, I've been polite and very courteous through the ordeal, I just want a vehicle that I feel comfortable driving seeing how I have to drive the highway everyday. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP

Keeping a log might be a really good idea. As it grows you may want to talk to a lawyer about the lemon laws in your state. Every once in a while a car rolls off the assembly line and just never works right. I hope that's not true in your case but it can happen. A couple owners/members have exercised that option and gotten out of their cars, and one recently (finally) bought a Toyota to replace his.

I'm not saying you need to run away from your car, but keep on top of it, like they say, and explore your options.

Let us know what happens, too, so we'll all benefit from your experience.

For the bump noise in the right front, Most likley is the Strut Mount. However after that is replaced(at the Chev dealer) noise is back in about 100 miles. Poor quality part from China. Also the hanger at the Catalitic converter, this is a known rattle. Also sounds like you may have a weak motor mount causing the vibration noise.
I have been a GM customer since 1947, Think this is my kast GM. Too much China low quality parts used in GM Vehicles.

@TylerJames. I apologize for the time delay in getting with you about your concerns with your vehicle. If you haven't gone to the dealership yet, I recommend requesting to take either the service manager or technician for a ride so you can show them what you're experiencing. Please, let me know how things are going and once again, accept my apologies for the time delay.

I think my 06 malibu LT may need a new INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. Can anyone let me know the latest parts number please? 20821325,20938080 or 25962603?
Is the A-1 CARDONE Part # 1C1005S also good?
Is there any extended warranty for 06 malibu LT to cover the shaft, rack, column? I received a letter from GM about steering assist giving out and had coil replaced. But about the clunk noise, the dealer told me that it's normal and no extended warranty to cover this.
Thanks.

@leshan, send me a private message with the VIN of your Malibu and I can research recalls and things of that nature.

Ok dropped my car off at the dealership tonight. Two issues P0013 on my check engine light and for the famed front end noise. 09 with 48k on it and I have the GMPP warranty. Had a tech ride with me and said it sounded like the strut. Then he began telling me about the problems with them and the complaints. Very interesting a tech and writer both admitted there are many complaints about this.

We will see what happens tomorrow and I will post back with my results.

Thank you michelle. I called my local dealer. I was told that only the steering motor has special 100k/10years extended warranty. The shaft has no coverage.
