Question Engine swapping: 3100 to 3400?

I've seen here and on some similar sites people talking about swapping the 3100 engine for the 3400. How easy or difficult is this?

I'm aware that the 3400 is basically a bored-out 3100. I would guess that physically, the 3400 should fit perfectly in the same space as the 3100; i.e., that it would just bolt in to the same mounting points without any need for custom fab work, etc...is this correct?

Now what about electronics and other accessories. Aside from the block itself, will I also need to replace the computer, wiring harnesses, any of the belt-driven accessories, any lines or hoses, etc.?

Finally...According to my research (correct me if I'm wrong), the 3400 came in a few different power configurations depending on which vehicle it was in. The Grand Am GT version made 175 hp @ 5200 rpm and 205 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. The Impala/Monte Carlo version made 180 hp @ 4700 rpm and 205 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm. The minivan version made 185 hp @ 5200 rpm and 210 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm. What specifically was responsible for these differences? Should I try to get a 3400 from a minivan or can one of the others be easily reconfigured for the minivans' power levels?

The motor swap itself is easy, should physically drop right in. As long as you're in a non emission area, easiest way to do it would be to get the whole engine, ECM and engine wiring harness from a donor vehicle. That way if the pin configuraton of the ECM is a little different it shouldn't be as much of a PITA to work around. The actual power output and rated output may be two different things. The two are not always as close as you would think for whatever reason. If there were slight differences, I honestly don't know what they would be. 10 years ago I thought there were actually kits available for some swaps like you want to do. Whether they included the N body, I don't recall.

Grab the ECM out of a matching car in the boneyard to your car, or to the donor car.

There's folks that can fix the VIN and reprogram for the 3400 over the 3100.

Actually, you CAN run the 3400 with the 3100 ECU, but there won't be much improvement if any due to it running like a funny 3100.

RwP

335K miles on original motor and tranny (only motor work 2 x LIM replacement), Monroe SensaTrac struts front and back (new at approx. 300K miles), and Alero discs in back. LS fogs added with custom wiring. HID high beams, HIR low and halogen fogs. Raybestos Pro Grade front rotors and Bendix D747 ceramic pads on front.

Addendum: Rest in peace. Surge tank blew, motor overheated, I think she's lived a long and useful life.

This would depend on how easy/possible if is to put a 3800 in a Malibu.

Logically, since both the 3100 and 3800 were available in the same car (6th-gen Grand Prix), one might assume that 3800 can fit wherever the 3100 can fit. Whether this is actually true for the Malibu or not, I have no idea. Do you, or does anyone else know if this is doable? Again, I'm looking for essentially a "drop-in" swap. Custom exhaust or intake work might be OK but I'm not looking to modify the chassis or frame at all.

Re: Engine swapping: 3100 to 3400?

I was actually looking into this same stuff several years ago. I'm 90% sure from what I recall that there is modification. Very minimal though. Like maybe relocation of something or whatnot.

GM 3100 V6, CAI router to drivers side wheel well with S&B filter, Tenzo T-R exhaust, Bosch spark plug wires, NGK spark plugs, Mobil 1 synthetic oil, front and rear strut braces, 54mm TB, Falken high performance tires (forgot specs), green coolant swap.

Aftermarket audio deck, approx 350W Polk Audio amp and 10" 500W Polk Audio sub (forgot specifics).

Re: Engine swapping: 3100 to 3400?

I have a 2000 impala (3.4 v6) that I had blown a head gasket and then it broke a rod inside the engine (it didnt go thru the block as i could still drive it up on to the car trailer). I have an older car (1995 oldsmobile cutlass ciera 3.1 v6) that i dont use because it has a some minor issues that I really dont want to dump any money into to fixing them (i.e: needs new window motors on all 4 doors, new fuel pump, speakers, headliner, new tires all the way around, etc).. My question here is this... can i swap the motors? If so, do i need to swap the computer also, or can i just have the one in the Impala reprogrammed?
