Do I Really Need Premium Gas?
May 21, 2015 - 6:45 AM - by AutoGuide.com

Quote:
Cost is often the first thing that comes to mind when motorists think of gasoline. Many will drive halfway across town to save a couple cents per gallon. Additionally, purchasing regular-grade fuel to save money can be an exercise in false economy, especially if your vehicle is designed for premium gas.

Running fuel with insufficient octane can cause internal engine damage, which isn’t pretty. “The worst case scenario …. You could actually [melt] holes in the pistons and cause catastrophic damage to the [connecting] rods,” said Bill Studzinski, GM powertrain fuels group manager. Fortunately a disaster of this caliber is unlikely in today’s highly tuned, computer-controlled powerplants. Still he said, “You should follow the owner’s manual guidance.”

What’s more apt to happen when there isn’t enough octane is a phenomenon called spark knock. John Juriga, director of powertrain at the Hyundai America Technical Center described this abnormal combustion as “sort of a high-pitched pinging,” or perhaps even a rattling noise. This sound is caused by colliding flame fronts inside the combustion chamber, which lead to pressure spikes and ultimately that telltale sound. “Obviously knocking is not something customers like to hear,” he said, nor is it good for your engine.

Octane Requirements

Octane is a measure of gasoline’s resistance to igniting under pressure. To improve fuel economy and output figures, manufacturers often increase the compression ratios of their engines, that is, how tightly they squeeze an incoming air-fuel mixture. A lower-octane fuel is more likely to spontaneously ignite than one with a higher rating. For these reasons and more, performance vehicles or ones equipped with forced induction often demand premium.

Studzinski said GM has two different fuel requirements. In some of their cars and trucks high-octane gasoline is recommended, in others it’s mandatory. Of course many of their vehicles are designed to happily burn

2016 Camaro Revealed
May 16, 2015 - 3:04 PM - by AutoGuide.com

Quote:
The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro just debuted in Detroit during a special event at Belle Isle.

This is an all-new Camaro that heralds the nameplate’s sixth generation. It’s a new car from the ground-up based on the same Alpha platform as the Cadillac ATS and CTS built at GM’s Lansing assembly plant. By basing the new muscle car on that platform, it sheds up to 200 lbs and is significantly stiffer than the outgoing model.

Production of the current Camaro in Oshawa, Canada, will end later this year, likely in November. The new model boasts a long list of mechanical enhancements that will make it a significantly more capable product.

Like the Mustang, the new Camaro will be available with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Unlike that car, the boosted four-banger is going to serve as the base powertrain, followed by the V6 as a mid-range option capped off with the V8-powered SS.

The four-cylinder model makes 275 HP and 295 lb-ft of torque while the mid-range V6 offers 335 HP, 284 lb-ft. Of course that leaves one engine: the new 6.2-liter V8 that is a close relative to the motor powering the C7 Corvette. And power? It makes 455 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque.

All variants of the new Camaro will be available with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic. Like the new Corvette, the manual offers automatic rev matching downshifts.

Both the V6 and V8 models come standard with a variable exhaust that has a hushed “stealth” mode accessible via the snow and ice drive mode. When courtesy doesn’t matter as much, there’s also a setting that bypasses the mufflers entirely to increase engine performance.

On top of that, the car will also offer a variety of drive modes. All versions of them will come with a snow and ice mode, a normal mode and a sport mode, but the SS will also offer a “track” setting.

SS models also come standard with Brembo brakes and the same magnetic ride suspension that gives the

10 Car Noises to be Concerned About
May 07, 2015 - 7:18 AM - by AutoGuide.com

Quote:
With a twist of the key or poke of its start button your vehicle’s engine should fire up with the urgency of a physician responding to a code blue.

Of course it should also idle as smoothly as a sewing machine running a line of chain stitches. If this isn’t the case you ought to take note because something serious could be awry.

The same is true for the rest of your car or truck. It should operate as silently as a napping kitten and feel smoother than satin underwear. Modern vehicles are engineering marvels built to exacting standards, but as with anything crafted by man, things will go wrong and often in spectacular fashion. If for some reason your car is making uncouth noises here’s a small sample of what could be going on.

1. Hissing

Sure, there might be a bundle of rattle snakes living under the hood but if your car or truck’s engine makes a hissing sound it could also be an indication of a leak, either in the cooling system or a vacuum line. If it’s the former overheating is a concern, the latter, drivability and fuel-economy issues could result. A trip to the mechanic is in order.

2. Clunking

If your vehicle clunks while driving over bumps or pot holes something is definitely out of order. Chances are it’s not a case of roadway elves knocking on the undercarriage, even if these diminutive humanoids are sworn to protect the highways and thoroughfares of America. Moving on …

Bad ball joints, worn control-arm bushings or faulty stabilizer link-pins can cause uncivilized sounds, but other chassis components could be to blame as well. Even a loose exhaust system can flop round and make percussive noises.

3. Porcine Squealing
If your car’s engine is making a shrieking sound it could be an issue with the serpentine belt. Either the rubber has gotten old and brittle or the tensioner could be failing. If the latter is to blame the belt may not have the appropriate pressure applied to it,

Why Won’t My Car Start?
May 05, 2015 - 11:09 AM - by AutoGuide.com

Quote:
Without a doubt, every owner dreads the moment when their car won’t start. What should you do? Who should you call? Can you fix it yourself? Here’s a list with ten common reasons why cars don’t start up and what you can do about it.

'The first step is to define the no start' said Joe Spadafora, certified instructor at Universal Technical Institute’s Exton, Pennsylvania campus. Spadafora spent the majority of his career in working in the service department of several dealerships and receiving factory training from GM. He’s certified as a Master Technician and certified by Chrysler as a Dodge Viper technician . He also holds certifications from Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Lexus and Scion as well, so if there’s something wrong with your car, chances are he’s seen it before.

To diagnose the reason your car isn’t starting, you need to pay attention to happening when you turn the key. 'Does the engine crank but not actually start or, when you turn the key, does literally nothing happen?' he said. 'In a customer’s eyes, the following two options are the same because both create a scenario that results in the vehicle’s failure to run.'

While the two situations might seem similar, they have very different meanings that are important to a mechanic and can signal different problems calling for a variety of solutions.

'It’s important to note that a vehicle is an extremely complicated machine and can exhibit similar symptoms for a variety of reasons,' he said. 'That is why it’s important to first look at the type of ‘no start’ and then at the list of conditions that could be causing it in the first place.'

GM
April 1, 2015

DETROIT – Chevrolet today introduced the all-new 2016 Malibu – a completely restyled midsize sedan engineered to offer more efficiency, connectivity and advanced safety features than ever.

An all-new hybrid powertrain, which leverages technology from the Chevrolet Volt, will help offer a GM-estimated 48 mpg city, 45 mpg highway – and 47 mpg combined, unsurpassed in the segment. The Malibu’s standard 1.5L turbo powertrain is projected to offer 37 mpg highway.

The 2016 Malibu is also longer and lighter, with more interior space and improved fuel efficiency. Its wheelbase has been stretched close to four inches (101 mm), and it is nearly 300 pounds (136 kg) lighter than the current model.

“Midsize customers tell us they want great fuel economy, connected technologies, wrapped in a gorgeous exterior. This is exactly what the 2016 Malibu was engineered to do,” said Jesse Ortega, Malibu chief engineer.

The 2016 Malibu goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2015. Additional vehicle highlights:
  • Available segment-exclusive OnStar 4G LTE in-vehicle connectivity as well as available wireless phone charging
  • Agile, sophisticated and sleek exterior design incorporates sophisticated details that advance Chevrolet’s signature cues
  • Standard preventive safety technologies include 10 standard air bags, with available features such as Forward Collision Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
  • Automatic Parking Assist is also available
  • All-new Teen Driver feature, which allows parents to view their kids’ driving statistics, such as maximum speed, warning alerts and more
  • All-new, power-dense Ecotec 1.5L turbo engine with fuel-saving stop/start technology is standard, offering a GM-estimated 160 hp (119 kW)
  • High-output 2.0L turbo with GM-estimated 250 hp (186 kW) is available and is mated with a new eight-speed automatic transmission.
