Default Change transmission fluid?

2009 LTZ 3.6L.

Owners manual says to change fluid at 50K, if severe use (except 6 speed). Now have 48K, and just getting ready.

How do you know if you have 6 speed trans? If so does it mean no change is necessary?

If not a six speed, then what?

Is there a dipstick on either type of transmission? (can't find one)

Thanks

Determining trans type:
  • 6-speed has P R N D M, and shift request button/paddles ('08 & '09 have paddles, '10-'12 have button on shifter).
  • 4-speed has P R N D I L.

Dipstick:
  • 6-speed has dipstick if you have a V6, sight plug and fill plug if you have the I4.
  • Not sure about the 4-speed.

This is close to what should be in the owners manual.

(h) Change automatic transmission fluid and filter (except 6-speed) if the vehicle is mainly driven under one or more of these conditions:

- In heavy city traffic where the outside temperature regularly reaches 90F (32C) or higher.

- In hilly or mountainous terrain.

- When doing frequent trailer towing.

- Uses such as found in taxi, police, or delivery service.

The except 6 speed means the filter, as it is not serviceable like the 4 speed filter is. The fluid would still be changed. Look for the dipstick just rearward of the radiator, has a black knob on it with some writing I think. Check the fluid level after a good long ride or you'll get the level wrong. Very sensitive to temperature of fluid for correct reading of level on dipstick.

Thanks, I have the V6. Do you know where the dipstick is? The cover on top of the engine hides everything!

Follow the air intake tube from the throttle body back to where it changes from a rigid plastic tube to the flex hose, right at that transition point look straight down and you'll see the top of the dipstick. It's a good 6 inches below the air intake tube. Black plastic a little bigger than a silver dollar with white writing on it. It goes into the black plastic side cover. Be sure to check the fluid after a long drive, a good 15 miles or so. The fluid temp has to be between 180 and 200 degrees and without a scan tool you don't actually know what the temp is and checking too early with the temp too low will give a false low reading.
