Unhappy Check Gas Cap?

I got my 2005 new style Malibu LS from a dealer on Jul30 2010
since then I've had a issue with my cars DIC telling me to "check gas cap".
It comes on every time i start my car and sits there until i press the msg button.
My dad bought me a new gas cap that locks and it works fine so that's not at all the issue... Any ideas or help or experience with this issue?

It's detected a leak in the EVAP system which is intended to prevent vapors from the fuel tank getting vented to the atmosphere. Since the most common cause is a loose or missing gas cap, the DIC is programmed to display that message. Depending on where the leak is, it can get dangerous and thus it'd be best to get it fixed soon.

I have a new 2010 with only 600 and some miles. We had that same problem. Something around the where you fill for gas was not totally installed at the factory. They had to fix and also had to do a service update, so all is better now. I was getting a little worried.

In addition to what Starship said, these newer emissions systems use pressurized fuel systems instead of an open air vent type. So if there's a leak somewhere, like at the gasket of the gas cap, it'll detect the loss of pressure and notify you. What could be happening (not saying it is, but it's worth checking) is the gasket on the new cap isn't making a good enough seal. Or getting the cap could have been coincidental to the leak happening, but that's a bit of a stretch. Otherwise, if you start the car with the cap off, or fuel it while running, you might be getting the message for that reason.

If you have a 2.2L the gas cap is covered for 10 years 100,000 miles. A lot of locking gas caps are not compatable with GM cars so that could be your problem.

Is it the gas cap that's covered or the EVAP system? Also, I forget what year they went from vented to vacuum type cap on the Malibu. Maybe it is indeed a wrong gas cap. But, then, without the scanner readout, I'd be hesitant to recommend anything.

Thanks for the TSB. I'm not sure of the circumstances but I'd think this sort of problem should've been worked out with the selling dealer as soon as was noticed.

AH thank you for such great info! What exactly is the protocol for setting up service for this issue? I guess I'll call GMC right now haha. Thank you again, I hope a solution is found. xD
