Default Safety issue? "SVC TIRE MONITOR" alert

My 2008 Malibu is running well but a new alert that appeared this morning. Let's back up - 12/29 I bought 4 new tires and installation from Costco - yay me. I have been putting this off for 6+ months. 1/25 (today) driving to work in a second day of early morning rain, >ping< an alert appeared on my dash "SVC TIRE MONITOR". Not a traction alert which would be because of a slick road or pool of water, but an alert about tire pressure. Can it be I have run over a sharp object and I'm starting to get a flat? I am not in the mood to hand over $100 to my dealer just to turn off the alert. If Costco messed up a sensor, is 26 days the right delayed reaction time for an alert?!

Wrong section. [CMF edit: moved to correct section]

If you get out and look at your tire you can see if a tire is going flat. That's how we used to do it in the old days anyways.

What does your car usually do if the tire pressure is low? Maybe it is just telling you it is low.

Does the car show all of the pressures in the tires when you scroll through the menu? It would say something like low air pressure if the tire was going flat. The "SVC TIRE MONITOR" message indicates that there is a problem with the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), not with the tire itself.

The 2013 Malibu shows the air pressure values for each individual tire in the DIC but I'm not sure about the 2008. That's why he would probably get better info if this were in the proper section.

I had an 08 before. It does show the individual pressures for each tire. It has a screen for Fronts, L and R and Backs, L and R.

You get the same message if you put on a spare or if you put on new wheels and don't move over the TPMS value stems. Or if the tires were rotated and the system was never reset to relearn the position of the new tires.

10-4

Wouldn't the Alarm message have gone off immediately when driving away from Costco if they didn't set the TPMS up correctly though. The warning didn't appear until almost a month after the tires were installed.

I had mine rotated before and they forgot to relearn the sensors. The radio receiver still picks them up but it doesn't realize they've changed places so it shows the pressures correctly, just in the wrong arrangement.

"SVC TIRE MONITOR" means the TPM system has popped a code. Unfortunately you need a tech 2 to read it. Usually, this message is due to a bad sensor in one of the wheels. If the sensors don't report in for a period of 18 minutes this message pops up. Pretty tough to blame Costco but it's certainly worth a try. They are easily damaged when changing tires.

I mark my sensor's original location on the wheels & never bother updating the sensors. Call me lazy.
