Unhappy Transmission Problem, not shifting correctly

Hi, I'm new to this Forum and Malibu ownership as well. I just picked up a 2008 Malibu 2lt Yesterday, love the car, today the speedometer dropped out on me, then it was stuck in first gear, i was only a few km from home and on a back road, (no traffic to worry about), drove for a few minutes and then the speedometer started jumping all over the place and the trans started shifting very harsh and erratic, scanned it and it had a code for the vehicle speed sensor, took it out and it was chewed badly and had chunks of metal that are not from the sensor stuck in it. Wondering if this happened to someone else and what caused it, car still has powertrain on it any my dealership is usually very good. More concerned as to how this happened so I can make sure it doesnt happen again
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

Unfortunately, that sounds like a trans that's going to need to come apart, good you're in powertrain warranty yet. I wouldn't drive that too far until you get it fixed. Really should be towed to the dealer now already. That metal is going many other places other than what you see on the speed sensor.

I don't know if the warranty is different in Canada (it probably is) but in the states you can call GM Roadside Assistance & they will arrange to tow it back to the dealer at no charge to you. Unless I got a really good price on that vehicle I'd probably just get my check back.

Welcome aboard Guppie08MalibuLT! As the others have said, be sure to have roadside assistance come and get the car. Your still under warranty, so that's even better for you! Once again, welcome aboard!

Do you have a 6spd or 4spd?

Thanks for the comments. I has roadside come pick up the car, the trans was disassembled and what had happened was a spacer in the final drive pinion gear came apart and took out the speed sensor. Was talking to the tech working on my car, he said if it didn't take out the sensor I would have had no idea that it happened and eventually that gear would have detonated and taken out the transmission. I am an apprentice at the dealer but have no experience with auto transmissions. Going back together with new parts, hopefully be driving it Tuesday. And it is a 4 speed

That's good news. It's a good thing it didn't totally blow up on you!
