Default 2005 Malibu Classic rolls over, but won't start

I have a 2005 Malibu Classic, 4-cyl. Several months ago, my car decided it didn't want to start for me. When I turned the key, the motor rolled over like it wanted to start, but it wouldn't fire. The first time it did it, I just left it in the parking lot for almost two days, tried it again and it started just fine. About a week later, it did the same thing. That time, the only mechanic within an hour of where I live came to get it for me. He kept it for four months only to tell me he found a bare injector wire that was grounding to the motor and he 'fixed' it. When I got the car back, I was pretty leary since I've never used him before - so I traced the injector wires and nothing. I think he just let it sit up long enough it reset itself again like it did in the parking lot the time before. I got in my car this morning and it started doing the same thing again. I really don't want to have to tow the car an hour to get to a reputable mechanic, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Fuel is getting to the motor. I checked by pressing the pressure relief valve, priming the engine, and pressing again. When I try to start the car, it rolls over just fine - and the battery doesn't sound weak at all. I've replaced the spark plugs & wires, fuel filter, and the oil & filter. Still no luck.

I'll repeat with more detail what I said in another forum, and which has been backed up by several mechanics in town.

Last time my 2000 Malibu pulled this act, I had pressure at the fuel rail. I had about 25 to 30 PSI of pressure. Injectors won't spray properly until something like 40 PSI ...

Get a fuel pressure gauge, and when it's acting up, see what pressure you REALLY have.

I ended up with a $600 fuel pump replacement because I didn't want to buy a $30 gauge. Not that I'd have replaced the fuel pump myself - I don't have a lift and really, REALLY don't want to have to lift and drop the fuel tank while on jack stands. But it's definately something to check.

LS fogs added with custom wiring. HID high beams, HIR low and halogen fogs. Raybestos Pro Grade front rotors and Bendix D747 ceramic pads on front.

Addendum: Rest in peace. Surge tank blew, motor overheated, I think she's lived a long and useful life.

I have a 2005 MAXX with the same issue. It first started with the gas tank near low, and also well driving at a high rate of speed (highway). My car would chug then stall well in gear.
I would also have the problem posted before by jthomasson.
My car will turn over but just wont fire. My pressure in the fuel lines are at 55psi well primed. After letting the car sit for 20 mins and checking again the pressure had already dropped to 30psi. I believe the pressure should stay up for a fair bit, but my is dropping.
I got to quotes for pumps 690 and 580
I am a student can barely even afford my gas!

Does anyone know
A) If my fuel pressure is to stay up even long after turning the pump on
B) what could be another reason why we are not able to get the car to fire
(leak/kink in fuel line? filter ? pump? spiders? WHATTTTTT)

There are 3 sides to every fire triangle: fuel, air, spark.

If you believe you're getting the correct amount of air and you're fairly certain you're getting a hot enough spark, then fuel is the last piece of the puzzle.

The injectors need a certain amount of pressure to work well. If the pressure drops with the key off that's no real concern. Once you turn it on it primes the whole fuel system with pressure. Next you need to know if you've got enough flow. Without it it can't fill the void left after injecting the fuel.

The first place to look is the filter. Was it ever replaced that you know of? If not, it's not an expensive thing to do, but take the proper precautions and bleed the pressure off the system before disconnecting the filter! Also have a pail or something to catch the drips beneath the car. If it spills on blacktop it'll eat it alive.

Either that or you have a gnome...

I know that this is a very old thread, but I had experienced this same problem yesterday and wanted to let anyone else that may have a problem like this what my fix was. The Anti-Thief system had the fuel system locked and the car would not start……The owner’s manual said to turn the ignition key to the on position leave it on for 10 minutes, then turn it off for 5 seconds and then it started right up for me !!!!! I hope this is helpful for someone else in the future…..MMeek
