Default Remote Start Repair

Hey guys,

I have an '04 Maxx with the remote start option. This function worked fine for a long time just fine. About a year and a half ago, the key fob was dropped and started acting up. Now when i try to do the remote start, the lights flash but it never starts. Is it a key fob problem or a car problem? The car is receiving some form of signal from the fob, otherwise the lights wouldn't light up, but it doesn't start. I've heard that the hood position sensor can sometimes cause this problem, too. Any incite?

Also, where can I get a replacement key fob? I want an OEM style fob with all the options that my car has (remote start, lock, unlock, alarm, trunk). Any ideas?

On the back of the fob is a GM part number, probably 8 digits long, google that, or try eBay. The hood switch is a good possibility, the fob sounds like it's doing it's part. Would have to look in scan data to see remote start disable history for an accurate diagnosis.

well, I just ordered two new remotes for the car, so i can have a spare just in case, from eBay for 40 and my local dealer will program the remotes for $60. So $100 for two new fobs aint bad, and if the remote start still doesn't work, I can trace it down from there.

Thanks for the quick reply

Are you sure the car never cranks and just doesn't stay running? Sounds to me like the engine might be having a long crank issue and the time limit for a remote start crank is exceeded prior to the engine actually running.

Easy to do, clean the throttle body. Use brake clean or carb cleaner and a rag. Do not spray into the throttle body but onto the rag instead. Engine not running take off the air intake hose to the throttle body and holding the throttle open, clean the throttle plate, edge of the plate that actually rests against the bore and the bore itself. Won't seem like much but it doesn't take much carbon buildup to block airflow enough to cause either low idle or stalling or sometimes an extended crank.

Another possibility is there was a PCM update for extended crank on hot restarts back in your cars timeframe. Lots of cars were never updated, I did 2 this week. This is something you would notice though on regular starting as well. Worth a shot if you're so inclined.

HIS problem may not be identical to yours.

P.S. Your posts would be easier to read with a little punctuation or white space thrown in along the way.

My remote start quit also; traced it down to a faulty hood ajar switch which is NOT sold separately from hood latch. I installed a jumper in the 3-pin connector between the black and purple wires.

Jested Sniper,

I would venture to guess your problem is a defective hood ajar switch. Since the lights flash when you try to do a remote start fob is OK. For the remote start to work: key cannot be in the ignition, hazard lights have to be off, hood has to be closed, car cannot be moving, and the malfunction MIL light has to be off.

You can test the hood ajar switch with an ohmmeter. Getting to the 3-prong connector from the switch requires removal of the flat plastic panel between the radiator and grill; GM calls this the "upper fascia support". Test that the Purple and Black wires are shorted with the hood closed—I'll bet they are not. The hood ajar switch is an integral part of the hood latch making it a rather expensive part and a PITA to replace—alignment issues and cable retainer issues.

You can fix this free and your remote start will work with even the hood open. Get a short piece of wire (about 3/4") the approximate size/diameter of the male pins in the 3-prong connector. Fashion the wire into the shape of a "U". Insert the wire ends into the Female plug, shorting the Purple and Black wires. Tape up the male and female connector ends (don't plug them back together) to keep dirt out.

If you ever get real ambitious and have the funds you can replace the hood latch, removing the little "U" wire jumper.

I just checked the schematics for Gen7 (2008-2012) and the colors referred to above are the same.

Pin out:
A - Pnk/Blk - Ajar
B - Ppl - Closed
C - Blk - Ground (near WS wiper fluid reservoir)

Switch operation:
* When closed, C shorts to B to send BCM signal that it is closed
* When open/ajar, C shorts to A to send BCM signal that it is not closed
