Is the "Service Engine Soon" light the same as the "Check Engine" light?
Just for curiosity, I checked my car with an OBDII scanner and it displayed trouble code P0650 Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) Control Circuit.
Why my "Service Engine Soon" light never lit up to tell me that there was a trouble code? And I know that my "Service Engine Light" bulb is not burnt out because when I turn the key to the ON position it shows the "Service Engine Soon" light lit up and when I START the engine it goes away.
So, does this mean that there's a Check Engine light around in my car's display besides my Service Engine Soon light? Remember my car is a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu LS V6 3.1L.
And what does this trouble code P0650 mean and how to fix it?
I know these are too many questions but if you guys could help with them it will be really helpful!
Re: Is the "Service Engine Soon" light the same as the "Check Engine" light?
There is a "service vehicle soon" and a check engine light (small engine that lights up orange, some say "check" underneath). Both of these come on with just the key on and go away after the car is running, but they cover separate systems. The code refers to a circuit problem for the malfunction indicator lamp (check engine light). The problem could be an open with between the PCM to the cluster, bad contacts or switch in the PCM, corrosion, short to ground or voltage, or (most likely) a burnt out bulb. As far as I know there is nothing that specifically says "service engine soon" on that model year cluster, but I could be wrong.

On page 2-53 of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu owner's manual is the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Check Engine Light). This light comes on to indicate that there is a problem and service is required.
On page 2-58 of the same owner's manual is the Service Engine Soon light which will come on briefly when you turn on the ignition. This light will stay on or come on and chime if it detects a problem on the vehicle, such as a DRL or an ALC malfunction. If this light stays on a trip to the dealership needs to be made as soon as possible.
If you do not have an owner's manual for your Malibu, you can visit www.helminc.com to obtain a replacement book.
