Question OBD II linking error

Just bought an 09 and plugged in the OBD II and it keeps giving the linking error message. I am not sure if this is normal or what could be causing it. I know it can be fuses but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Is it possible the hand helds won't work on this? I wanted to check it before going for a sticker.
Didn't know if it could also be the chip in the key causing this. This car has more electronics than my last one.
Any help is appreciated!

You need CAN-compliant scanner. If yours is more than half a dozen years old, it probably doesn't understand the protocol.

Thanks. I saw there is an adapter for foriegn cars (new ones) to plug into the car and then you plug the OBD II into that but not for American cars.

As starship said though, even if you do convert the signal, to your scanner cable-wise; the scanner itself may not know how to interpret the data if it is older and not CAN era.

What model scanner are you using?? I have a Innova 3160 Engine/ABS and it works on my 08 which is OBDII.

I have an Actron scanner and I believe it is at least 6 years old.
