2006 Malibu making whining noise as I accelerate

From 20 miles per hour on up it sounds like a motorcycle is on my tail. The noise is coming from the front end. Does not seem to be the exhaust system at all. The car seems to run well the past few days but I am afraid something is wearing out. Some kind of gear or pump. Any ideas?
