2000 malibu 3.1l very noisy engine

I need some advice on how to proceed with this vehicle. I believe the engine is not repairable economically and with all the problems associated with the 3.1l I would rather swap the motor. I was thinking about putting in a 4-cyl or maybe a 3800 if its possible. What would you guys recommend? Also the transmission slips in and out of over-drive. I know it's an old 2000 but I would like to get it running nice before selling it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would just scrap it myself..... you want to swap a motor into it? Then sell it. You would be lucky to get 1000 for it in running condition....heck my 2006 i was offered all the way from 1000 down to 200 bucks for it when I was trying to sell it...figured screw it keep it ...drive it untill she drops

I think your right. Its not worth fixing. Im going to keep it around for a back up vehicle and other then routine maintenance I won't put alot of money into it. Thanks for the reply and advice.

No problem.....

No long trips, keep oil in it....might last a bit for an around town transport if you keep your foot out of it

Cheers

If anything, your only feasible engine swap is another 3100. Another engine would require too much compatibility work, and that's big money out of your pocket you'll never get back.

I agree with the general idea that you should either drive it till it dies or trade it/sell it immediately.
